First print Sonic 1 Genesis price spike

Has anybody noticed the price increase on the CIB non "Not for Resale" versions of Sonic 1 on Genesis? Currently there are a few high sold listings and some current ones. Is this a result of the frenzy over 1st print games like Super Mario Bros? Is this really as uncommon as people think? I suppose it is similar to the uncommon CIB Super Mario World. Just checked my CIB Sonic 1 and it is the 1st print retail but with a NFR cart.. DOH! Must have gotten swapped over the years. I'll bet the price will drop back down after this hype and people realize it's not that uncommon. But I could be wrong

First print hype is very much a thing now since the new money joined in on the fun! Who knows new money might buy up all of them or they waste their money who knows.

  • I had heard that this buyout was coming. I had been looking locally for it since and you realize how few are the original non nfr carts.
  • Time to hit up the local brick and mortar with the uninformed owner who doesn't even like video games lol!

I've pulled a grey turok ($7) and a five screw bayou billy ($5) let's see how many non nfr Sonics we might find for $3- $5 wwwwwaaaaaa
  • Someone needs to check a spike in Gangstas Paradise priced too.
  • Some Sonic 1 carts have a NOT FOR RESALE that you can peel off.

The mint CIB Sonic 1 I have kept for my collection is one I never really see people bring up, but it has a 1992 copyright on the back and comes with a 'Welcome to the Next Level' flyer with Tails on the front
  • The one to look out for is the Sonic the Hedgehog ESRB varient (CIB). One sold for $230 last week. Here's our friend, Supergamboy's auction running until tomorrow evening:

I've been ripped off on this variant multiple times over the years where the seller ended up sending the non-ESRB variant, or an auction where there were "two available" and the photo shows one ESRB and one non and I magically get sent the non one. But of course you can't specifically ask for the ESRB one or you will tip the seller off that it is worth something.

  • He's finally getting the white glove treatment! yuk yuk

Yeah that one is really interesting. It comes in the plastic hard case. But I thought they switched to the sliding cardboard in 94 or 95. Another hard to find one to look for is the cardboard Sonic 2 box. But that might be more well known.

Lol yep. Though I don't think loose carts are rising in price. Maybe only boxed ones.
  • Hey man please don't talk about Super Mario World CIB. I'm still looking for a copy!
  • No one trying to sell Sonic for $300 paid over $10 for their copy, nor ever will. Except that one guy on HA who paid $1200 for a CIB Sonic 1 lol
  • LOL what? Nooo, I get these in all the time. Granted, they aren't as common as NFR, but they aren't rare or anything.

I guess it's time to sell my copies off, eh? Just don't tell these yahoos wanting 3 digits about gray Zelda, OMG.

Good luck with that. I think the price of this game is gonig to skyrocket even though it's already expensive. I could see nice copies of this game going for well over $1k sooner rather than later if it hasn't already happened.

    Ssssshhhhhut uuuuupppp.

  • Sealed SMW are gonna be 5 figures in no time and the CIB will shoot up bigtime.
  • Also, fwiw, I did some research the other day at found THIRTEEN Sonic 1 variants lol. I might put together a reference guide for WATA if I can find the time...

I won't pretend to know which black label came first (there are 3 contenders), but I have a pretty good feel of which are harder to find, including among the NFRs (of which I found seven variants). Some only had one copy on Ebay.

The back of the box will give it away. These, I believe, are the “Made in Taiwan” versions. Only NFR versions have that language on the back.

So just curious would a prototype for smw get attention or not get a second look like most prototypes?

I saw that and was like "wtf..."

I have so many Sonic NFRS's that I could never offload....
  • I only have the crappy PAL version of Sonic 1 but for some reason I am still satisfied...

  • A well listed 7 day open auction closed at $46 yesterday. Another at $56 the day before. That's from an open auction peak of $455 only TWO WEEKS ago, with several $200-$300 sales along the way. Of course the BINs are out in full force in the $200 range now.

Sorry for those buyers but speculative buying and fear of missing out causes irrational price movements. This one isn't rare and the overpaying is already in the dust.
  • I think its hard for comic guys to wrap their head around the rarity difference between a cib sonic and a sealed one. They are just miles... 1000's of miles (?)... apart.
