What % of the NES library is worth owning?

I don't mean with regards to money, but playability.

I am at around 350 games, most of which I have an interest in owning/playing. I don't wanna get extra shelves so debating just removing the 10-20 crappy games I own and replacing them with ones I want to play. The thing is, I continue to discover interesting games on the console, so wondering whether I may be nearing the last couple ones or whether you think more than 50% are legitimately good games.

Cheers.

  • Is that what you are worried on Canada Day? Sheesh.
  • Games I could have on that system that I would play multiple times over and think they are absolute classics in my opinion I could probably have NES sitting at 10% of the library.
  • Less than 50%.

    Cheers.

People have different definitions of good and what they want to own. Some like the gameshow games, some don't. If you don't, that's like twenty or thirty games to skip. Same with sports games, strategy games, etc.

  • Guess someone should play through and rank the entire library so we know for sure
  • I'd say ~90%. Once you hit the $200 threshold, they aren't worth owning. Course, if I owned Samson, I probably wouldn't sell it. I just wouldn't pay the going rate.
  • 20% Must Own/Play

    20% Maybe

    60% Chuffa

Once you hit 300-something games, you are going to have a few shelf filler titles in there

Have you seen Chrontendo? The guy basically did this chronologically all the way to 1989 before slowing updates to a crawl. He doesn't seem to like at least 80% of the stuff he played.  the only difference is that he included japan only stuff, which significantly increases the number of games he played.

  • I always thought that the PAL catalogue of games for the NES had a much large percentage of games worth playing/owning compared to the NTSC library. PAL defenitly had a much smaller percentage of shovel ware, just garbage games that aren't worth anything. Things that come to mind are most of the THQ games, much of the worst LJN games (we only got the good ones) and stuff like the Sesame Street games. I think for PAL it is around 70%, and for NTSC it's around 40%.
  • N8 everdrive so which ever games don't work on the everdrive!
  • 50. Games not percent. Honestly, there are some great games, but there are a lot of rehashes and just straight up garbage (e.g. Secret Scout).
  • Do you think the black box games are worth playing? There is 30 right there.

I would say once you hit about 100 you are stretching to add anything REALLY good
  • I have counted just shy of 300 titles on my list. This includes NES, famicom, PAL region and home brews.

My list is mainly US games but titles that are slightly different in another region may be counted twice
  • I often find charm in games that people think are terrible. Rocky and Bullwinkle, Swamp Thing, and Pesterminator come to mind. I have also discovered depth to other games that I thought were boring upon first playing like Solar Jetman, Blue Marlin, and Jaws. So I'd say give some of those "unpopular" games another try and you might find something you like about them.
  • I very much enjoy the whole NES library, so clearly I am biased. I would say 90-95%.
  • 100% get a powerpak asap and play em all- from the mega mens to the hidden gems there are thousands of production hours that are so entertaining. save the princess, build a team of 15s (even pitching), beat the USSR in dodgeball, waste time with rampage, up that ranking in nes open, race through formula one, laugh at the suggestive moves in superspike vball, get all six energy tanks, use both warp whistles and skip to world 9, race trucks or rc's, get those triforce pieces, beat a metal slime, get lost using the airship and select-B, buy a vowel or solve the puzzle, smash a locker, get the mirror shield, save up for dragon feet, defeat your shadow, land on the carrier, don't shoot the food and let the blue warrior live, get stuck in a wall on stage 4, smash barrels, drop pills, blow bubbles, whip zombies, shoot aliens, punch/kick henchmen! Whether is be with the Master Sword or a yo-yo, Diskarmor or Spew Weapon, beat them all.
  • Damn... you've gotten to 350 and are still looking for more?

    Yowza.

I would guess around ~200 are decent and fun playable games... If that?
  • 100 to 125 total NES games worth owning for me. So, that's 15-20%

For me, that total represents my childhood games + games that carry some amount of nostalgia + games that I've enjoyed playing more than once.
  • 150%. Everything, plus the homebrews, weird unlicensed crap out of Spain, plus the Sachen games, plus some repros and hacks for good measure.

I agree with this. I would say 10% of the total library would be a stretch for truly good games. There are a lot of OK games but they're usually just worse versions of other games on the system. I own about 100 games for NES and don't feel like I am missing out on anything and could even ditch a few of those.
  • Tough to quantify. A lot of factors go into trying to answer this, with the biggest one being what types/genres of games you like. Side-scrollers/platformers, RPGs, beat 'em ups, shmups, strategy/puzzle games, arcade/high score games, sports... etc.

Assuming you like (or at least somewhat enjoy) all genres, I'll throw out 50-60%.
  • this guy played and reviewed all the NES games : https://questicle.net/

In terms of playability 10-15% of the library is probably where it's at.

I read that entire thing.  He barely played most of the games, and his choices for the "best" of the library leave a lot to be desired

Meh. It's a point of reference. I actually dig his top games, it's not exactly the usual suspects that made it in and that's refreshing. It's cool that he went into this semi-blind and gave lesser ratings to games he personnally didn't feel were worth mastering. I can dig that. A steep learning curve can, and often should, and often will be a deterrent to one's enjoyment of a particular game.

He gave Samson an A+, at least that’s accurate

  • Hmmm... so is there a running list of people's favorite games? I know the NES has some games that hold up well even today -- SMB3, Castlevania III, Duck Tales, Adventures of Lolo, etc... but I'm more interested in the obscure titles that are hidden gems.

we snes collectors dont deserve you

  • Maybe 5 or 6%? I don't think there are more than 40 great games on the NES.
  • Some thoughts in %

    NES - about 15%

SNES - about 30% (maybe even higher)

    N64 - about 5%

GameBoy is 100% though, it's the GOAT.
