DOUBLE UPDATE: FOUND by rlh! WOW!! UPDATE: It was lost Game Boy NFR Game Shipped in a Regular White

Has anyone had this happen to them before? I am guessing the seller was new or something as it was his first ever sold item, but some reason he used a regular white envelope to ship a very rare Game Boy Color NFR game in a white envelope with Canada Post. I received the envelope in my mailbox a few days ago and one side was torn open and it was empty (the middle torn part was me as I was confused what was this). I am just shocked like...what the hell is going on? I am also feeling like he maybe never even sent it, but it says he paid 3.12 in postage, so something was in there. I messaged him about it waiting for a response. Don't know what to do now.

This is the game lost/stolen so if anyone did spot one like this with the back sticker with similar wear, most likely it is this one.

  • Oh boy! That is a BAD one, definitely deserves a place on the NintendoAge Top Ten shipping fails, lol!

Hope this one resolves in your favour, anyway, looks pretty open and shut to me!
  • Yeah, it is nuts right? Like man I am just shocked right now. Took me a few days to figure out what this was as I thought it was some spam mail or prank and my heart dropped realizing this was for that game. Waiting so many years for it only to be lost/stolen due to an unheard shipping method for games.

What is weird though is why would they put it in my mailbox it if was opened and empty? They would alert me ahead right?
  • 29 grams seems about right for the game plus the envelope.

See what the seller says, but it does look like someone stole it, but from the look of the cut, I wouldn't rule out an accidental cut/rip that led to the game falling out...?

Either way, how much did you pay for the game? Unless you got a super crazy bargain at 1$, it doesn't seem like an acceptable way of shipping an expensive game. Then again maybe it was wrapped in bubble wrap.

I've had a package arrive empty, crushed and open at my office some time ago, mailman was almost gone (without saying anything!) but I manaed to stop him in time to ask a few things. So yeah, not surprised they left the letter and left like batman. I immediately thought of theft or accidental damage, but it turned out from the weight of the package printed on the slip that the package had been sent empty. Managed to solve that one after many months with the seller...

Suggest you to keep super cool with the seller   -- getting up in flames won't make your game appear magically anyway. Hopefully you can at least get a full refund.
  • You will 100% get a full refund at least. When I was selling cheaper stuff on eBay I sent two cheap games in bubble mailers without tracking to save on cost and BOTH apparently never showed up. I had to refund out of pocket since there was no tracking. Lesson learned and I never sent any game without tracking again. A complete joke as shipping goes from $2 or $3 up to about $15 for tracking regardless of what you're shipping. This guy is about to learn the hard way too. This was likely stolen by someone along the way.
  • I've had this happen before on a GBA game shipped in a white envelope. Possibly the worst way to ship a handheld cart in the mail. Unfortunately it looks like someone stole the game and you're just going to have to get a refund from ebay. Definitely lame, but at least the refund process is easy and quick.
  • Is this the last one left for your NFR set?
  • The saddest part is if this was stolen from a postal worker, I bet they don't even know what they have. They just saw Zelda and thought "oh, shiny!", and then they peeled the back sticker off and took it to GameStop.
  • Got a response from the seller. So, yeah looks like this was his first time ever shipping anything and he really thought a plain envelope would be enough.  So unfortunate for both of us.

Thanks for the replies. So it does happen receving empty stuff without any warning. Yikes. Will see what resolution we can come up with.

To answer questions, yeah it was near $100, so definitely would have counted for some far decent packing. For Game Boy Color, I only needed this one, and Donkey Kong Country.

    Wait, what the fuck

First of all, first time I sold something on Ebay. By its side an enveloppe would make sens.

Second, this is not supposed to happen. I know the "world" of resold games is very VERY thief-ish but not at this point.

This mean the mail security is not adequate for even to someone to sell something.

  • I find it very unrespectful when someone sends a 100$ item (whatever it is) in a plain envelope without any protection. No excuse. At this point it doesn't matter but it probably didn't even have bubble wrap around it. If this had been shipped in a small box, without being able to "feel" the game inside the envelope, you would have received it. His fault and hope you get the money back. And add this seller to the forum's hall of shame (is there one here?).
  • That's a huge bummer, man! Love that game too--didn't know it had an NFR.
  • Seller, if you're on NA and reading this, shame on you for shipping an expensive game like that. Instant "never dealing with that guy" material.
  • I'm not at all throwing shame but just taking the opportunity to mention that any time you buy anything expensive or rare (because you can luck out and find rare stuff for cheap) email the seller and ask them about shipping. I've even offered to pay extra for shipping for some of the rarer stuff, or asked about specifics when the seller appeared to be just some random person cleaning out their closet.

I'm not saying this was preventable but I can say that after hearing about this and the infamous CIB Magic Piano, I try to do my best to be assured that my stuff doesn't get trashed in shipping.

