Those nutty Brits and their ninjas

We all know that in Europe, there was a backlash regarding the use of the word "ninja" in their games, (ie. Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles) so why is it that Joe and Mac was co titled Caveman Ninja? And for those interestd, heres a link for the auction..
Caveman Ninja
Did Joe and Mac even have anything to do with ninjas? (i havent yet played it)

  • I already knew this, but always wondered why.  Why didn't they use the word ninja in European NES games?

Some crazy person in the censorship office must have thought the word ninja would warp childrens minds. The stupid thing with Turtles is that all the cartoons, toys and games were called "hero" but the movie was still called "ninja", so as 8 years old kids at the time we called them Ninja Turtles anyway.

The Caveman Ninja thing shows how ridiculous the rule was. Even more funny is Ninja Gaiden, which was changed to Shadow Warriors but still had Ninja Gaiden written under the title on the box, making the name change totally pointless. Take a look:

  • There are plenty of European SMS games with Ninja in the title, must just be Nintendo's European policy which always has been a load of bull at the best of times
  • I always liked how Bad Dudes kept the full arcade title in Europe and was released as "Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja."  I figured that this was because someone said "this game is horrible...we might as well just stick Ninja in the title.  Maybe there will be some controversy and we'll get people to buy it because of that!"
