Homebrew NES game

I've been wanting to get into the homebrew scene for a while, but my creative genius is limited.  It seems like everyone does side scrolling games, or one-screen mini games.

I've thought about maybe doing an adventure game like Kings Quest V.  I would really like to get some input.  What would YOU like to see in a new/original NES game.  If I can find enough time to dedicate to the project, I'd like to put something really good together.

I will say that this probably won't be my first effort as I am still just learning to program for the NES, however, a large project like this will take a lot of planning/resources and I'd like to start getting organized asap.

  • Pitfalls of a "3D Animated Adventure Game"

Big one is working with plain english in an interactive RPG. KQ5 adapted it OK without the keyboard but it's still a lot of work.

But if you do a point-n-click style like Kemco/Seika it would be a lot easier on you. I'd play either though image
  • Maybe a prequel to a game that was popular long after the NES's production stopped. The only one that comes to mind would be a Crash Bandicoot prequel.
  • d pad hero, like guitar hero but for the nes

  • Full House Tournament Fighter

There is no other choice, you must do this.
  • Something like rampart maybe? I love that game. Wouldnt know how to change it up though.

  • I really want some sort of Wizard of Oz game. But I plan on making one myself sometime down the line. image
  • If you do a PC-style adventure game, take a page from the "Sword of Hope" series on the Gameboy. The addition of strong RPG elements really made those games stand out and improved the replay value of an otherwise one-trick-pony genre.

yeah, I thought of that last week

looks like a bunch of people already thought of it before me.
Would be sweet if it came in cart form
  • Point-N-Click adventures are always fun, but you're going to need a fucking graphical genius to pull it off. Every little screen has to be like a work of art.
  • pee wees playhouse game!

I like this idea, maybe not Crash bandicoot (or something else that will get me sued).

I've never played it, but I'm pretty sure it was ported to the NES.

I've always loved the sierra/lucasarts adventure games. It took teams of people to make those games, and I'm one little person with limited time. I would probably have to get additional help with music/graphics as it would be quite challenging to make it look good. No one likes boring looking games.
  • as I have stated before, Powerpad RPG is the way to go

I'm going to have to second this idea.
  • I really like the idea of a new point-n-clicker in the Kemko-Seika style.
  • I'll have to check out the kemko-seika games a little closer. But, I just had a brainwave (after watching a few kemko-seika vids on youtube). I'm sure just about everyone has played the "stuck in a room" flash games. Something like that could be cool. It would also be a lot easier for a first game. I know the replay value is a little low, but maybe add a timer/highscore table. You could put a series of rooms/situations which continue the story on the same cart. Really, the possibilities are endless.
  • I had a nice idea a few years back of doing a time-traveling RPG where, at certain points of the game, your decisions would radically alter the rest of the game. There were two of these points, leading to four complete scenarios. The length of the game was meant to be rather short (six to twelve hours per scenario, maybe) and there would have been a "New Game+" mode so that all of the branching paths could be seen (along with some other multilpe play through secrets, hehe).

One of the ideas I had was to have three separate musicians cover each time peroid in the game with a different style; so the present era would have had an upbeat, platform style soundtrack, the past era would have had a more classical style soundtrack and the future would have had an electronica style soundtrack (think European NES chiptune style).

I have PAGES of shit written down on this somewhere still and I'd love to attempt it bring it to life some time down the road as maybe as a Windows/Xbox Indie game.. but in my heart it will always be an NES game. I just, I just got destroyed trying to learn assembler.
  • ^^^ Sounds like a great candidate for release as flash game on Kongregate.

They have quite a few epic-length RPG's on the site, so it would fit right in.

Also, the length of the game would guarantee a lot of return-play clickthrough (making it more likely you'll get decently compensated for the effort)

If you ever needed an artist for something like this then you would have my pen. image

  • Hey Leroy, you live by someone who codes for NES! image

You told me you were already working on an RPG! But hey, if you really like the idea we should definitely grab a bite or a beer sometime soon and talk about it, it'd be fun to work on it (or something similar, to be honest).

And I've already got my and pretty deep into doing chip music.

I mean, ya know, these could be the first pieces to a loverly puzzle.
  • i would love to see something like the original legend of Zelda, my friends and i would play for hours and trade tips as to what we found, i don't believe Nintendo ever put out a game like the original.

I agree with the above but............ I am a horror fan and would love to see something horror and gore themed like the Splatterhouse series on the NES, I think that would be cool.

  • theres one like this ,go to "homebrew" to see my wishes & thoughts
