Gaming Expo vs Collectors Convention

Here's an interesting hypothetical...

Suppose there are 2 co-existing events that will happen only once in this century, and you have the choice and money to only buy 1 ticket from either event, which would you choose? The events and imaginary setting are as follows:

Gaming Expo of the Century - features:

- All the top arcades of yesteryear from classic beat em ups in Final Fight, Golden Axe to the the classic 2D fighters in StreetFighter 2, Mortal Kombat; to arcade shooters in After Burner, Darius; and anything else that had made you loose your pocket money back in those days!

- All the top gaming consoles, attached to their original kiosks with working controllers such as Genesis/Megadrive, Super Nintendo, NES, N64, Mega/Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox etc.

- All the top games from each console platform for you to try out, as well as all the obscure/rare games that you might never have heard before

- All the different controllers that were officially released for all platforms are available for use

- You are permitted to touch and play everything that you see

Collectors Convention - features:

- All the rarest games as well as most popular or sought after games for all the console platforms

- All the mintiest of mint games, including items with high grades from VGA or WATA

- All original prototypes and unusual rare misprints that are known to exist

- Rare contollers and other rare gaming peripherals

- Expensive and rare original gaming art all costing $100,000 or more (basically art where Bronty would get a boner)

- You may touch the games and check the inside contents (if non-sealed) but not allowed to play them

- You are not permitted to open any of the sealed games

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 ticket for 1 entry only - which would you choose?

  • Judging by that write up I guess it's clear what I'd use my ticket on lol

Sorry to use your name in vain Bronty, but I wanted to convey the message that the art is holy moly rare!

  • Wait, can we BUY any of the games at the collecting convention? I already voted for that before I read the description, assuming this was the case. I've got plenty of games at home to play, the gaming expo is unnecessary... As far as I'm concerned, playing games is like masturbating: best done behind closed doors!

However, if we CAN'T buy the games at the collecting convention, then I'd rather go to the gaming expo. Too much blue balls looking at a bunch of games I wanna buy otherwise, lol!

    lol it’s cool

  • Thing is we can play games any time. Seeing rarities is harder to do. You could create a 'gaming expo' in your basement for 200 and some free roms

Some of us could also create a collector convention in our spare room, lol. Wait, I already have.

That's why I voted gamer convention, could have a memorable time with others. Regarding collecting, it would need to be something truly amazing to impress me
  • If you go to MGC you get both!
  • If I was going with a non collecting friend, the first one.

By myself or a fellow collector, the second.

Let’s keep it simple and say: no buying allowed!

so a short summary, your choice between:

    A. Gaming until you collapse or get blue balls.

    B. Staring and touching until you collapse or get blue balls.

You can always see rarities from eBay or Google pics. Or enter into Bronty’s Facebook art fan groups.

The answer becomes tricky if you’re actually into both collecting and gaming. I was almost tempted to answer “undecided”, but chose Gaming Expo purely because I think it’d be so awesome playing all the arcades from the past. And gives me a chance to catch up with some old gaming mates.

In addition, what sort of rarities are going to be present? Sealed games do literally nothing for me, and I reckon I have some pieces equally rare in my personal collection (pulse line F1 race for example, Hwang long famiclone boxed, etc). We need to remember that market value does not equate to rarity at all.

So if I went to the collector expo, I imagine it would be a snooze fest filled with typical "popular" rarities and some sealed stuff for good measure, not really something to get me excited about.
  • If i wanted a gaming convention i'd stay home
  • I'd much rather go to an expo than a convention. Expos are for businesses to show their goods and you can buy them. Conventions are to connect with other businesses and isn't about the product at all.
  • I voted for the Collector's Convention, but if I couldn't buy anything then I'd probably stay home.
  • I'm going with collectors convention. Like many others here I'll echo that I've got plenty of games at home and if it tickles my fancy there's a very nice retro arcade right down the road. Plus he recently got a liquor license. Niiice.
  • I find myself wondering which group of attendees is more likely to shower. May affect my answer.
  • The reason I like The Ohio Retro Gamers Convention is that they have both. No need to choose.

You got to take the good with the bad when it comes to any conventions!

Though I’d imagine the gaming centre would be more odourous with BO, sweats and/or wet pants. The collection centre might just get the wet pants and less BO.

  • "Gaming"-y conventions like MAGFest are great, but their marketplaces have gone to total garbage, just anime and cosplay crap. Barely any games anymore! Gimme a convention where I can buy nice games!

    NERK!

Wouldn't mind hitting that one some year, but the timing for me is horrible since it's right between CORGS and CCAG.

  • My vote is bronty boner

I attend east coast MAGfeast every year seems to be a little bit of everything. Auction had a full size hitman form the studio office sell for 300 only one bid lol.

But really it’s all about the arcades hope to bring  rtype 2 and Kiki kaikai to this years!!!

  • I'd rather play a Vectrex with a stack of games than just look at one behind glass.

LOL at a "collector's convention" where nothing is for sale and there is nothing to collect. Waste of time and money.
  • A vectrex isn't exactly a notable piece from a collector POV. Whatever your ultimate gaming collectible would be, imagine that there. You're never going to see one, or it, for unique items, in your life, but you can at least see them here. That's interesting. Imagine Miyamoto's original sketch for Mario, or prototype hardware, or a gold nwc if that does it for you, or cover art like that does it for me. Whatever strikes your fancy... don't limit your imagination to a mass produced used console with a pile of mass produced used games.     If you do limit your thinking in that way, then sure, a collector's convention won't seem interesting.
  • Bronty makes a good point.

I'd love to be able to see one of a kind of items.

    Can play games anytime, mostly.
  • For an example of super rare, the "Nintendo Playstation" has made its rounds at shows near me. I've seen it, I can't recall if they let you play it or if it even works.

You can't bid on the sketch in auction, you can't demo the prototype, I guess you could at least touch the nwc! XD

Seems way too limited in terms of "engagement"

Sounds more like an alrite museum, but pretty $hitty for a convention
  • Gaming Expo all the way. I can't justify those collectors prices as it is, but the puffed up ones at a captive audience are beyond a turn off. The Gaming Expo will get a range of good deals and the bad too, but at least there's far far more there to do and have fun seeing and experimenting with. I do a gaming expo a year and it's a really fun day of it.
