  • A majority of my collection was bought for less than $3 a cart. alot at game stores and at flea markets. Gets me out and walking the never ending rows providing a good walk. Pretty cheap exercise if you ask me. I have made some great scores in the wild and have sold the games i already had or didnt want for some decent profit. Just a little ammo. Also you could note that over the last 10 years my NES games have done better than almost every other investment Ive made.
  • you can definitely make money by reselling games. that might interest her image
  • So here's the deal. Putting money into collectibles like her Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments or her Boyds Bears, or anything purchased retail, is a losing prospect.

All the stuff you stand to buy in retro gaming is at used-market-price if you shop right. If you can prove to her that you're not overpaying, and are in fact getting good deals on stuff, then you can take baby step #1 -- that you're not paying a markup and lining someone else's pockets.

So we've decided you're not getting taken advantage of, that's a big step. Now for step #2 -- is it a waste of money? Well if you're paying at or below market value for an item with a reasonably stable demand and supply, it's reasonable to assume that next year, those values won't have changed much. So if you, god forbid, get sick of the hobby next year, you can use the same market and make back the money you put in, 1:1 or better.

If you're reasonably able to get your money back, it's not a waste, it's breakeven or better when you cash out. If you don't and you keep them for a longer period of time, you become vulnerable to long-term market forces, but that's a different discussion.

Point is, the same place you buy them from, you sell them in, and with the pool of knowledge you have here, you're armed well for the fight.

Now there's a problem with the time-wasting thing ... image But if it's fun for you, the argument is "Hey, what you don't want me to have my happy fun time?"

Just tell her everything is a waste of time and money. Cause it is. Enjoy life, cause no matter what you do with it, you'll die eventually. All time and money invested is eventually lost.

  • It's not a waste of money. Like Dan said, it's an investment. But it's more than just an investment, it's something you love, it's a passion. Parents are supposed to encourage passions, and luckily I've been blessed with some who understand that. But not only that, the games themselves are fun, so it's not just the collecting, it's the playing as well. And I'm sure you're selling to, so it's sort of a side-business as well. The list of benefits and positives to collecting goes on and on...
  • Parents should be so happy to have kids who resell video games instead of reselling drugs...
  • It took awhile for my girfriend to understand. But after finding a game she enjoyed (Ufouria)She was cool with it. Oh and finding that Magical Chase last year didn't hurt. image
  • Just tell her it's NES games or drugs. Her choice.
  • ^Or both, just looking at your avatar image ?
  • Yes... but you don't tell her that. image
  • So you encourage a kid to lie to his mother ? Do you have any morality image ?
  • Not a lie, just an omission of the truth.
  • Ahah, remember me of a song, don't remember which band, but that was something like "I don't need to tell the truth, but I never lie". I always thought it sounded great.

omission of the truth is a lie ^^
  • It may be a waste of time and money for her, because she doesnt enjoy video games. It up to you what you like to do for fun, not her. Im sure she has activities she likes.. even as simple as watching tv. Would she consider it a waste of time and money to buy a new tv if the old one broke? Passing time is passing time, everyone has different likes and dislikes. It's kind of rude to tell someone their like is just a waste.

Omitting the truth, is just with holding truthful information (A grand
tactic image ). Lying is giving information that is not the truth.

Tell my mom that, I make a B on my report card she blames it on video games image
  • Right Tim, that's what we have the fifth amendment for. Although it works better in courtrooms, than with mom or dad image

Omission of the truth is a type of lie, why do you think when they swear you into court they make you say. " I promise to tell the truth...The WHOLE truth, and nothing but the truth."

  • Simply put, it's a hobby. I'm sure your mom has one, too. You can tell her it's also a good investment, as NES games will inevitably be worth far more in the future.

Since my dad is into classic cars, we see more eye-to-eye on this...

My mom once asked me(in a negative way) what I'd be doing if I didn't sell video games for a living. I told her I'd be doing coke, but I made sure I said it in a totally dead serious voice/look.

    She never asked again.

  • Unless your doing something academic mums think everything you do is a waste of time and money. Tell her you could be doing drugs or buying dirty magazines instead so she should be grateful. If she is a die-hard Christian you could also tell her collecting NES games is a masculine past time which subsides any homosexual tendencies you may or may not have which should shut her up.
  • I'd tell her that NES games won't lose their purchase value, and in fact, get more expensive, the more time passes. There are some news articles about NES collectionism, show her some people can make money out of it.
  • She will understand when you purchase SE for $2.99 and sell it for $1700. That would make her happy.
  • this is my true story. over a few summers ago i was seriously depressed. this is when i started collecting video games. i would go to the gaming store once a week with like 10 dollars and buy like 2 or 3 games. this would keep my mind occupied. i would buy pretty much any game in the store as long as it was cheap. throughout the summer thats like all i did and now im not depressed anymore.

in conclusion, video games actually saved my life. it was a cheap habit and can make you extremely happy.
  • As long as you earned the money yourself she has no right to complain.
