Question about factory sealed sega genesis games.

Today I was at the flea market, and came across a CIB Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. It looked minty, but he was asking 40$. I managed to get him down to 25$. Since I had only 3 hours of sleep since I had been playing poker all night last night with friends I decided to check to make sure everything was in it. I then tore the plastic off of it, and opened it. Man it looks to be brand new... wait...

Suddenly the gears start to turn.

Did I just open a factory sealed Michael Jackson's Moonwalker without even thinking about it?

I need your guys input so I can sleep again. The seal doesn't look like anything I can find online, but here's what it looked like:

-There was only one seam, and it was thin and on the very bottom left to right. It was like a NES seam, it was not wrinkly at all. Very fine.
-There weren't any "crinkled corner" parts of the sealed in the top left or right. It was smooth all the way to the bottom left to right seam.(Those top left and right crinkled corners I saw in every online genny sealed game.)
-The top had a large opening around the hangtab.
-The plastic was as hard as granite.

I believed even after opening it that it may have been resealed, but I realized why would this guy have 1 sealed game randomly? I had opened it by instinct since at THE OTHER flea market that guy reseals all his stuff. This flea market nobody does that. Nonetheless I got a 10/10 MJW CIB for 25$, not bad, but man I could have just done something really dumb, haha!

Can anyone put my mind to rest, and confirm it was/wasn't actually factory sealed. I looked online, but I actually couldn't get a good picture, and the sega reseals online could easily fool me.

  • I have a sealed Pinocchio, and the plastic is pretty similar to what you described.

Sorry, you probably opened a factory sealed game.
  • Yeah dude factory seals on Sega games are sorta weird sometimes. It is possible that it was an original seal. Anything to give it away that it might not have been? Any dings on the game or label? manual and a bunch of inserts sitting in there fairly mint?
  • Oh crap- It sounds like I opened a factory sealed Sonic 3 several months ago.
It wasn't the 'Mega Value' version either. shiiit
  • Sure, you might have lost some money you could've made off a factory sealed copy of that game, but at least now you can say you've opened a factory sealed Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. I managed to pick up my copy of that game at a computer store the day before he died. It was strange.

Can I get a picture of it?

EDIT: I found a factory sealed Evenader Holyfield Boxing, and the seal is the same as mine. I did open a factory sealed game.

What do you guys think the value of a sealed MJ Moonwalker is?
  • I'll see about getting a picture tomorrow.

The plastic is some of the hardest, thickest shrink wrap I've ever seen. It's like they dunked the game in a vat of molten plastic!

I have seen sealed Moonwalkers listed for $2000+ but the highest sale I know of was in the $600 range. This was around the time of his death and the MJ hype was still up. Sorry to confirm bad news.

  • Yup, that's exactly like what my Pinocchio looks like.

    Ouch.
  • Dang, those pictures confirm it for me, too.

Well Potato, at least sleep easy knowing you aren't the only one who just found out you opened a factory sealed Genesis game of value. image

Although, it sounds like your Moonwalker was worth considerably more than my Sonic 3... image
  • Thanks for all the help guys! That's exactly what the seal looked like. The plastic was also insanely hard. I did open a real seal.

Well this at least will make for one heck of a(goof up) story in my collecting career!
  • image It happens Sorry Dude
  • Bummer - I opened a factory sealed Keio for the Sega CD about 3 years ago - I'll never forget it image
  • Damn dude, that was an expensive brain fart!

don't feel too bad, i saw cib copies go for more that sealed copies last summer, more than once.
  • Did it still have that new electronics smell? That's usually a decent tell (be it subjective and unreliable though).

I've also purchased and opened a few sealed Genny games, that sounds like the real thing to me too. Wonder what that would've been worth? image
  • Actually it did have that new opened game smell. I decided to put it in a SNES box protector asap, and not mess with it again. It's still as good as new, but no more factory wrap! =)

Edit: Oops, thought Lincoln was reffering to MJ's Moonwalker. No idea what the Keio game is.
