I would imagine against some of you with your full sets that rank into the low hundreds like the N64 or the upper area like the NES unlicensed and all hits, let alone the few who get insane and do it with the Wii or PS1 and PS2 would laugh at it but I do have one, almost, but I will remedy that soon. I have nearly the entire US set of games for the Virtual Boy.
I'm guessing it would be kind of a joke in some peoples minds with that mighty 14 game library, but when you factor in what the latter 4 games of the set go for and the other cheapies are starting to creep up this year too it's going to only get worse if that's a future interest of anyone. Within that set though when I do pop for the last one all but four of them will be complete in box including the not really boxed Mario Tennis with that display only piece. And when it happens I doubt I'll bring it up right off, and I'm not looking to throw pictures around or icon collect either as I'd definitely qualify for a few if I asked. I try and keep stuff mostly low key in passing just mentioning things usually at most in a conversation or showing a friend a picture of flea market or other local finds as that can be fun.
I don't care to be a full set collector but when you're talking barely over a dozen games it's kind of hard not to, especially when the most expensive of the lot I do have and it's one of the most fun on there it was a must.
Does anyone else ever fear talking about what they have? I tend not to brag about sets online, because who wants to paint a target on their head?
**rasing my hand** I thought it was just me
Nope. Not alone there. I don't talk about it for 2 reasons: 1.) nobody cares what I have and don't 2.) those that do that live close by - I don't want any bright idea. FWIW, I know of over a dozen folks within a 3 town radius that have bought off of me here or through my business and it always weirds me out haha
I'm going for full nes (likely minus stadium events). But only because I started in the 90's and got most for dirt cheap. Had I not gotten broke during / after college I woulda been done by now. Instead, I waited until priced skyrocketed before I had disposable income again. Actually almost sold my NES games in 2006ish, but a friend talked me out of it. Glad he did.
NES will be the first, last and only full set I collect. Other systems it's just games I like or think are cool to have.
Ive wanted to collect full sets for all the Nintendo systems. I completed Virtual Boy first but then sold it soon after. That made me question why I was going for them. I got fairly close to the Wii U set and started doing the same thing.
Now I just go for my fave games, great games, or games published by Nintendo.
I think the next stop will be Gamecube (I'm already 1/3 of the way there)....
I set collect because I like the challenge as well as learning about all the games on a given system. That said, I don't set collect to impress others or to have my ego stroked. I do it because it genuinely makes me happy. I don't care if my collections tank in value. I paid for them with the intention of keeping them long term regardless of price increases. I know I am a rarity.
I'm still kinda working on Saturn (70 away), and after that probably grey gameboy (cart)... then I might be done? I dunno. TO be honest my actual game collecting has taken a back seat to all the game-adjacent stuff I've been hunting (internal employee stuff, displays, etc)
Since I guess we are listing what weve done -- So far I've done:
I go back and forth with myself a lot about getting a full set of NES. it's taken me 10 years to get to 215 games. To me, collecting NES has always been something I could see myself doing the rest of my life. I don't actively collect right now, but I am aware that at some point I'll start up again. When I was a kid, I remember telling my dad that someday "I'll buy every Regular Nintendo game in the world". That sentiment hasn't ever really left me. If I don't own every NES game ever released by the time I'm old and feeble I'd be surprised. It's not about money to me, and I have plenty of room and kids that are interested in it so it wont just be trashed when I die.

Awesome! Nice to hear this approach to it.
Also, I just wanted to comment and say we also used to call it the "Regular Nintendo". I wonder if most people did.

