This thread is really taking off! I'll have to post my collection soon. By the way, I collect comedy and outsider music, as well as the following artists:
Rush
Zappa
Todd Rundgren
The Residents
R. Stevie Moore
Oingo Boingo
Firesign Theatre
Dr. Demento
Sparks
I've been rebuilding the collection for quite awhile. I'm always interested in discussing music and picking up these types of records. Going local is becoming increasingly difficult, unfortunately.
Didn't realize how hard this Veruca Salt album was going to be to get. But I finally knocked it off my want list. Here it is along with my new Orbit U-Turn turntable.
I'm not a collector by any means but when I found these in a junk store with 100s of others and for a excellent price I wasn't leaving them. Allegedly there were even more in a warehouse near by but unfortunately a collector scooped everything up after I found these.
How about this one. Hand made Dark Castle discography set. I actually helped them make it by supplying their original demo which they no longer had copies of. Pretty cool.
Audiophiles are easily my least favorite -phile. You can play the same record on those things hundreds of times, play them backwards, the records are still perfectly fine, and if they aren't, I hardly care one bit. I've never experienced a skipping record

While kind of true there is a lot of factors that can decrease the life of it, every time you play a record it is microscopically wearing it down, this is why sometimes you will have records that have absolutely no wear visually but has a lot of static noise...It's because someone played it a lot with a worn stylus and it's permanently damaged.
Do you know how old the stylus is? Do you have a tool for measuring tracking force? Is the tone arm balanced?
There is a specification for how much tracking weight that the cardridge uses to properly sit in the record grooves (Every one is different).
None of these factors would contribute to a "skipping" record...Records skip due to warping and or deep scratches in the grooves that causes the needle to pop out.
I don't know if you are buying these new or not but I know how expensive they can get and it's best to take the proper precautions and get yourself a nice player.
Yeah I've been collecting and playing records for 10 years and I've been through a few players at this point, I had a better one but it got broken in a fight. I used to try to uphold the "higher standards" that seem to come with collecting vinyl, but now I'm at the point where I just don't personally notice the difference between the players so I just get cheap ones. The speakers I have hooked up to the record player are easily more expensive than the player itself haha. I just find that "degredation" stuff to be so overblown and miniscule for me personally. The sleeves, inner papers, shrinkwrap and stickers I am oddly way more strict about than the condition of the record itself. I mean, just look at The Beatles Butcher Album, nobody gives a shit what condition the record is in or even if it comes with the record, people just flock over the original cover. I came into record collecting expecting them to sound like skippy shit after a few years because that's what I was always told growing up, but I've hardly ever come across a record that sounded like someone way pouring sand on it, only two or three have I ever thought "this sounds pretty bad"
Records without sleeves....You trying to make me go crazy dude?
Honestly I'll hardly ever buy a used LP anymore if it doesn't still have the shrinkwrap intact, and I'm pretty meticulous about opening new ones. 45s I can be hit or miss, I certainly have a few that are just sitting naked in a stack, and then others I treat like rare treasures

I hardly ever buy new but I recently bought the Capital Vault version of Megadeth's Rust in Piece because it's the original recording and not a reissue/remaster.
Was cutting the shrink open and cut riiiiiiiiiight into the fuckin inner sleever, hardly but still.
First screw up I've had so far....I'll post a picture of my setup when I get home from work.

I hope that’s not your record player, if it is buy a new one, that’s not doing you any favors
I wasn't going to be the one to say it but yeah, you are probably damaging grooves every time you play something through that.
