Did I make a huge mistake today?? NTSC SE Manual

I have a job in sales so I have time on my hands during the day.  Today I went to a small game shop about an hour from where I live.  It is one of those places where everything is way expensive, $15 SMB/DH, etc.  Anyway, I was looking at some items in the display case when I came across a Stadium Events Manual.  The problem is the cover looks like someone used it as a coster.  There are rings from a coffee cup and stains.  It looks like it is complete but some of the pages inside have coffee stains and that wave look from being wet.  I know how rare this manual is but the guy wants $300 for it in this poor condition and will not take less.   I left it, did I just make a huge mistake?  I am tempted to go back and get it but $300 seems steep?

  • Yes, you made a mistake. I would go back asap and pick it up. You may never see another one that cheap for a long time. Good or bad condition on ebay is going to hit higher than $500. Maybe you can clean it up a little???

If anything, you can buy it and resell it to someone here on the boards. I guarantee most will not care what shape it's in as long as it's all there.
  • I would go back and offer him 250$ and see if he takes it.

But I think king neptune is right, even in that condition,I`m sure a member here would be very interested in it.
  • I would prob go buy it as well. Even in bad shape that is an impossible manual to find. Plus you could prob sell it for me

  • i know i would give you atleast $400 for it and I dont even own the game
  • I think we all know who would make a very generous offer for this.image
  • I think you should quit reading this thread and get back there and buy it!!! image

$300 for an SE manual in any condition (as long as it's at least complete) is a steal.
  • Really Jordan?! image

  • When you go back, ask him where he got it. This is a manual you just don't find in the wild very often image

congrats on your new SE manual image
  • Its amazing how this hobby differs from others. In most hobbies an item which sells for $800-$1000 in mint shape is worth $100 or less in condition. If things do become condition sensitive will the highcondition items rise or the low condition items fall or both?

its just reflective of a young hobby. Used to be this way in the other hobbies too... that's changed in a hurry as you found out with your $5,000 Iron Man 1 sale, no? image You can still buy copies for $50 or less in other conditions as I'm sure you know.

To answer your question I would say both.
  • maybe its the manual that goes with bravehearts cart, the one found in Montreal. Thats only like 5 hours from here, seriously how many peices of an SE could possibly be around here?

p.s - i'd be more than happy to go pick it up if you decide to pass.

Also, that being said... consider a NES zelda.. you could buy a cart for $5, a CIB for $25, and sealed mint for $500. That's actually a pretty good spread. Its strange in that the spread is much higher for some games than others. But I think that will change.
  • I would make sure I gave it a good look over before shelling out any money for it. but if its the real deal i would grab it.
  • Please go tomorrow and get it or I will take a plane down there and pick it up
  • hmmm ehh tough one to decide, prolly still a good deal at $300.00 but man it would so bug me to have the rarest nes manual in crappy shape lol. But yea you should pick it up sell it to someone on here who really needs it, i need one for my cart, but would rather wait forever to find a nice one.
  • Well I'm sold.  I'll be there tomorrow morning.  Pics to follow.
  • Smart move cecilbug. I'm telling you, if you don't want to keep it, I'm sure there are several here that would offer more than $300. Heck, I know most probably already have. lol

  • Wow - I'd probably pay $300 a SE manual in that condition, although not much more. On a sidenote, what kind of a game shop owner would put a SE manual for sale in his shop? 99% of the people who see it wont even know what the hell it is.

Exactly, I'd lowball the guy. Or wait a week and go back.

You don't wait a week when you see something like that. Another person in the 1% might come along.

I know what you mean. Coffee rings on cover and multiple pages and moisture waves throughout? I think paying $1k or whatever for a nice one is the better "deal" (for the reasons in buyatari's post) but I guess you take what you can get with this title.

As for the game shop owner, I think sometimes they like to have flashy items in their store to just make the inventory look a little better. But I agree with you.
  • What a disapointment.  When I told the guy I was there to buy the manual he nearly fell off his chair.  He then told me that it was just a Athletic World manual that he changed the cover on.  He uses it as a coster and thought it would freak people out who knew what it was. He said he never expected anyone to want to buy it.  What a let down and waste of a day.
  • Well... it made me laugh... so not a TOTAL waste of a day!

That sucks! But, probably better that he admitted it up front, rather than you buy it and find out the hard way!
  • I would be pretty pissed....what a waste of time and gas image

Exactly how did he change the cover on it? Did he use a PAL cover or something?

Anyways, sorry he wasted your time.

I'd guess he did just want to have a flashy item in his store, lol.
  • What a turd. Sorry image
  • What of piece of crap I would be so pissed if I were you. He told you 300.00 then you go down there and he lied to you what kind of business is he running?
  • That's BS. Sorry dude. image You should have demanded something for your time and effort.
  • I was so pissed I didn't stick around to find out how he did it.  A big find down the tubes.  Should have know better.  What are the odds.