I'm still crazy as I ever was. I'm going for full sets of CIB and loose with manuals of NES/SNES/N64 libraries. One for preservation and one for play. I'm also going for a full 2600 set...any condition. Not a lot of people go for it so why the hell not? I know there are several extremely rare games for 2600 that I'll never see but I can still have a goal to collect a full set.
But honestly the NES is tricky with SE. No way in fuck am I going to pay that much for a sports game...let alone two times to actually fully complete my two sets. It's just something I'll never have...I'm fine with that. In my mind it'll be complete without that game.
And while I have bought online (through here or eBay) I am trying to get most of my games locally. Funner to hunt for them.
Now realistically, I know having two full sets of those three libraries is insane, I'm not that far out there that I don't know I'm crazy. Will I actually do it? Probably not. I can see myself getting a full set of N64 but it'll be a mix of CIB and loose. My plan is to collect what I can find to at least have one full set. I'll probably get the loose with manual set done first, then I'll buy duplicates of the CIB games I have so I can get a full loose with manual set. That was always my plan from the start.
In the end its just something to make me happy, keep me going...take my mind off of bigger issues. An escape, just like when I play the games. It's all an escape.
If you’re doing this for preservation then why not go for loose/manny and sealed as opposed to cib? I mean unless you’re doing mint cib this seems like a bit of a waste to me? (Ie collect OK condition cib means you can still access the cart or manual without further visible degradation).
i’m actually doing something very similar: loose cart of my favourite games to play, and sealed version of it for the art and preservation aspect of it. When im done years from now i will have the Ultimate gamer-collector collection on nes snes n64. But im absolutely not going for full sets.

I simply can't afford sealed. Sealed games are easily several hundred vs CIB games...which are cheaper. Not that I'd spend several hundred on a game anyways. I buy stuff at yard sales...
But point is...I'm not going to find sealed stuff at said sales unless it's a very rare occasion...like when I found LoZ on the NES sealed a few years ago. That was a once in a life time sort of thing.
Yes to truely preserve something, you're better off getting it sealed and as mint as possible, but I think there's still some value in preserving just CIB games. Historical value not monitary value.
As time passes I'm realizing I am going for a full set of GBA games. (Started with the rare or harder to get, but as I make space in my apartment, I realize that a full set might eventually be in reach, and have started buying a lot of sealed commons). The set must be of all carts, regardless of condition, but I am seeking the highest quality I can get. (Sealed if possible, but have acquired loose versions as placeholders for some hard to get titles.)
Well, at the moment, I'm still a good ways away from getting my complete GB cartridge set, but I've found that it's rather fun. I intend to finish, but I can tell getting a complete NTSC-US set, with variants is going to be difficult. After that, I'll probably focus on getting a complete cart set of Game Gear games and the N64 has always been desirable. Since I can't let go of the original GB, I'm sure I'll move on to collecting the PAL exclusives and then start looking for large lots of Japanese carts I don't have (might go for a full set but not with much intentionality) and then anything else Game Boy related that's rare that I stumble upon, regardless of region it's from.
I've also found PS1 collecting to be fun but, man, that's just to many games. Smaller games are also easier to manage space-wise, so I might just move on to collecting sets for portable games of various forms.
A few years ago I seemingly wanted to collect nearly everything as a full set. By that I mean focus on one system for six months, get really into it and move onto the next. That was going nowhere so full sets are not achievable, my attention span is admittedly too small. Series are far more achievable.
Major props to those of you who persevere and can piece one together!
When I first started collecting, I was going for a full NES set. Because I wanted to actually play the games, at least a little, that's changed. The NES collection is now the top 10 rares (for the shelf, you know) + top 150 rated + anything from nostalgia land. It keeps the total collection under 200. I'm now going to look for an SNES, 64 and Genesis with Everdrives/Powerpaks so the CRT will be stacked.
Late to the party here, but I'm still going for some fullsets. I've got SMS, SNES, N64, Game Gear and Wii U all completed. Very close on Game Boy, Lynx, 32X, and Sega Saturn. Besides that, I'm still hoping to do Genesis, Gamecube, and Dreamcast. I may also do Game Boy Color but not as interested.
Still plugging along.
Edit: And I'm like 8 away from a complete NES but I'll never have like 6 of those.
Actively working on a full US GBA set. Including the standard NFRs, and GBA Video. It will take me a long time. I'm trying to go for the best condition I can, but will pickup loose copies as placeholders. In the end, I expect it to be a mix of CIB and sealed, as I think it's way too late to collect a full sealed set.

Somewhat trying to get all the 7800 manuals too. Beyond that I've been chopping even more stuff than before.

less that 100 away from full licensed NES, then i want to finish my colecovision set
Heck yeah man get it!
For NES I don't think I've added anything to my collection in years.
