Xbox games with blacked out ESRB ratings?

I picked up a copy of Mafia for the original Xbox via an ebay listing, and the game was sold via a regional Goodwill outlet. The ESRB rating (Mature 17+) on the cover artwork, instruction manual cover and disc artwork has been blacked out with a sharpie or other black marker.

Any idea why this might be? I know some Neo Geo carts shipped over from Asia end up with boobs and butts blacked out by customs, but I don't understand who is jerking off to the ESRB "M" logo.

    Exactly what I thought.
  • That seems like a strong possibility, but it's also... kind of a boring answer. I was hoping for something more exciting. Like, maybe some video rental store was doing it so they could rent more games. But there aren't any traces of rental store stickers or the like.
  • Little Timmy can't read yet but he figured someone started coloring in the white square with black ink and decided to finish it for them.
  • Some thrift stores can't sell T or M games because they don't want to monitor the age of the buyers. It could be the case that the person pricing and moving the games from processing to the sales floor blacked out the rating.
  • Could have just been some bored kid coloring in the white block. I have seen plenty of games and stuff with shapes randomly colored in. or bubble letters filled in

Strangely enough, I speak from experience here.

I let one of my friends borrow my N.W.A tape, and when he returned it the tape liner had the explicit lyrics warning cut off of it.   He explained that he cut that off in case his Mom were to see it.

Not sure why he couldn't have just hidden the insert somewhere instead?   Had I known he was gonna do that shit I would have put the tape in a John Denver case or something.

  • If you dont like the common sense explanation, just make up one of your own lol
  • How exciting could the answer possibly be? It's a boring question.
  • Some Neo Geo games distributed in the Middle East region had offending details and (meaningless to them) rating logos blacked out with black marker pen.
  • Maybe it's the elaborate work of Jon Delano?
