Why is n64 stuff so cheap compared to nes/snes?

N64 prices are down across the board. I know that cheap reproductions have messed with pricing somewhat, but n64 games have almost always been a cheaper option then say nes or snes.

What gives? Rare n64 games are like 1/10th the price of a rare nes game.. just seems odd, I want to hear your opinions, thanks.

  • It's hard for people to be nostalgic for a console that is hard to make look good on modern televisions, methinks. Obviously there are plenty of folks still playing S/NES on CRT and PVM etc., but I feel like the majority are still connecting to their big widescreens (myself included). There are Hyperkin/Retron/etc. for S/NES, but to my knowledge nothing that very accurately emulates N64. Thus, it's much harder to get a good visual on a modern television with the N64. I have an UltraHDMI N64 and even with that the difference between that and an unmodded N64 is nowhere near as much as, say, between a stock NES and an AVS, or a SNES and a Super NT. It's completely night and day and I think that that's one huge hurdle that the N64 scene will need to resolve before we see a more widespread interest.
  • PlayStation is just better. It's the first time Nintendo lost a console war and it shows. N64 games have a hard time hanging with PS1 games. If someone is collecting that era of games, it's hard to choose N64 over PS1 given how well PlayStation did everything except have a functional D-pad. Oh and no end labels means you have to go CIB if you want an attractive display of games.
  • I'm going to go with gameplay. The NES and SNES were based on 2D gaming, and would still be at the top of one's list for 2D gaming. The 64 was 3D. I'm in the top 5% of N64 lovers out there, and everything from PS2 and on provides better 3D gaming. Add in a lack of support from 3rd party developers for games, and the demand isn't there.

FWIW, the internet also took off in the late 90's, and it took the attention of some portion of gamers too, thus less N64 love.
  • N64 is 3rd most garby Nintendo console behind wiiU and virtual boy. Had some cool ideas, But a small library with games that have not aged that well put it towards the top of the crap heap.
  • Interesting posts so far thanks guys. I hate the controller, i always feel like I'm gonna damage a tight stick.

Doom 64 and rampage world tour are my favorite games to play these days. I've bought and sold my n64 stuff more then I would like to admit. I always find killer deals on a funtastic system and games so "just when I'm out, they pull me back in" like Al Pacino would say.
  • People like the 80s, early 90s, and mid 90s more than the late 90s across the board in many ways. Movies, music, fashion.....perhaps gaming? People just don't have nostalgia for the late 90s
  • Because the games suck

I think part of the reason is that rare N64 games are less scarce than rare NES/SNES games. Yes, Sculptor's Cut will set you back a few of c-notes, but the N64 doesn't have those few keystone games everyone wants to make a full set, unless you're after NFR, which most collector's aren't.

And for many of the reasons mentioned above, the primary market seems to be those who were kids when the N64 originally dropped. It doesn't seem to recruit younger players in droves like the NES and SNES does. Probably because 3D games are common today and the N64 (and others from that generation) just seems like a more primitive version, while well-executed 2D games are more novel to younger players.

  • The people that are nostalgic for 64 hasn't come around yet. My cousin tells me all the time he would like to collect 64 stuff but he just got out of school. The gen that would be nostalgic for it just hasn't been collecting long enough.

I dunno, PS1 prices have started to skyricket and it was basically same time as N64.

N64’s library of good games is relatively small, though its good games are amazing.

I'm nostalgic for it. I'm right here bro.
  • 64 games are down? I was looking at CIB stuff the other day for the first time in a while and couldn't believe how expensive they were. Won't ever be as much as NES/SNES due to later release, generally worse games and a higher production rate.

Complete first party titles are way up from what I can see though.

I was mainly speaking about cartridges. Mario kart 64 is at $28 bucks, super smash bros is at $35 so yeah most carts are down a few bucks nothing major.

I was born in 91 I have friends who are nostalgic about the n64. Not enough to track one down tho.

Adding to this why would i play the n64 version of a game when the ps1/dream would just be a better option.

    The superior controller, obviously.

  • NES games are expensive because the demand is still there and there were a lot less made. If a NES game sold 500,000 copies, that was considered a landmark achievement. Now 500,000 is considered a failure by most of the big gaming companies today.

SNES games are expensive because they have a perfect blend of that classic 2D 16-bit gameplay while being more accessible to most people. They are not nearly as hard as NES games.

Let's face it, beside the first party games, what else does N64 have?
  • Along with the some of the demographic still being relatively young and the rarity factor not really being a thing with the N64, I think PC gaming really took off during the N64 era.

The NES had very little competition

The SNES had the Genesis and PC was starting to take steam, but SNES was still the leader

The N64 was outperformed by the PS1 off the bat and almost every home had a computer by '97 which outperformed the PS1. I had Road Rash on PC during that time and rented Road Rash 64....PC was twice the game as the 64 version.

With all that being said, I have the most nostalgia for the N64 and own the loose set. I put my set together between 2014-2016 and paid $30 for Stunt Racer; $210 for SC; and $80ish each for Super Bowling, Second Attack, and Worms. Prices have clearly risen and will continue to climb. I'm just not holding my breath on them hitting NES/SNES prices...
  • Because the n64s library is mostly garbage and hasn't held up well over time at all? I tried playing 007 last year and holy crap is that a trash game once you've played stuff like CoD. Same goes for Mario kart 64. That has not held up well after playing Mario kart 8. Even smash is pretty broken on the N64

Please dont tell me you are saying the N64 controller is superior to the PS1! If so, mod priveleges revoked!

Micro Machines. That is my group go to game if we don't feel like playing Mario Party. But yeah I agree there's not a lot of quality options for the N64.

I assume you mean the NES version. Yeah, that game still holds up. By far Camerica's best game even though I have a soft spot for Bee 52.

Man I remember getting those carts for $10-15 and spilling them out to eBay when they were $50
  • 1st party titles aren't cheaper than NES ones anyways
  • It' pretty simple NES and SNES era dudes have deeper pockets now that they're 40+ years old. Vs the N64 era guys who are 25 - 35 who are barely figuring stuff out.
  • Smaller library with not as many "great" hits like NES/SNES? I'm just happy the prices haven't gone up to match NES/SNES prices...makes it more possible to actually complete the library.
  • Because it sucks.
  • I was having this conversation yesterday, and I accept that there are people who don't like the N64 controller, or can't get over the graphics, or past the outdated mechanics of a lot of the early 3D games on the system, or whatever. But, it's my favourite system of all time and the library is so much deeper than people give it credit for. If its not your thing, fine, but I have so many wonderful experiences playing my N64, its a shame so few people bother to play past the classics to give the full library a shot.

I am more than willing to offer suggestions to anyone who is genuinely interested in playing past the Nintendo and Rareware classics. I've got a lot of N64 game time under my belt, and more than happy to share!
