Need help with getting a PS1 disc to work

I recently got an original PS1 again (model number is 9001), and although the lid is hard to close (you have to slam it), it still works. However, it took a few tries to get it to read Jedi Power Battles, and it won't read PS-X-Change V2 at all. The disc spins, then it just says "Insert a Playstation CD-ROM" and the disc eventually stops spinning. No matter how many times I try, it just stops. I tried cleaning it off with water and a cloth, but it did no good. This disc has been confirmed to not work on any PS2 consoles, too.

I would just get Breaker Pro, but I can't find the NTSC version *anywhere* that's not Modchip Outlet, Modchip Store, or something with the word "Mod" in it. I don't really trust sites like those. It's extremely hard to find that and PS-X-Change, so I'm really out of options unless this can be fixed somehow. image

  • if your problem is only with that disc, you can try repairing it with a "disc doctor", or whatever it's called... to polish the surface, getting rid of scratches.
  • Yeah, I should mention that scratches are all over it on the bottom. However, the console itself took a bit to read Jedi Power Battles, so I'm not sure if the disc is the only problem.

And if someone knows of/can find a trustworthy site to get Breaker Pro from, that'd be awesome. image Ebay doesn't have any, unfortunately.
  • I just looked it up and apparently you need to place a spring on some button with the disc tray open. That might explain why it's not working, but what's the point of the spring? And is there anything you can use as a substitute?
  • does your ps1 play or reads any other discs ?

The spring is so that you can open the lid without the system stopping. Theres a little button that the lid presses down normally so the system knows if its open or closed. The spring keeps this button always pressed, so the system thinks the lid is always closed, even when the system is open, allowing you to swap discs w/ your boot loader or w/e it is your up to

Jedi Power Battles is all I've tried, and it read that.

Herbalist: Thanks. In that case, I don't think that has anything to do with the disc not being read, but I could be wrong.
  • Maybe the lid is no longer pressing that button enough. That happened to an old cd player of mine, I had to press down the lid for it to recognize the disc, if I let it closed with no pressure from my hand, it wouldn't load.
  • Do you think it would have the same effect as reading it normally if I held the button down with my finger? Obviously, this would just be a test.
  • I suppose so. I don't think the PS1 can tell the difference between your finger and the lid image.

You should also try putting music cd's, and if possible, other games (besides Jedi Power Battles).
  • try a cd or any other disc and see if the other ones load faster. If they do than the problem is your disc. You can also try cleaning the laser and see if that helps.
  • I tried another game (and tried holding the button down with my finger) and it didn't work. I'm starting to think it's the system and not any of the discs.
  • What a pity. I hope you find a replacement!
  • Hopefully I do. Thanks for the help!
