"I've accidentally repruduced cart herpes just recently in a couple of game boy cart backs, I was trying to get rid of the yellowing so I lef them inside a ziploc bag with peroxide and facing a window for about 3 days, they started bubbling but I managed to push most of them back while they were still soft, I'd imagine water would have the same effect, cart + water inside a ziploc, direct sunlight for 3 days and you should have some bubbling."
and
"peroxide turns into water when exposed to light, thats why they put it in a brown bottle"
#0280, and #0333 are pretty messed up too but don't quite have enough damage I think to be considered "bad" copies. #0333 despite having one of the coolest numbers, has the worst glue bleed/mottling of any cart, and #0280 has some pretty bad water damage that may or may not one day be reversible.
The picture of #0026 i have there is EXTREMELY blurry, but even in that extreme blur you can see that the label's "shine" was somehow ripped off. The only reason I know it's #0026 is because the NintendoAge thread where that picture is found talks about how it's #0026.
That does NOT match my photo of NWC #0240...but there are minor signatures that do match up so luckily it's a legit photo I've had all this time.
Notice under "TM & (C)1990" there's a little damage mark that matches up perfectly with the herpes label.
This thing was in really nice condition before he stored it in "acid free" packing....another reason to get your rarities properly graded guys. Wow.
...you know, plastic can be mended (I'm not endorsing repairing #0328) but cart herpes...unrepairable. This one is only a step above Mario....what happened to you #0240
How would you know if a clear plastic case(or bag) is "acid free" other than taking the manufacturers word for it? Is there a way of testing them?
it doesn't matter. You could store that cart in a cardboard sandwich for 10 years and you'd have a brown label maybe but no visible damage to the plastic.
Heat. Moisture. Not acidity.
Storage next to acidic elements will turn paper brown and brittle over prolonged periods of time. It would not cause that kind of bubbling.
If you are concerned about acidic storage environment for your games (and I wouldn't be), mylar bags would work fine.
Nice to see this turn up! Was trying to make out what the marker on the front label says and it appears to say the titles of the three games on the cart. A little hard to make out but the letters are there for at least Mario, Rad Racer, and Tetris. Pretty neat.
Purely speculative on my part but I'd think 12 to 14k as my best guess. Just a feel on the current market.
For the record though, I'd think it would be a bad buy at that range. Resale would be crap and I wouldn't expect many (any?) realistic offers in the BIN OBO style. Itd have to go to auction to incite real bidding, and most people are hesitant to open auction items where they have 5 figures invested. So if you buy it, be sure you're prepared to keep it.
No way anyone is buying this for $12-14K. In the coin collecting world, this would be classified as a "cull." The only thing it has going for it is that it works. Does someone really need to own an NWC _that_ badly to drop $10K on this?
Considering the pimpled cart sold for $13.5K over a year ago, I don't think it's far fetched to see this one go for $10-12K fairly easily
To be fair though, I think most would consider the pimpled cart's condition leaps and bounds superior to this copy. If I personally were in the market for one, I definitely wouldn't be looking to spend 5 figures on this copy, although I bet there would be a few who would line up to.

It only takes a few to want it to get demand going.
While better condition carts would demand more money, it is still a cart used in a legendary competition. There is an allure to it, and to find as many as possible, no matter how hard time has been on them.
But this one... it's hard. There's no way (I think?) to prove what number it is. The number makes the case on this title. Even if it's a perfect board, perfect shell cut... even if I dropped 10k for this, I wouldn't be sure of it. I'd only drop that cash for a verified numbered NWC personally, since (ostensibly) you can trace the lineage.

I agree with the above, i would buy it if i had a storage unit BOY, but I don't. I am jealous even if it is a crappy condition cart. hopefully you can work out a deal and get it. If i ever have the extra cash to spend I will buy one if it comes up, many years down the road .
There we go. We're at 72 absolutely, positively, no doubts, confirmed copies.
I wonder if there's a way to figure out the # on this one...can you get a SUPER detailed closeup and see if there's some form of ink remaining?
P.S. if only 90 of these were ever made then we're at 80% for absolutely confirmed copies, and 87% for total speculated and rumored copies....we can stop saying there were 90 copies now.

Total Copies of NWC Grey
I had a customer email me 2-3 years ago about a found NES cart.
#297 NWC & and Proto.
I asked for photos of the PCB but it never happened. He seemed honest but not very tech savvy.
Maybe this can go in the "rumored" section of your chart?
I watermarked the image to hopefully prevent scams etc.

Rumored section is literally just a friend saying that a friend has a certain number, and they wont share a picture with it....but that friend of mine is a really reliable source that I have no reason to doubt. But for posterity sake, its marked as rumored until it finally shows up.
A good clean photo is good enough to make its way to the chart, the goal is really just to track what's out there and what isn't. If someone comes along and says "I have #0297 for sale" and posts a picture in any different condition then it will cause both the photo you posted, and the copy that they have into question.
Just to be sure I'll run it through a couple checks to see if was photoshopped at all.
Thanks for the photo
Also, is there any way you can send me a non-watermarked version? I'll mark it as private if you want me to.
There were 2 Chris's in the California Finalist list, and 3 more elsewhere.
Christopher Vu (Oakland, CA)
Chris Tang (Los Angeles, CA) - Cartridge #0183
Chris Dillard (Detroid)
Chris Holt (Indianapolis)
Chris McCormack (Portland)
This is almost definitely one of their cartridges...if it was found in California then I bet it's Christopher Vu's copy. Though, that's just speculation.
Edit: Also, I'm referring to the original post. Not the one you shared with me retrofixes.
Congrats to the finder, and the knowledge that these do still turn up is very heartening to all of us hunters! And if 72 or so are still known to exist and have been found, there must have been far more than "only 90" made- no way that such a high percentage has managed to become confirmed.
Heya guys! I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who buys and resells storage units. He just sent me pics claiming he had uncovered this:
So, did you buy it, or what?
Sorry for the long delay in response guys. Life got real hectic for a minute there, but I'm back now!
Unfortunately he got better offers right away from other interested parties. It was sold at one point for 10K to a guy from Portland, but then I heard someone came over the top and flew down to pick it up before anyone else could possibly offer more. At this point it's long gone. I was surprised it went for so much, but judging from the insane amount of messages I got from people on Facebook and NA asking me to sell it to them or pick it up for them I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, lol.

Poopy. Do you know what the final sold price is?
Unfortunately no. It must have been more than 10K though. My personal guess is 12K-15K range. I can't imagine it going for more than 15K, but who knows.

That's a pretty solid guess. I would have put it at $12K for sure. I'd be interested in knowing if by chance you ever find out what it sold for
Small update: Someone contacted me stating they knew who bought it through Facebook and it was purchased for 10K. I guess the 2nd buyer either didn't follow through or was just a rumor.
