NES Asian - Volly Ball ( It is a Legit cart)

There are many of you out there who simply thought that this cart is a fake due to the spelling error. I already spoke to Dain about this cart existence in which i don't think he believe me.

After searching this damn cart for months, finally i hit the jackpot. Well managed to get the box but the top part is badly damaged. This is the only Asian cart that has a different spelling compared to the rest of the NES regions.

So Dain, can you kindly add that game on the N.A asian list. I know there are more Asian games that are missing and need to be updated.

  • I swear that I saw this cart on NA before. I'm positive that I've seen it before, I'm just not sure if it was here or not...

Excellent find. I do love me some HK/Asian action (yes, you read that correctly).

  • Nice game, but the Asian Version isn't the only one with the spelling error image

It's spelled the same way on the European smallbox games (see EEC version in the DB).
  • Great Find Man

You sure about this Pieter?  I have both the no code with vertical manual on left and the EEC coded with horizontal manual on right and they are both spelled right and there is no -1 or anything on them to signify a correction was made?

  • Ohhhh, that's what I get for being up so late image

I didn't notice that at all, thought the spelling error was the space between Volley & Ball...oops!  Thanks for pointing it out!  That's a pretty cool spelling error!!  Definitely not on any European smallbox games as far as I know image
  • strange...but the misspell looks pretty damn legit to me.
  • It's funny that they spelled it wrong when you can read on the back description that they spell Volley Ball right in there but yet wrong in the title?
  • lol! mispels are funny image
  • Btw, it might be worth opening the cart to verify it 100% prior to adding it to the database, because it may be like the smallbox Asian Version Super Mario Bros. "II" that was found a while back (also with box), which turned out to be a bootleg (at least that was the consensus IIRC based on the PCB).

Speedy, I have all 4 variations of the Asian SMB CIB and I have that SMB II CB.  Looking at the PCB it's certainly different than all 4 variations I have of SMB Asian version but looking at the label and the box it sure as heck looks legit to me?

  • bet braveheart is the only person to have a NWC variant

Impressive man!!  That's a lot of Asian SMB variants...makes me wonder if they also have a large-box variant (like the Tetris one)..

I couldn't agree more that the SMB II looks legit on the outside, but there's a few things that point to it being a pirate:

    1.  Bootleg-looking non-Nintendo board
    2.  Asian Version games are PAL, the SMB II appears to be NTSC (default for bootlegs) according to what Steven said in the other thread (status bar scrolling in modded NES; not playable in PAL NES)
    3.  Box has screenshots of SMB 1 on the back of the box, rather than SMB 2j (also, at least two boxed copies have shown up as far as I know and both without a manual).

Are there any slight differences in quality or maybe printing artifacts on the box or label?

  • ..I have the SMB II box - has the II coloured in (as the contents was a SMB Spanish Version). So there's a few boxes out there.

    Congrats on the find Dante!

That SMB II is definitely a boot for two reason:
    -  The PCB doesn't appear to be a Nintendo PCB.
    -  Those are EPROMs.  No way would an official board use EPROMs like that.

If you flip the PCB over you can probably see that it was hand soldered.

    Definitely Pirate stuff.  ARRRRRRRRRR!

Yes!  I knew I remembered seeing it.  Good eye and once again, congrats!

  • Pieter I bought the SMB II from Stephen so I guess that means 1 is out there plus the box samhead says he has?

There's one more boxed copy...not sure who owns it though.  I've got a pic of it (clearly different damage than yours on cart & box) that came from eBay...I'm pretty sure I saved it from an auction after someone posted it in a finds thread somewhere.
  • I can track down SMB II loose cart but depending on the offer. I know of someone in Asia that is holding on to it tightly.
