It really depends on the condition of the cardboard box and the type of packing tape. I always pull it off at a 180 degree angle (and very slowly) to avoid tearing the box.
Like Speedy says it depends on the type of packing tape. But I must say the hair dryer method is working very good up to 80%, until now I got not to much games in my hands were it didnt worked.
I used a hair dryer on the hottest method to get that f-ing packing tape off of the SE. It came off clean. Only left a little discoloration where the tape used to be. Just slow, even, and keep it hot.

Must have been the most nervous time of your life!
Like a band-aid, just grab and yank as hard as you can.
j/k all good tips here so far, exactly how I do it with labels, tape, anything. One additional, if you're having trouble finding and edge to grab and peel for whatever reason, gently bisect the tape with an X-acto knife (carefully) and you'll get nice clean corners to grab and peel up from. This is esp good for aged, brittle tape that is frayed at the ends, or tape that goes right to the edge of a box so you can't get a good hold on the end of it.
It came off my Power Pad box no sweat the thing looks as good as new.
The big box Gyromite was a nightmare. The tape was old. Really old. Tried the hairdryer method until the life was burned out of my hands, yet it still began to pick up the label in some spots.
Then, out of a last resort, I picked away at it with my X-acto knife. This worked. Kinda. I picked away a whole corner, but after doing it so long, I was getting careless, and doing more harm than good. That's when I threw in the towel.
It's still a beauty, but that tape will just drive me nuts until the end of time.
The only tape I've ever taken off was off a Pro Sport Hockey box, and it took me about 30 minutes with a hair dryer. Luckily it was successful, but I couldn't see doing it any other way than with a hair dryer or some form of heat.

I'd love to see this in my house.
Me too.
