What was the first battery backed game?

I know that they say Zelda is the first game to feature battery backed save feature, but are there any games that did this before Zelda? Surely there HAS to be some game for some console that did this before Zelda, right?

  • Well the "game" Family BASIC for the Famicom is battery-backed, and as far as I know was released in June 1984, much earlier than Zelda. However it didn't use a standard button cell battery, but instead 2 - AA's.
  • Im no expert, but from my knowledge zelda was the first game to use a battery backed save feature.

  • Many arcade games have a battery backup for the high scores.
  • The Game & Watch's held their high score with battery power - Earliest release was Ball on the 28th of April 1980.
