There's an indictment of nerd culture in here somewhere.
I don't know. I think movies like this and Detective Pikachu, while being "meant for kids", are still clearly banking on the people that grew up with those series coming out to see them. Same with something like Power Rangers. I'd wager at least half the people that play the games are adults that grew up with the series, Pokemon especially. Sonic maybe not so much, but that's just because most new Sonic games are terrible.
Well then I would say that any adults who are going to see this should not temper their expectations because Sonic's teeth are too human, or his body too weird, or his arms too blue (oh the irony in this statement).
No, you should all be anxious because Jim Carrey's in it. That man has been cinematic poison for decades now.

I’m not entirely clear what you’re getting at. But it strikes me that Super Nintendo games were definitely 99.9% made for children, and you have, as an adult with adult perspective and near-total disregard for the original target audience and time/technology frame, given the bottom 300 games extensive and well-stated constructive or destructive criticism, to the delight of myself and many others.
The version presented thus thus far sucks and doesn’t appeal to anyone. None of today’s children would remember it fondly and Sonic is not a character who can presently generate youth excitement (imo). So when adults also hate it what’s left? The studio is right to rework it.
Hmm, I wasn't really trying to say that criticism isn't allowed. I'm saying that fans were able to successfully get the studio to actually change the movie, which seems over the top. Would Disney change Toy Story 4 over trailer criticism?
And that truly the most alarming part of this Sonic trailer is Jim Carrey.
The blue arms were in reference to Chris Chan. I'm not gonna link anything because it would probably be NSFW, but you can google it if curious.
"Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen."
The movie will release with some minor change that has verrrrry little to do with the actual complaints.

I mean, they could do a complete overhaul and redo every scene with a different model. They don't need to reshoot for that so it is feasible I think. I feel bad for the people working on it though...

Why feel bad? Clearly they were inept to design a Sonic that looked like Sonic. Movie is gonna be pure shit no matter how much they change it at this point.

Honestly the movie looks ok. Jim Carrey may well... Carry it. I wasn't actually too too bothered by the design of Sonic. Honestly the screenshots are cherry picking bad moments, in motion it doesn't look too bad. I can see what they were going for; they wanted a Sonic that could teeeeechnically exist, if in some alien form.
The classic sonic design has some technical issues that are hard to explain away when you put him beside real characters (humans). The whole one giant white eye thing, for instance. He HAD to look different from classic Sonic.
I'd not say I'm defending the design necessarily, just saying I can see how they got there.

Space jam had the advantage of the opposite world effect. Michael Jordan was the odd one out - he was taken to the Toon world. Further, none of the characters were especially out there in their designs. All based on actual animals and sticking roughly to human/animal hybrid features.
Sonic is incredibly stylized, and to my knowledge he's the only such character in this film. He's already going to stick out like a sore thumb, and I feel like they wanted it to be like he at least ALMOST looks like he COULD exist in this world. I get the feeling they didn't want to make a cartoon.

How are the screenshots cherrying picking bad moments? Bad design is bad design, no matter how you try to church it up.
Is that what they wanted with Sonic? If they wanted realism, they'd revisit some of the physics.
What issues does the classic design have that can't be explained? How is that any different from Roger Rabbit putting his head through a fridge and the director taking the floating bird over his head and throwing it on the ground? You don't have to explain certain things that are just inferred by the content itself. If you have to explain the content of something that's already been well established for the last 30 years, IMO, you're doing it wrong.
"Why does Sonic have human teeth?"
"Why does Sonic have fur?"
"Why does Sonic look disproportionate to his normal self?"

Honestly at the end of it all I feel like someone saw Rocket Raccoon and said "We should do that but with Sonic!" and then it probably went through multiple iterations of "How realistic can we make Sonic look while still having him be recognizable?". They just went too far toward the "realism" side of the sliding bar in character creation. I imagine they say they'll update his look because they already HAVE multiple iterations of him that have been tested internally.

It's interesting to see how many folks "know" what these studios do though and what assets they already have *shrug*

I think it is a fair assumption that they have at least 3 or 4 other prototype designs.
But I highly doubt they have another fully-fleshed-out design ready to go.
It is probably another 3 - 6 months of post production if the changes are anything beyond just getting rid of the awful human mouth.
I agree with ya. Others are just making it sound like they have all these assets and it's gonna be a quick and easy thing. I'm sure they have a few prototype designs, but they'll probably need to still modify a fair amount of whatever model they use as the new baseline.
If they only got rid of the mouth, I don't think that's going to really fix the criticism.

I could imagine that the change is "straightforward" in that they are likely able to come up with a design that fits within the same "box" so that hands, feet, and head all end up in the same place in every scene, more-or-less. (i.e. like a "reskin" of a video game character)
BUT for movie-grade CGI elements, you are still talking about rendering things at likely hours-per-frame (especially when fur is involved).
So once they come up with their master model for the reskin, they still have to go back and re-render everything and THEN they have to go back and retouch every frame, potentially, to make sure it all looks right.
It's a shitload of work, for sure.
And I was just mentioning the mouth as the low-hanging fruit -- the whole character design defies reason as to how anyone ever gave it a green light to spend the development money on it.
All that said -- depending on when this was slated for release, there is definitely a fair chance that the trailer shows ALL of the scenes where Sonic is fully rendered, and they haven't actually other done the other work yet -- that is, it may not be a true rework of anything beyond what we've already seen.
This kind of post-production CGI work goes on all the way up to the release day.
Can some one please make this look like sonic the hedgehog? Because this might as well be what he looks like in that trailer. I know they’re fixing it but...
Maybe they'll go with this now that the director has confirmed that they're changing sonic.
Personally thought he looked overly humanlike. I suppose others did, too. I assumed that's what they were going for, trying to make Sonic mroe relatable to kids...? That seemd to get shot down pretty hard.
Anyways... pretty wild that a movie studo would change the title character of a movie after the trailer's been released....?? Like, that's pretty intense. Trailer, posters, a whole lot...
I have no idea how much of the film would have been completed by now (for a november 8th release)... but doesn't the DESIGN alone of the character take longer than that?

