opening famicom carts

Has anyone here come up with a reliable way / tool to open famicom carts without breaking them?

  • None that I have ever seen or heard of. I have never found any good way to open them without them breaking.

  • Darndit fooey crazy glue it is I guess...
  • nope. wedge a thin screwdriver, wedge a bigger screwdriver, crack the side, repeat on other side.
  • That is pretty much my current process, but the little plastic clips always end up breaking off on the first side
  • Would a "case cracker" work? It's a wedge-looking tool meant for opening laptop plastics without breaking the clips.

thats a good idea. We should try that.
  • hmm.. Where does one get one? I tried looking it up and got nothin!
  • Any computer repair-type stores nearby? I got mine for free eons ago from Toshiba when I was a certified Toshiba tech. It may also be called a case separator. I'll look around and see if I can find an Amazon link to one.
  • I use a quik-clamp and a flathead. I posted some instructions over at nesdev a while back, you can see here: http://nesdev.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=4652
  • Thanks BootGod, I will give that a try.. Don't know why but I couldn't find that post when I searched on nesdev image
  • Funny, when I went to nesdev to try and find you the post, I was having trouble finding it too image But yeah, Namcot type carts are evil, but other most open quite easily. In fact I've come to find it to be easier and quicker opening and closing FC carts than NES carts ever were!
  • Hey BootGod, I have finally gotten around to following your advice, and I have been quite successful with this technique on most games. Thanks a lot for the advice!
  • I open Famicom carts by sliding a small screw driver in the 2 holes on top and popping the seal, then grasping on the port area and ripping it apart. I have successfully opened 6 Famicom carts this way without busting them but have also broke 4.

So I am not so sure, its a 60% success rate.
  • why on earth did they make them so you cant open them
  • tacolinowest, because they were worried about piracy.
  • I have a thin pair of needle nose pliers that I use.
