Did the Karate Champ manual ever come with a black and white cover?

So I've seen a few of these now and I wonder if this was a real thing? The cover is black and white but is not a photocopy. Also there is no product code on it as well. A strange variant perhaps?

  • Nope. Not C64.

  • Disk says front side for c64 and backside for apple II. Just stick to the front side....
  • Not sure...

  • Yeah, I've got one. I also have a b/w manual for Rampage as well, both with no code. I don't know how many games Data East did this with, but they are definitely legit. I pick them up when I see them, which is exactly twice in twenty years of collecting. So that's how scarce they are in my neck of the woods. I consider it a rare variant kind of on the same level as the black Rad Racer manual.

I'm surprised NA doesn't have them listed in their database, considering the site is going on 13 years...
  • My thought exactly. I guess they are so rare that no one has added it to the database.

Can we confirm that they actually came with the game new? Perhaps they are a replacement manual you could order?
  • yeah they are real and rare AF. I have a ring king. They came with late revision of the games. Kthrower has a PILE of these.
  • oh an definitely different than black rad racer - black rad racer came with day time screen shot variant, that's it.