The last time the internet had a major lashback like this, the movie ranked faster than anything else. I don't get why people are so surprised that a studio who wants to make money isn't willing to risk that kind of bombing at the box office.

What movie? Just curious? Snakes on a Plane?
In this case, the fact that "fans" were outraged enough to cause the filmmakers to CHANGE the main character is most likely going to help the movie, and already has, in incredible ways.
The amount of publicity this has caused is probably incalculable... and now that fans will get "what they want", they will likely makre more money at the box office because people will go to see the "new" Sonic that they "helped create".
I've already seen tweets indicating people think it's all (Having Sonic look shitty, see outrage, then a "redesign") just a marketing ploy to make that very thing happen.
I wish this outrage was herre for TMNT It makes me sad it wasn't. Also, where's the outrage for Casey Jones being rebooted as a freakin' police officer!?!?! Uhhh, really??? You take a vigilante crime fighter and turn him into a police officer?

Sorry, perhaps there was a misunderstanding. I was a bit confused I guess, haha . When I asked "what movie?" I guess I was referring to what movie that's been changed BECAUSE of the backlash.
I've re read your comments and you're right. I get what you're saying now. Certainly a little controversy isn't a bad thing.
Aside from the controversy has there ever been a studio to actually change something because of it??? Interesting to see what will happen with Sonic. I'm going to re-watch the trailer now.
Okay, so... Sonic looks more human like. Not sure what the big deal is.

That. That's what the big deal is. lol It's just hitting that uncanny valley for most people, while others it feels like a slap in the face because the overall design isn't staying true or respecting it's original cartoony look, much like how the new Pokemon movie is doing.
Maybe it's both, it's all subjective at the end of the day, but to me it looks more like an interpretation of what Sonic looks like by someone who's never played or heard of Sonic before.

Yeah - all the actors who were accused of rape and/or other sexual allegations that had already been handled years prior, or because of something someone said on twitter for shock value 12 years ago, or someone made a mistake with their twitter/postings, etc. (I'm not talking about those who have been found guilty and/or are currently serving time for their actions)
A few examples:
- Danny Masterson on The Ranch was let go because of a rape allegation (or several, maybe?) that had been handled years prior (and found not guilty I believe?)
- Roseanne with her racist tweet got her fired from her comeback show
- Netflix removed user ratings because they don't want something they've invested a ton of money in to look like failures (things like Amy Schumer and Adam Sandler movies were getting horrible reviews and ratings, so they ended up axing that feature)
And so on. It's all because of the social media climate these days, IMO, where everyone thinks they have a voice that needs to be heard, or a to follow the herd mentality, or thinks they need to be looked at as an important person for some random cause.
Now, that's not to say some of the lashing isn't warranted, but studios have absolutely gone to extreme measures (and even stated so at times) because of stuff like this.
However, nobody can argue Sonic is absolutely horribly portrayed by.. whatever this knock-off Monsters Inc. character is supposed to be.

Masterson wasn't found not guilty, they just didn't have the evidence to charge him for the crime(s). Some of the allegations were more recent, and some were investigated at the time and reopened when the recent stuff came to light (apparently the Church of Scientology might have had a hand in shutting down the older investigation.) But the crimes themselves were over a decade ago, and it's hard to prosecute a crime like that.
Roseanne was more of an internal thing with her ultimate boss, Disney. You don't do anything to tarnish the Disney brand unless you can bring the stock price up. James Gunn could, Roseanne couldn't.

Funny and I was thinking some of his recent netflix movies have actually been decent. The Do-Over was really pretty good for example.

Isn't this movie meant for kids?
There's an indictment of nerd culture in here somewhere.
I don't know. I think movies like this and Detective Pikachu, while being "meant for kids", are still clearly banking on the people that grew up with those series coming out to see them. Same with something like Power Rangers. I'd wager at least half the people that play the games are adults that grew up with the series, Pokemon especially. Sonic maybe not so much, but that's just because most new Sonic games are terrible.
No, you should all be anxious because Jim Carrey's in it. That man has been cinematic poison for decades now.
Well then I would say that any adults who are going to see this should not temper their expectations because Sonic's teeth are too human, or his body too weird, or his arms too blue (oh the irony in this statement).

And that truly the most alarming part of this Sonic trailer is Jim Carrey.
The blue arms were in reference to Chris Chan. I'm not gonna link anything because it would probably be NSFW, but you can google it if curious.
The movie will release with some minor change that has verrrrry little to do with the actual complaints.
"Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen."

Back to the editing room!
I guess the reaction wasn't good and they are doing something about it.

"Why does Sonic look disproportionate to his normal self?"
etc.

This made me literally laugh out loud.

- Danny Masterson on The Ranch was let go because of a rape allegation (or several, maybe?) that had been handled years prior (and found not guilty I believe?)