I'm really sorry OP. Hopefully you'll get your money back and find another one. I've waited a long time to find some rare games, found one, and literally within a week found another. In that specific case, the new listing was in even better condition.
  • You guys live in luxury, the locals that ship stuff here use hardly any packing material , so you get an unprotected cart floating about in a large box for a day or two.

I once bought some books on the Frisian language, and at some point along the way, the package got torn open and I just received an empty envelope.

If the guys new he probably didn't know better. Even my folks ask me to help them pack stuff, as they rarely mail items but know I've sent clay tea pots around the world and back again without a scratch.

Hey the refund, and if the guy works with you, don't ding his feedback. Offer him a kindly advice and move on.

Sound advice for anybody new to the hobby as well. Leaving a neg on someone's account should be reserved for only the worst scenarios.

  • Maybe it's just me but I ship just about everything in a box, it may cost more but it seems more professional even though I don't sell much stuff on Ebay. For you folks doing real numbers on Ebay I could understand trying to save a couple bucks.

There's a big gap between shipping in a secure box and this. Like dude could've at least sprung the dollar for a padded mailer and maybe put a couple little cardboard sheets in there to protect it, or something. There's just no effort less than the one put forth here, short of writing the shipping info on the game itself.

  • I had the exact same thing happen to me.

I called the post office and asked them to talked to there delivery person. The postal worker looked for the game and found it.

Have you contacted the post office? Do so if you havent.
  • I've had an idiot or two mail me a game in a letter envelope too, and I'm 1 for 2 on that. Miraculously one of the games did arrive, in another case the classic blown out cheap paper envelope vomited out its precious gameboy contents into the processing machine or some postal workers curious hands along the way and it was refunded with apologies from the seller. It's a hard lesson, both sides, since you lose what you were finally finding at a value you appreciated lost to incompetence, and the fool who did it is out a game, shipping, and then the value of the game too in the end.
  • I mean...use common sense? Why would anyone put something valuable in a thin envelope...just...wut.
  • Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but dropping an f-bomb in your customer service reply is totally inappropriate just on a professionalism level. Also...he knows that the world is very "thief-ish" but not at this point? What does that even mean? It's dangerous out there...but also it's totally fine out there!

Skorp, I feel for you on this one. Sorry for your loss
  • Lol he didn't even apologize, I'd straight up block him on ebay right now.

Dude's name is Francois, spelled with the accent and everything. I'm sure that was an English fail of some kind.

  • Y'all need to give this guy a break... first time selling something, it's international shipping, an obvious language barrier, etc. He simply tried to save $15-$20 (over 10% of the value) on shipping and got burned likely because someone stole it along the way. Simple as that. I've had it happen and it's really frustrating. For all the seller knows, Skorp could have opened this, took the game and then started a claim saying it arrived the way it did. It's probably just as likely from his perspective (no offense Skorp) as it is that someone stole it along the line. As Skorp said above, just unfortunate for the seller and himself as the seller is out of pocket and Skorp is out the game.

Agree 100% on this, been on both sides before, stuff happens.
  • How does that even happen?
  • What an unbelievable tool! How cheap can somebody be?
  • Yeah, just really sucks. Like someone pointed out, I could easily be making this up as there really isn't actual tracking, so how can I help prove this happened to him and I'm not making it up. Gonna talk with my mail carrier as I know him to see if he was the one that gave me this. Very sure it was a postal worker at my post office. Feel bad for him though as his first sale and it ends up like this. He really thought people do not steal and it would be safe enough to ship in a regular envelope.
  • If there's no tracking, the smart scam as a buyer is to just say it didn't arrive. Easy free item. Imo, the fact that Skorp didn't do that would be evidence of him not scamming (from the pov of a seller who doesn't know him).

And yeah Quaze, you're totally right that it was a language barrier. I was super groggy when I read the thread this morning, and that was silly of me to post. I got riled up by the contradiction and jumped on it
  • Hey guys, so he said he will not refund me without a letter saying it was stolen from the post office as well as a picture which I already sent to him. He really thinks I am lieing and is very pissed off. (I don't blame him)

Did send him a kind message but also explained to him why an envelope was just not a good idea especially for a video game as it is very easily to be seen if you press down on the evelope, which probably someone did see it.
  • UPDATE: Sorry to double post, but so I was at the post office and talked to them for near 30 minutes. So, the good news is it actually wasn't stolen. It was lost due to the conveyor belt cutting it. He did explain that the side that was open how clean of a cut it was. So, whoever posted about the conveyor belt, you were right! He said he will get me a letter for him, so that's good.   He couldn't explain why I got it though. He said they would attached a notice to the envelope/packing stating some issue with it. I guess that also fell of or something lol.
