My heart warms remembering Lucid. That's the first version of Ubuntu I took seriously.

Best of luck OP! Hope you bring it back to life.

    Ahhhh lucid

hahaha... I’ve been running 18 lately and encountering some bugs... I’m building some secure systems for a few airlines which I cannot name here...

but I digress... hahah sorry, I love nerding out!

  • That link seems to be a dead conversation. Is this data useable for any particular group of people? Could those demo files be that ones my console is missing? I'll try to get a male to male usb cable tomorrow to see if that bridges the connection. At least after all this effort the HD wasn't empty. Linux is like a who new world for me.
  • Linux is THE world for anyone looking to master a system, imho lol. It is well worth learning and will make most windows and Mac systems look weak compared to the abilities of a truly fleshed out Linux system. I often convey to most people that trying to do anything in Windows or Mac (when compared to Linux) is like trying to run a marathon in a full leg cast.

The files may absolutely be useful and if this were my own system, the first goal I would have right now is to get a clone of that hard drive pulled down so that you can poke around without messing anything up on the primary drive. Always best to work in a sandbox when you can.

Make the clone of this drive your goal, and I'm sure that then info gathered along the way will become very useful.
  • It appears both the demo and client update folders are beefy in size. Also, the files are able to be copied to the desktop. Going to bed, maybe a fresh usb plugged in and formatted to at least save the larger data for now? I have zero available ssd drives at the moment. Would a larger 128gb flash drive do it for now. Gotta sleep, thanks for all the help.
  • Awesome!!!

Pull down all demo folders/firmware/anything that seems useful, and see if you can get a blank FAT32 USB plugged into that machine to copy the files over to it.

Remember.. MAKE COPIES... don't move the files out of their original positions... location is everything in Linux.

Once you have what you want on a new USB, you can research them, share them freely for analysis and some people better suited for WiiU dev may be able to point you in better directions as to understanding what they're for/do.

Unfortunately I'm not even sure I've ever even held a wiiu before lol... I simply know my way around Linux. The Ubuntu label in this threads title is what got me in here haha

Get those files out safely while keeping the originals intact, and let's see if you can get that harddrive copied!
  • I'm currently copying everything but the demos over that isn't locked by permissions. That includes scripts, client updates and firmware along with a bunch of other random stuff that may or may not be useful. It just all fit on a 32gb usb stick. The demos are 44gb so are too large, that will have to be copied in 2 parts on 2 other sticks. I'll put everything back together on my computer and see about how to upload everything in one shot.
  • Here is a file called serial, it was in the main SES folder with all the other bigger files. Would the password be in here somewhere?
  • Awesome. Keep dumping everything you can and fill up USB sticks. Someone may be able to help ID the files once they're dumped. This really does sound to me like a wiiu dev style kiosk that was issued prelaunch of the console itself. Just a hunch though...

Once you have the files dumped to USB sticks, I'd focus heavily on trying to clone the entire harddrive to a brand new drive and tinkering around with the new one. I'd highly suggest reading up on gparted on the raspbian OS... a raspberry pi could be very helpful here in cloning the partitions of this unit effectively... and it's pretty user friendly. Other option is to create a Linux live CD, boot from the USB, mount the kiosk drive, and clone it...(the raspberry pi sounds a bit easier especially if you've never dabble in Linux.

As for the serial.pdf, I'm only able to access NA from my phone right now, so I'll peel through it and report back once I can get to one of my boxes.
  • I just saw your post on gbatemp... sounds like those guys are suggesting similar things to what I'm saying here... at least you know we're all here to help and try to guide you in the right direction

This kind of tinkering is my passion... I love new projects haha and I wish I was local enough to help you in person. That'd be a really cool thing to know you were able to successfully preserve such a cool piece of gaming history.

  • Ok, I've pretty much copied all I can without the admin profile. Man, most of these files are over my head. What would be a good incognito place to upload, I'm not sure of the legality of upping this, and what is the best format. Zip files or as the folders are now. This is where I'm at on my windows PC. How would I go about trying to single boot? The SES folder is the one with all the large demo/client files.

  • The password file is no longer used for anything worthwhile in modern distros of Linux. (Lucid Lynx would still be considered a modern distro. The important stuff is located in /etc/shadow. I don’t believe you’ll be able to open/view the file without escalated privileges though.

  • Sorry for prior post, I went to edit and think I quoted myself inside of the response. My remark is at the bottom of the quote

So I think it'd be best to try and find a wiiu dev or at least someone with an SDK. Since you're technically the owner of this kiosk now, I'd suspect you have rights to it... although I could be wrong about that.

I'd probably make a copy of your copies and send it to whomever offers the most help... that or maybe some sort of online share drive? (Again the legality question of the situation is raised in doing that, though).

I'd look now to try and make a clone of the overall drive. If you can afford the 40$, a raspberry pi with a preloaded micro sd containing raspbian may be the best bet here. I'd lookup some tutorials on using a pi and some tutorials on gparted to get started
  • I'm looking into cloning the whole drive, I posted some stuff on another website as I know posting stuff here regarding these kinds of things are sometimes frowned upon. I was hoping someone can take a look at some of the files and determine if anything is at least useful before I go through the effort of cloning the drive. I figured out finally how the box hooks up to my demo console, although the console still gives errors so I feel like it's something that can never be fixed unless some kind of documentation can be found, it's too complex a puzzle of wires and tech I know nothing about. It's also possible the console had to be hooked up to the internet for everything to be fully working. If there was anything useful on the drive, that would at least be a gain from all of this, like i said, maybe it helps anyone interested understand how the demo consoles worked.
  • I love this kind of NA talk. So interesting and learning about new things despite years of being here. Keep up the good work koko and lambda
  • Here is the only file named shadow in the /etc folder. I'm not sure if this is what you are after. Windows needed notepad to open it.

So at this point with everything you’ve copied, I can say for sure that the WUMAD files and a few others are definitely of interest to a wiiu sdk owner/developer.

Maybe it’d be worth editing the title of this thread to include the fact that you’re looking to consult with a wiiu sdk owner/dev. That may cause someone to pop in on this thread and toss their hat into the ring on this. A wiiu dev will definitely be able to help you more than I can when it comes to the usage of these files you’ve dumped.

  • No problem, I appreciate the help. I plan on upping the whole drive hopefully in the next couple of days, I'll shoot you a message for if you feel like poking around, thanks again!
  • Any time man, happy to help!

just to summarize what we now know about the disk after the commands you ran, in case they become useful to a dev, if you can find one:

the system is running Lucid (Ubuntu 10)

the user you have access to may or may not have SU privilege IF we can locate the accounts password.

the user you have access to is not root, but we are unsure if root account is even active on this disk (Ubuntu usually disables root account upon install, however this distro has been modified, so root may or may not be active.)

    we know the kernel version.

User has access to move some of the folders/files on the disk

disk is unlocked via the USB key found inside of the console

  • Yep! I''ll be uploading the drive for people to poke into, maybe someone will figure out how to unlock all the files and replicate/figure out the way it all works. Then I'll know if it's really a door stop, but at least I'll know. I can't stand mysteries, at all.
  • Finally found a place to upload the entire 80gb folder with all the demo files, thanks again for the help. I'll be trying to up the entire image later this week including the usb key.
