Was the T. Rex always the most popular Dinosaur?

For whatever reason some friends and I were on the topic of dinosaurs and we were wondering if the T. Rex was always the most popular dinosaur. Like did Jurassic Park make it the most popular or did they give it the cool scenes because it was already the most popular?
