1up Retro Nintendo World Championships
I looked for a thread on this but couldn't find anything.
So I was playing at a local arcade yesterday and they had a playchoice 10, which had NWC loaded on it. I thought awesome... i've never played that. So I did and loved it.
Anyway turns out a couple companies make repros...which I am always against. I have a legit little samson and think repros are an abomination. But that being said NWC is legit out of the hands of many, what do you guys think about 1upretros cart and the other ones on the market? Im conflicted

Edit: just looked at the 1up Retro version of the Gold. That's a little too close to the original for me to be comfortable with.

I buy games to play, not as a status symbol in the community, I'm assuming that people that by repros are people that WANT to play the games. In all respect to you: I will never understand the appeal of NWC cart. I appreciate the gameplay, not the price tag. That is why I can't wait to get my hands on egg mania that i just bought.
Also, while I understand the appeal of nintendo to people's childhood, people go WAY overboard about the meaning of these games in their life. Same with the Star War franchise and many other things. I prefer to reveal in my own accomplishments rather than see my life through the lens of ninendo or gaming in general.
But that's just me.

Its all about balance, for me I want to be able to play the cart and maybe have home competitions with buddies
Why not just buy the retroUSB cart for almost half the price. https://www.retrousb.com/product_...
Oh right on!
It was never a mass produced item, restricted to the finalists, a few employees, and the Nintendo Power contest winners. As long as the reproductions don't resemble the originals, like using a non-standard shell or relocating the DIP switches, I don't mind them existing. Edit: just looked at the 1up Retro version of the Gold. That's a little too close to the original for me to be comfortable with.
1up Retro version of the Grey also looks almost identical to an original Grey NWC ..About the only 2 things that give it away (Grey version )as being a reproduction is the wording on the top portion of the label does not look quite the same as an original cart .And the Dipswitches on both the Grey and the Gold carts they offer do not look the same as the original carts ,which in my opinion is NOT a good enough indicator that the carts being sold are indeed REPRODUCTIONS ..Especially for folks that might decide to purchase one second hand that has never seen an original cart to be able to tell the difference. The site /reproduction owners should put somewhere on the cart this is indeed a REPRODUCTION,like RetroUSB did with their reproduction NWC carts ..
I am against repros of rare/expensive games ,especially repros that are made to look almost identical to the originals ..At one time the only way to play the NWC in cart form without purchasing an original cart is to buy one of the reproductions that Retrousb sells ,which they produce to look nothing like an original..Now several other reproduction companies make repro NWC carts that look way too close to an original cart ,and that in my opinion will be problematic in the future for unsuspecting folks who are in the market to purchase an original NWC cart .Counterfeiters are getting to good at their craft these days ,which in turn will eventually mess up legitimate sales of NWCs .The same holds true for Stadium Events ..I was just in a local retro game store last week and they had a fake Stadium Events on display ,and the scary thing was it was a very good fake .Thank God the store staff had the integrity to admit it was indeed a fake ..
I doubt you are going to find many people who either know what NWC is, more less willing to spend 40k on it. The same goes for little sampson and the rest of the nes carts that collectors want. Like I said, if you want to buy your way into a status symbol, be my guest. If you are lucky enough to find one i the wild, then by all means pick it up and do what you gotta do, but my life is complete without me owning any of these. In fact I only collect for gameboy at this point and couldn't care less about nes games.

I could not disagree more ..The Nintendo World Championships has become a household name amongst folks who grow up in that era ,even folks who do not /did not play Nintendo/Video Games in the 89’s /90’s .Especially Since Pat the NES Punk appeared on PawnStars with his NWC carts ,and the “resurrection “of the NWC with the recent NWC competitions ..Now I do agree there is a select group of folks that would be willing to pay thousands of dollars for a collectible video game ,but the same can be said of any collectible ..

LOL, pat the punk? I can guarantee you that %99.9999999 of people have no clue who that is. There are people in this world that have no clue who michael jordan is, but one episode of pawnstars and an obscure podcaster that makes a 5 minute appearance on a show that probably got less than 3 million views, and all of the sudden NWC cart is a household name, lol.
okay man.

I would hardly consider Nintendo world championship to be a household word. Ask anyone who doesn't hoard Nintendo tapes and they probably haven't got a clue.
My point was with the comment “Household name “is the NWC is a well known video game competition..That is an undeniable fact ..

I'd have to disagree. I'd be surprised if 1/4 of the Nintendo collecting community actually knows about NWC and the competition. From what I've gathered over the past couple years, it's an extremely niche market. Sadly, from what I've seen in the past, a lot of these carts have changed hands for what I consider to be the wrong reasons. To flip for profit. Obviously not all of them have ended up in collector's hands. I can think of 2 instances over the last 3 months, where carts have changed hands, and a month or so later, went back up for sale at a huge mark-up

I sincerely doubt the next time you're out for dinner and you ask your waiter their thoughts and feelings about the nwc competition that they'll have any idea what you're talking about.

Exactly my point. I probably know more than your average joe blow and I don't even know how to spell the character's name right. Me personally, I have only gotten into collecting for a little over a year and even since then, I realized that a lot of things that I was told by the metaljesus crew, or youtube videos or game shops, or many other people seem to be group think.
I bought Super Metroid, because of the legions of fans that said it was a great game, and I just sold that on ebay never getting 1hour into the game. I finished about half of earthbound before I decided that it was pointless and a lot of the game was just hiding stuff or making you believe one thing only to throw you into a dead end. Like when you have to see the owner of chaos theater and give him the wad of cash, which you do, but then if you don't walk behind him, you're stuck. I sold that on ebay too, never finishing the game because it seems like it cheats you.
Everybody and there mother will tell you that the ags-101 is the best gameboy console just because it has the brightest screen, without considering all the factors that might make somebody choose a different model.
Again, my collecting habits are getting refind to WHAT I WANT, not what people tell me I have to have. And I am learning as I go.
But at this point, I am a full fledged gameboy collector.

If you don't use a fanny pack to carry your DMG and a small handful of tapes, you aren't a real collector!

100% this
NWC isn't any different than a bootleg Mario Kart or Little Samson, there's no gameplay reason to own a repro, let alone paying $100+ dollars for a fake but that's another story.
Just play a ROM. If you "just want to play it" then play it. If you're buying repros you want the shelf appeal of bootleg games.

agree
So I got a repro and love playing it with the guys. Fun to compete. Does anyone know what the high score was during the original competition and also which dip switches were flipped for the competition?
Did you buy one from retro usb? If so it has the official time and ways to set the dip switches in the instruction manual
Thanks again!
edit: also buying that kamikaze SMB3 because bring on the pain!
