Non-gaming Purchases People Wouldn't Understand

Do you have purchases that you have made that if you tell your friends or co-workers about, they would think you were crazy for spending the money?

Me:

My wife and I are big fans of Columbo (late 60s-90s detective TV series). You can purchase the DVD complete set for not much money. They remastered the set and released it on Blu-ray years ago in Japan. It never made it over to the US. Finally bit the bullet and imported it a year ago. If you don't know about film and tv releases in Japan, they are not cheap. I think it cost $350.

What about you?

  • I bought a pair of seats from Wrigley field that were removed after the Cubs won the World Series. They were about $1000 after shipping and getting the wooden seat "feet" to make them stable and to slide across the floor.
  • I would say worth it.
  • Spending ungodly amounts of money on re-doing a '77 Trans Am. The cost of bodywork was enough to buy an already done car. But I have my reasons
  • I buy expensive (video game related...) statues and figures. Some upwards of a thousand dollars (ok not THAT expensive). Most people I tell don't quite get it though.
  • $1.25m on a house

    $80k on a car

It keeps me up at night. Worth it only if I'm in a good mood.

Anyone in California probably understands the former, depending on where you live, of course.

Indeed. My million dollar house is a shithole.

That doesn't sound too spacey a lot of people would relate to a movie-related hobby. Columbo might be an offshoot type of interest but still...

  • Non-gaming? Don't think there is such a thing, all I buy is gaming stuff. I like variants to games and consoles, and people don't understand that.
  • Technically I had my PC built to game but I use it for a lot of different things...I think the end total was $1,500 or around that? I know I had to skip a new monitor since I couldn't afford it at the time...all the money went into the tower. I still have this POS monitor that has dead pixels and burn in a few years later...this monitor is 10 years old...one day I'll wake up and it'll be dead. Seriously need to replace it.

And while it's related to gaming...in that it's to protect my games...I'm going to buy a ac/heater/dehumidifier unit that's about $300-$700+. Depending on where you get it. Cheapest I can find is $315. My parents can't understand my need for one...

I want to understand. Don’t leave us hanging...

  • I'm fooling, but I bet that's a situation you couldn't come up with a decent reason for.
  • Sympathy for the girlfriend, but not the will or desire to give her better yourself.
  • See I think you would still come out a dog in that story. It might be funny though.

Honestly there isnt much to look at. The body work got done and its in primer. No interior or anything its just a shell at this point

  • I've never understood the appeal of scratch tickets. I watch people drop beaucoup bucks every day on those.
  • Can spend 80 to 100 for t shird I found cool...
  • I have a Jeep Wrangler. 'Nuff said.

Yes, please explain this one to me. My understanding is that they demagnetize over time and the picture is ruined.

There is someone on Instagram that may interest you. She collects VHS tapes and also does art based on their covers.

pardon my French, but that's some bad info there...I have a bazillion VHS tapes from the 80s for example - there still good to go! Maybe a little warm n fuzzy, but that's kinda the whole point! I guess maybe if you store your tapes next to industrial magnets, something weird might happen... But I haven't tried that yet.
