Retro Collecting Retirement Plans

Like a working paid-job, all good (or bad) things will inevitably come to a close. Whether it’d be due to age, bad arthritis, wanting to spend more time with the family etc., the word “retirement” is going to hit us sooner or later.

So in a similar vein, where we substitute this gaming hobby as our “job” in the above, when do we foresee ourselves retiring? And if so, what do you plan on doing thereafter?

  • I plan to have my mind uploaded to cyberspace and play games virtually.

Failing that, I think I will keep playing until my thumbs give out. Collecting, probably well before then. It's fun and I don't think I have a collection that will get in the way too much, but acquiring more games will Peter out for me long before I stop playing.
  • Playing and collecting till I can't anymore the kids can deal with the mess when I'm done!
  • When I stop buying them I can finally start playing them, hopefully with my son who is due in July!

edit: I do play them, but it’s tough to play all of them, especially when the best way to buy them is in a lot.
  • Lol never.
  • Huh, I never thought about this one. I guess when it comes down to it, collecting has been a part of my life for years now. When will it come to an end? I don't know to be honest. I guess whenever I get tired of it or I have other priorities. The thing about life is that your priorities change, whether it be kids or a new job or just a change in interests. I guess it would take one of those kinds of things to happen for me. Or like I said before, if I get tired of it. I feel like I actually would have gotten out of it already if I didn't join a community like this. At the end of the day I do it because it is fun. Personally, I am starting to shift over to arcade stuff because I enjoy the projects much more than just games. I know my answer was kind of all over the place, but this is just what comes to mind.
  • I don't play to ever retire collecting. I have a list of games from the lifetime of some consoles I'm slowly collecting, and unless I add a new console like the Dreamcast, GameCube, Xbox, or PS2, that list is finite. But even once I've finished collecting everything on that list, I'll always continue collecting homebrews. One day I hope to have kids and share the joy I've known from these games and tell them about how I personally knew some of the homebrewers. But I will hang onto my collection until I die and only then can my kids decide "okay the old man is dead, let's get some money out of this damn clutter"
  • Death is the only retirement for me
  • I hope to be playing SMB 3 on my deathbed.
  • I'll probably stop collecting when physical media stops being produced, but I doubt I'll stop gaming. If nothing else, hopefully it'll keep me sharp.
  • "I'll give you my NES controller when you pry it from my cold, dead hands"
  • I was done collecting early 2019, and now I just plan to enjoy my games until I inevitably have kids one day. Maybe the kids will enjoy them too someday, or sell them off to some two-time scalper.
  • I very likely will be in my actual death bed playing games that bring me back. It won't be the last thing I do, but it'll probably be very close to it.

I intend to be buried with at least one item of my collection as well. Possibly my great grandmothers copy of The Legend of Zelda.
  • Been selling stuff off over the last few years. Came to the realization that I didn't play about 95% of it, wouldn't have time to either, so out it went.

When I was a kid, I thought this game was the pinnacle of video games. I thought there would never be a better game. I imagined I would have a mansion and play it on a big screen TV.

All of my predictions have come true.
  • I can see myself playing a lot of games into my retirement. I have already had the kids and worked on my career in the past. I feel like now that I am in my early 40s I am enjoying games more than I did in the past. I was late to retro collecting because I was getting life events out of the way. The advantage of this is that although prices were high when I got in around 2015 I had plenty of income to counter it.
  • I could see me selling off all the games and systems but just holding onto the advertising here in the near future.
  • I'm planning on selling my copy of The Mutant Virus and retiring with the profits by 2022.
  • After reading the responses, I just realized that there are 2 stages of retirement:

    1. Collecting retirement - not adding further to the collection. Keep the collection either on hold forever or slowly culling down the numbers (or in some cases, quick sellouts).

    2. Gaming retirement - no more playing games.

I think the majority of us would continue to game for life. Even without the physical copies, there are tons of roms to try out, as well as all the mini consoles with a huge chunk of gaming goodness from various platforms.

Personally, I can see myself collecting hardcore for the next 5-10 years, then slowing down the collecting aspect. Would then see myself picking another hobby to focus on, most likely more sports and more travel is the thinking currently.

    Visualize.
  • I grew up on games, I'll age with games.

Seriously I was playing SMB 3 when I was 5...I'm a born gamer...age won't stop me. If I actually end up living past my 50s and 60s...into my 80s...and my hands give me trouble...I can always try VR. I bet they'll have some good stuff by then. I'll work around my failing body to keep playing.

Now for collecting...once I hit my goals...I'm pretty much done. Current gen isn't really interesting me much outside of some Limited Run Games releases/collectors editions. And even then it's PS4/Switch/Vita stuff...Xbone I have 0 interest in. Heck I don't even own any of those systems other then the Vita. I'm much more interested in the classic stuff, it's my bread and butter and what I focus on.

I'm hoping to not be collecting still when I'm 50+...I'm 28 now. I expect the game prices to drop before I hit 50 so I'll have finished my goals by then and can just sit back and enjoy playing.
  • I plan to just enjoy my collection and play them one at a time slowly but surely. I go through phases where I play more than other times. For example, being a teacher it's difficult to game during certain months, plus I recently got back into reading so that took up whatever free time I had. Now that summer is here, I can read and still game.

    Looking forward to it.

Future plans include passing it down to my kid(s) if I ever become a dad.
  • It will happen. As emulation continues to get better, my collection will continue to evolve and eventually be gone.
  • I keep thinking I'll be able to retire off of Just Dances for Wii but then they release more new ones!
  • Collecting? When I stop caring about owning physical releases I guess. Playing? Never. Until death do us part!
  • Selling the collection at age 50 unless I have a kid or a young relative who wants them. Then I'll will it to the lucky little bastard.

    Play 'til I die.
