Longest period you've kept buying but not playing?

I've been quite busy with work and family -- so much so, that it's hard to justify spending time playing games. However, in the random free moments while sitting on the toilet at work and cranking out a stubborn turd, or pretending to be listening to my four year old tell me a nonsensical and poorly paced story about his day at preschool, I find moments on my phone to snag a deal or two on ebay.

So, I just realized that over the past 10-12 months I've bought probably 100 (mostly under $20) games, but I haven't played a single one.

I found myself with an evening off, so I downloaded an NES emulator, connected a controller, and started playing ROMs of some of the lesser-known NES titles I've been purchasing.

Holy shit have these games aged poorly. it actually turned me off so much that I stopped buying games the past couple weeks. The idea of playing the games was so much more fun than actually playing them. There really is only like 70 games on the system worth your time, if you value your time at all.

  • I understand not having time because that's where I am at in my life but I usually get in some console during each week. I also haven't been buying much lately but that's more so a change in focus on my collecting.

I'd be curious which games didn't age well? Sometimes the older consoles are my only way to scratch that gaming itch compared to new gen!

    Loving horizon zero dawn tho
  • Over 4 years.
  • Plead the 5th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I was directed to work from home last week while the office is being remodeled, so I have been able to catch up on my backlog which is nice. There was quite a gap in there, about a month or so, where I bought a ton of games and just didn't play them. Glad to be back playing though!
  • Im in the middle of this. Between work, family time, and my son and his baseball team gearing up for the state tournament (practice everyday and im an assistant coach), im going on a month and a half.

EDIT: but 2 weeks ago i was able to go to an all you can play all day Arcade with my son for 4 hours. So even though i didnt buy them i still played. does that count? lol

Get back to work! Playing video games on the company dime? I would never do that!
  • People buy video games to play?
  • Steam sales in the late 2000s were crazy. I bought 100s of games I haven't played up until maybe 2011 when their sales stopped focusing on giant, insanely cheap bundles of like every game a publisher has ever made.

    Damn, beat me to it.

  • I game almost every night even if it's only an hour or so. I rarely go for long without gaming. The longest I can remember not playing any games at all was probably about a month. I've played every game I own. It's a weird concept to me of buying games and not playing them but to each their own.
  • It was over 15 years (I played Breath of the Wild a bit to break the streak) before then was GTA III

I'm glad I don't have this perspective. I've enjoyed a lot of real stinkers on the NES. I don't have near enough time to play my thousands and thousands of games, but every game has it's unique contribution to history, or cool story, or interesting gameplay choices. I've played through Secret Scout, Challenge of the Dragon, Operation Secret Storm and etc. Games like Days of Thunder on Gameboy wow'd me, because it uses the gameboy hardware in a way I've never seen. (Seriously, check it out!)

Anyway, I'm hella busy playing Randomizers these days, so my random gaming is down, but I enjoy every video game I play, even if it's kinda crappy.

  • Never. The best part of this hobby is that it's interactive.

To each their own. I can see the appeal. I have a soft spot for B movies. But for an interactive experience that I am investing in, I just don't see the point in playing something for the schlock factor. It's like going to a mediocre burger place because you hear they have weird buns.

    Like your mom.

  • I still play, but I spend far more time tracking down good buys than being able to play the games. However, I'm hoping to change that with some new ebay strategies and using the game value now collection wish list to make more informed purchases. I have roughly about 200 games I am seeking to buy for the gameboy system in the next 4 years or so.

I decided that I am going to collect about half of the library: I'm excluding all of the sports titles, I am also only collecting the best version of a lot of series games: for example: Alien Vs Predator: the last of his clan, Franken 2, Boxxle 2. Something like that. I'm also trying to exclude a lot of the generic platfomers such as Adventure Island. Anyway, I got my list of 250 out of the 507 games available.
