Speedruns!

I was inspired by the worldchampion Frezy_man whom I saw play through games pretty fast. So I started to do some speedruns myself. I hope we all here at NA could post our best cleartimes in NES games. Here's mine:

    Using warps, of course...

I forget how long it takes me to run through the Legend of Zelda, but I'll run through it today and see what i can do.
  • Marble Madness: 4 min 20 sec (approx)
  • I have two runs on SDA: I've also done a Twisted Metal 2 run which was rejected (just over 22 minutes) and a Three Stooges run (4:40) which I've yet to submit.

very much of course. i basically followed the well known emulator assisted speed run as much as humanly possible. took me a few weeks to get pretty quick with it.
  • I beat SMB in 6 min 20 secs on the NWC cart the 1st time I tried
  • You crazy Swedes image I used to speedrun Goldeneye and Perfect Dark religiously on N64, then a couple of Swedish guys joined the league and destroyed a bunch of times. Then there was a lot of back and forth over the decade that I haven't kept up with, but I believe a guy named Bryan Bosshardt (USA) holds most of the WRs now, though I haven't checked em in awhile.

The most impressive NES speedrun that I saw was Ghost N Goblins in like 15-20 minutes, it's been awhile. That includes both quests of course.

And scaryice, I only watched the first level of your Twisted video but it looked pretty good to me! I actually think Thumper is the best suited vehicle for speedrunning that game, as his armor is above average and his special is the strongest in the game next to Mr. Grimm's. I'd love to play someone of your caliber in 1 on 1... haven't played it in at least 4-5 years but it is the ONLY Playstation game that I own currently... across any of the three consoles. That lets you know just how much I love Twisted 2 image

^^ I attempted that (on the repro cart though), I got close, but never actually beat it. Congrats.

You should go for the record Robin. I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in the neighborhood for 5:08.

  • I made an attempt to speedrun Probotector after trying to improve my time in Contra and it was the first time I played Probotector so I was surprised by some of the content in the game that was different from the USA version. It also noticed it was easier to speedrun even if I only made in in 15 minutes but it felt like it was easier to spawn the shots from the spraygun when you after picked up R and tapped the B-button rapidly

I cant do that.  I mean I could but it would take a lot of time.  The record is held by a few people and they are small... running full speed without a break.  My run is with firepower.  For me to meet that record, I would have to watch tape and practice for weeks if not months.... just to tie it.  Maybe if I break a limb or something I might give it a shot.
  • I've been working on a run of Super Mario Bros. for quite a while. I'll be sure to post my time when I finally record a legitimate run.
  • Ok, so I took down Legend of Zelda tonight in 1 hour and 50 minutes, but I am way rusty.  It's been a year since I've played it and I wasted a lot of time looking for things I should have remembered where they were (arrows for sale, for instance), plus I fumbled a couple of the dungeons.  I know I can do it under 1 hour 45 mins. with a little more practice.

That is about the only game I think I can speedrun with any regularity, there may be a few more.  Maybe Rescue Rangers

  • Back in the day I used to be able to take out Super Metroid 100% in like 1:27:00 ish. I know there a speed runs not that beat it, but this was before tool assisted crap.
  • Made another attempt and beat Legend of Zelda in 1:28 tonight, but there are still about 10 minutes I know I can shave off just by being more efficient and not playing around.  I spent way too much time trying to get the Master Key early when there really is no need.

    I can do 1:15, I know I can...

Tool Assisted speedruns are pointless other than the fact that they can discover new ways to do things for legitamite speedrunners.

Personally, I dont have the patience for speedrunning, but I love watching them. SpeedDemosArchive is one of my favorite sites of all time.

  • I really love TAS's. It's always fun to see how fast the game gets completed and "destroyed" in the process. I rather watch those than normal speedruns.

I guess many people do not like TAS's because they think that those speedrunners seek attention by showing off their "aw3sum" skills, which isn't true as they only want to entertain people (which makes sense).
  • Well some times TAS are said to be for fun and should look funny when getting played and seen. I have seen some of those but I dont put them together since to are not the same. Afterall you take advatage of glitches in the games and for me that is not the same brag as doinf the ordinarie speedrun, then newer said it aint interesting to watch TAS. It is but it lies on a different level
  • I enjoy TASes. It's a different category than normal speedruns, so they're not really in competition or anything.

It's 5 minutes flat and it's flawless. Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything that can be improved. The other really fun runs to watch are Contra 1 and 3, Metal Slug 3 on Hard with no Deaths and the Mega Mans.
  • Its about time I update the first post with times. I have beaten some of my old records and those should also be updated in the list among with the other runs in this thread...
  • Somebody just did a single-segment Final Fantasy run in 3 hours and 50 minutes, which was just published on SDA:

    http://speeddemosarchive.com/FinalFantasy.html

Also, I just submitted an Amagon run which beats the game in under 20 minutes. I've been working really hard to fine tune that one.
  • I'm thinking around Christmas/New Years, I'm going to make another speedrun attempt on Wizardry: Knight of Diamonds. Last time I spent around 6 hours and died trying to level up on Level 5 of the dungeon...but now I know I can do it far, far easier than what I was trying to do, so I'm thinking I can have it beat and posted on Twin Galaxies in around 5.5-6 hours tops.
  • I used to be able to speedrun Resident Evil 2 on N64. I think the best I ever did was 1:48 on the Claire A scenario, around 1:50 for Leon B. These days, I like watching speedruns a lot more than attempting them.
  • I naturally enjoy trying to play as fast and flashy as I can, but I still can't compete with speedrunners. The only thing I've done remotely close to that is doing the original Ninja Gaiden in about ten minutes flat (no dying, of course). I think that's the minimum you can complete that game with hardly stopping.

Heck yeah.  Twisted metal 2.  Its pretty much a toss up between that and SOTN for my favorite games of all time.  Watching those vids makes me want to bust it out and make a couple runs through it.

Thats really cool. I newer made it past stage 2 in the forestworld that comes after the beachworld. Shall take a look
  • I think they are pretty cool to watch, but I more like watching people do them live.

I guess they do Swede runs

  • Ninja Gaiden II: Dark Sword of Chaos - 13 minutes 5 seconds was my best ever (Sometime in 2004 if I recall). I can't come close to that anymore, though.
