Mt everest

So like 9 people have died in the past couple weeks on everest, the viral photo going around with the wall of people on the summit is just astonishing to me. I know Darwin, blah blah blah, but still! If you are in the middle of that log jam at the summit, you are totally fucked! Crazy how everyone just decided to climb everest this year for some reason.

Yeah that photo is nuts (I'll add it later)! I read that too many inexperienced people are attempting the hike. At that altitude you don't get enough oxygen even when you carry extra supplies of it.

Personally I don't think Darwinism has much to do with these deaths. I personally admire people that challenge themselves, but a traffic jam at Everest... too many people on this planet!! Myself, I'll stick to the White Mountains. Need to hike Washington again
  • They're probably going to start severely limiting the number of people climbing at one time. I know Everest is a big money maker for Nepal, but goddamn.

It's actually kind of astonishing how many deaths per year some of these super high mountains rack up. K2 kills like one in every four people that try to climb it.
  • I have watched many documentaries about Everest. experts say 90% of deaths are not due the climbers not have the ability or experience....they are caused by overcrowding from to many expedition companies trying to summit. With no laws about who goes where it is like the wild west up there. So sad.

    That's insane.

But anyone who who willingly goes up there is taking their life in their own hands, no matter what. Still so so whacky.

Is there a documentary on Netflix you'd reccomend?

Not sure that it's on Netflix anymore (it used to be), but there's a show that I know is on Prime called Everest beyond the limit.  Camera crews following a guide and his climbers up the mountain.  Pretty interesting.
  • Oh man. I have seen them all. I know it was on netflex and Xfinity on demand. One tv series for sure. You will just have to search them out. I would but I am catching up on the hockey game

That is the one that took out all the interest in doing it for me.  Way too much waiting for the line of people and teams from other countries with zero mountaineering experience.

    Same actually!

I've always found mountaineering to be fascinating.  There's certainly an allure to it, but turning something so cool and epic into a guided hike (I realize that's oversimplifying it), just killed it for me.

I did watch one really interesting documentary somewhat on the same subject, K2: Siren of the Himalayas, that was super interesting.
  • https://www.amazon.com/Into-Thin-Air-Personal-Disaster/dp/0679457526 This is also a good book, but all the movies are terrible. Lots of guys with beards in the snow so you can't tell who is who.
  • I've never understood why people want to climb these huge mountains...they're basically death traps. Smaller mountains I could see going just for the experience (not that I'd ever do it!) but the big ones like Everest...what the hell. The sad thing is the bodies stay up there. Unless you wanna pay out the ass to get your loved one down...which can also risk the recovery teams lives in the process too!

    Because they're there.

  • The Sherpas are the ones that really suffer since they take multiple strips to aid the people attempting to summit. They've started to revolt in recent years after the excessive deaths cause to them by this overcrowding. There's a really neat documentary called Sherpa that talks about this.

    It's called an adventure.
  • Wow, this blows my mind. Minimal regulation on something like this? What???? It sounds cool and all, but if it's not structured for reasonable success then no thank you. On the opposite spectrum this is kinda like being forced to sit in a hot car with the windows up in 100 degree weather because of overcrowding, right?
  • you know what, used to be an adventure and very cool thing. maybe one of the coolest things you can do on this planet. But now? Sorry not impressed with your hike up a mountain with a parade of other midlife crisis dicks. This being reality totally kills it for me

Same here. I was interested several years ago but not now, not knowing what I know about the Sherpas and how the government of Nepal does very little for them. Now I'll just have to settle for an ultramarathon in Antarctica

  • $11,000 to climb a mountain and they are overselling. What could go wrong with no oversight.

It's more like $50,000 once you figure in the expedition fees.

Good grief. So 11K for just permission from Nepal and then 50K on top of that. So you have to have supplemental oxygen no matter what to reach the summit right?

There have been a handful of people who have summited Everest without oxygen. They're pretty hardcore, though.

I imagine you need to move really slow to accomplish that.

This. It's really the exception though... and not too smart IMO. There have quite a few deaths from hypoxia, right behind deaths from avalanches and falls: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_died_climbing_Mount_Everest

  • I watched this documentary back when it was new at the Museum of Science.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everest_(1998_film)

It looked like such an amazing adventure until the reality of severe frostbite started to be shown in grave detail. Great film if anyone can find it!

Yeah well leaving the house is horrifying to you.

Some people have motivation and drive to do things that the average person couldn't do. If you loved climbing, dying while doing it wouldn't be the worst thing

I'm sure these guys think that until they are actually dying while stuck in a traffic jam on the mountain

Then again... dying from hypoxia you don't really care about much... and dying from hypothermia, you just kind of get tired and go to sleep and never wake up.

Is there supplemental reporting on how many additional adventurers are ending up with permanent damage of some kind of the slow pace of trekking right now?

Or do they only track deaths?

Again, a lot of people are blaming "inexperience". Although Peter Hillary notes that being able to call it quits is key.

    https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/world/2019/05/sir-edmund-hillary-s-son-says-there-are-too-many-inexperienced-climbers-on-mt-everest.html

"I really oppose any sort of regulations; the whole idea is the freedom of the hills, the adventure, what we really need is people to apply more common sense to do their apprenticeship," he told The Project on Tuesday night. "But really what else can we do? I don't know if you can remove people with inadequate experience if they choose to try to pretend that they have it." When questioned about tour groups that advertise climbing Mt Everest as a fun holiday with no experience necessary, Peter said they are a small fraction of the market but they do exist.

Can't say I have ever been inclined to hike Everest, but as someone that has hiked up many "small" mountains (less than 15,000 ft) it is super fun! That line though... yikes!!
  • You know there are other mountains out there...and with all these people climbing Everest, who's gonna care anymore about climbing it?
