awesome work! this game is fun, albeit storylinewise a real weird mess, but the game is definately worthwhile and challenging but fun, i wish we would have gotten this one. its great to see you're making it available to the masses!
I can only again express my deepest hate towards numbered releases. I really don't get it other than people tend to think it makes a release more exclusive. Hakan and I are working hard on the Exploding Fist release and it won't be numbered, but the initial run will only be 75 carts and I'm not sure we'll make any more.
One thing I can say for sure tho, the box will blow you away, so far away you'll forget everything about damned numbered releases :-)
I do love the look of the box, it's amazing and what a cool poster! :-)
thats pretty cool you guys are working on the way of the exploding fist, i was wondering if that would ever see the light of day. is the game complete?

It seems like a good selling strategy to me. If people think its more exclusive, they are more likely to buy it.

I agree that the numbered releases do tend to get a bit tiring (especially when if you miss one, like the Spy vs. Spy B&W!), but at the same time, it's a good way for sellers to recap their initial investment in producing the game while giving buyers a feeling of getting something that's collectible instead of just a plain ol' repro.
I'm not worried about numbers I just like the fact it comes in a cardboard box, (it looks original) I'm still on the fence about the plastic boxes and tins not so sure I like them yet.

I don't care for the tins because they don't store/stack very well.
The cardboard stuff is nice, and classic, but the buy-in is so much higher than universal media cases.
Really a "better investment" would be if all of the guys with any interest in producing boxes for releases pooled together and had custom UMC boxes made that naturally accommodated NES games without the need for modification. That would take it to the next level, in my opinion...and the break even would probably only be 4 or 5 boxed releases. (and then ANY producer of cart-only games could offer an upgrade to CIB, since they'd only have to produce the cover art, and the costs of boxes would scale)
i agree with arch here^^ also, this would make the releases similar and easy to display. the tins are nice, but i hate them. they dont display well at all! cardboard boxes are nice, but they are a lot of money to get made and aren't the best cardboard... they crack and bend easily. the boxes that siv used for battle kid are awesome (although he had to modify them a little)

It was a joint effort
Retail on those plastic cases is about $0.60/each, shipped. Figure in another $0.40/each if you're really fast at chopping them up, and they're much cheaper than the alternatives.
It would be a real chore, but it MIGHT be possible to hunt down the actual manufacturer of the UMC's, and get them to modify the existing molds.
This should be somewhat cheaper than designing and prototyping a set from scratch, but is still likely a couple thousand dollars worth of initial buy-in.
The upside would be that recovering the investment SHOULD be possible if you push the new cases heavily on TheCoverProject (where everybody currently modifies existing UMCs), and if you get the repro makers and Bunnyboy on board. Also, any cart-only collectors around that want a better way to show off their games would hopefully be interested.
Though just a guess, but it seems like if there was a worthwhile return on doing this, Brian would already have capitalized on it, since all of his releases would be that much nicer and he's already the "go to" for fresh NES supplies.
So I called up MediaShelving.com and the lady said someone had JUST emailed her asking the same question
She's going to check with the manufacturing department, since the molds for the UMCs are US-owned, and see what the cost to modify molds is, along with the minimum buy-in.
It sounds like the minimum MIGHT be as much as a whole container...I have no idea how many of these things would fit in a shipping container, but I could easily see it being 10,000 units or more.

haha, yea that was me. somewhere in the thousands range of a minimum order is what i got. i dont know if its worth it, it only takes me a few minutes to dremel off the brackets inside and that is alot of cases to buy at one time.
i do like those cases though and plan on using them for other small releases on my site, should see a few more pop up in the next few months. any big release i will get boxes printed though, i think most people prefer them. i am glad i went with the plastic protectors for the boxes this time, they make a huge difference in keeping them in good shape.
^As long as the costs are nominally relative to the current UMC costs (about $.55/unit shipped), I would be up for quite a few of these over the course of the next few months. I ordered 100 of the UMC's, but they are a bitch to modify, even with the quicker methods (and I've tried all of them).
Yeah, it's not difficult to modify them, but the time involved adds up.
Did you get a real quote out of her? She was going to get back to me after talking to the shop.
The "container" guess came from some language regarding custom projects on their website.
The biggest issue I see with a big buy-in is going to be redistributing the cases, where shipping will be paid multiple times for each case. If there were a way to do it efficiently, and keep the shipped per case price for the end user reasonable, it could be worth it.
We'll see what the real numbers from the shop turn out to be. Also, it would be a factor whether or not you get to own the molds, or the things become available through their current website.
OK, received the official email...100,000 unit minimum!
ETA: I've asked for more pricing information on that 100k. If the wholesale plus molds come at a low enough cost relative to the full retail on the regular UMC's, this might not be totally infeasible. It could take awhile to drum up interest, and would almost definitely require some firm preorder commitments from seriously interested parties, though.
That's a little out of "group buy-in" price range, lol. It would probably be cheaper to buy your own molds and work out a deal with an overseas manufacturer.

This is effectively the minimum order needed to secure your own molds and have the cases produced through their manufacturer.
As for the "group buy-in" price range, I don't really know where that falls.
the first 100 games will be ready on Friday, so they will go up for sale then. around 8:00 AM, the rest of march got busy for me, so it will have to be this weekend.

Well set me up with #9 then
I doubt you want the special add-in Wizzo it's just a provocative picture of your mom.
Well, if nothing else, it gives me something to put on her Craigslist work ads
Well at least this way Joe is guarnateed to sell the first 10 all to NGD for triple the price of normal LE's!
