Seal of quality on box and cart

I was wondering if some games when sold new came with a box that had a round (not filled) SoQ and a cart with an oval SoQ?
For instance, I have seen Mega Man (1) where the box has a round seal and the cart an oval seal.

  • ^That is probably just a mismatched cart/box combo, I'm guessing. Mega Man 1 has a round seal of quality version. It's probable that there are some games that came this way, though, but the only way to know for sure would be to document opening a sealed game that was released around the changeover. Have you tried checking the sealed game contents list? I *think* it lists what the SoQ is. If it doesn't show that maybe that's something we should add to games that get opened within a certain production timeframe?
  • In your particular case, it's probably a mismatch as Jonathan said, but there are games that have an oval seal on the cart that never had a corresponding box. Some of the re-released black box games came with the newer seal on the cart, but not on the box.

...That we know of image.  Variant collectors, off you go!  Find it!
  • In the case of MM1, there was a break between the original issue and the rerelease so it's definitely a mismatched box/cart combo (it wasn't rereleased until after MM2 went nuclear).

I've a hunch that this may not be true for all box/carts...some produced during the seal changeover may have been mismatched at the factory to "use up" old stock of labels and soforth. But these would be the exception...most games do have, and were packaged with their correct seal counterpart.

Trust me Picard on the BB games especially I've been searching forever.  Also on some of the early Capcom releases I have carts and books but no boxes with white seals.  So I tend to agree with the using up old box stock and just changing the carts/books.
  • Since you're from Sweden, are you asking about the PAL-B EEC version? I haven't looked at too many EEC Mega Mans, but for EEC releases, I've seen multiple games (especially Konami releases) that came in three different seal variants: white oval, white round, black round. Many Europeans mistake the white oval and black round variants as NTSC versions, but they're just PAL versions. Just FYI image
