  • I have to say that I absolutely can't wait for this documentay. Robin and Adam: let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. I think I could give you guys an honest run in Tetris as well image I came very close to beating the TG record for lines on the Tengen version recently.
  • This will be exciting to see.

I think I'd refer to these guys a "Tetris Grandmasters", though...since I think the bar for plain ole "Tetris Master" is slightly lower.
  • I am very interested in this film. Tetris is quite easily atop my list of favorite games of all time (probably followed by Mario64) I can't even imagine the thousands of hours I've spent playing it (I actually maxed out once) so I'm really looking forward to seeing the people that are really really good battle it out.

I think it my be worth doing a "fun round" after the tournament part and let everyone try playing Tetris Worlds for gamecube or something comparable where it's so easy it's practically a joke, it could be a test to see who gets bored first and gives up, since it has hard drop, infinite spin, ghost etc.

Anyways keep us updated, great article!
  • Thanks guys. More input please! Is this something that non-tetris fans would want to see? Pay to see? Lets hear from everyone!
  • I think if you marketed it correctly, Tetris is definitely ubiquitous enough that non-gamers could appreciate the movie.

You should see if you could hook up with the guys that hacked the breaker box on a high rise to play tetris with the building's lights.
  • ^ That was MIT wasn't it? I love that vid image

Also Robin, I hate the title. Just saying. I think I'll brainstorm this afternoon at work and see what I can come up with.

However, everything else you've done is superb and there are truly some great minds (and thumbs) involved in the project.
  • brutal honesty! i love it image more please

A number of EE/CompE groups have done it.
  • Awesome idea as I loved watching the king of kong and had no interest in donkey kong before hand, but now do. I am not a big tetris fan sadly, but am always interested in seeing people mind sets, backgrounds, how much they practice, and what drives them. Also a quick blip on their daily life would be cool.

One last note and you can pm me on this Robin. Funding, what kind are you looking for...investment/donation....how much/estimated numbers needed...if you guys had a place set up where people an go and just point and click to donate...just ideas for the lazy people who like to help.

Like I said, pm me if you like Robinimage
  • i am working on a thread that deals with the investment part. Should be up soon. Shares are going to be sold (some have already) for percentage points. Donations are also accepted, either for the movie, or just so I can go out to eat more. pm me your email and I will send you the budget once we fine tune it. I will pm you soon. Great ideas on point and click. Adam and I will look in to it.
  • What's it take to buy a producer credit?
  • Arch, we are putting the finishing touches on the business plan and contracts and all that this weekend. What I know now is that shares are 500$ a pop, and equate to 1% of the film (Adam can explain better than I). A certain number will be sold (one NA investor has already committed 4), but we haven't solidified what the magic number for producer credit is. Right now we are focusing on making the contract water-tight, I will answer your question ASAP.
  • If there is the reasonable prospect of profit, then I'm definitely interested.

Even if I just break even, it'd be fun to have helped out.
  • Exactly the kind of response I was hoping for! You will be contacted soon. pm me with email please.

    This just in:

    Associate producer = 4 shares
    Executive producer = 10 shares

^ limited edition goodies involved of course

Skylers, ladies and gentlemen is the film's first Associate Producer

Arch, I should get an updated business plan tonight, contract and complete budget sometime tomorrow.
  • Cool. Good to know.
  • This could snowball into something huge! What happens if this becomes an international competition? Also, wouldn't it be embarrassing if some nobody comes in and cleans up.

It would be pretty cool to be a part of this. Funny how a little competition from your childhood can define the direction of your life.
  • little??

yes it could be the start of something that lasts forever and that is really encouraging. I really don't think it would be embarrassing if someone else came and won. It would be perfect. we dont want one of the 5 stars to win, we want to crown the best player in the world.
  • ^ Yep, dark horse competitors make for GREAT drama and set up the sequel image
  • Dumb Q: I assume your going to use the Tengen version for the competition so they can play against each other simultaneously?

Maybe a best of 5 or best of 7?

Also another idea, hold a competition here on NA, winner gets a paid trip to compete, that would make it an even number of 4 competitors. Alot of people could donate a small amount say $10 for the na competition. I think it would be a neat way to get everyone involved. Plane tickets can be cheap if you bide your time and watch the prices. All the same, I'm looking forward to this! : )

I'm assuming anyone who wants to/qualifies will be able to compete JD.
  • As of now we are allowing 600k-point players to join if they can make it there. I have scored 630k, but Im not in the league of the max-out guys so Im not competing. I think as people come out of the woodwork we might have to make it 800k, but we will cross that bridge when we get there. Honestly we will probably keep the number under 10 or so.

    edit: im dumb
  • That was confusing... I thought you meant you were allowing 600k people compete. I pieced it together though... Preferable less than 10 competitors who can score above 600k, or possible 800k if too many people can beat that score.

I await the dvd release, cash in hand.
  • The truth of the matter is there are a lot of player at my level: I practice at 15, can play well at 18, and can survive for a while at 19, but am uncomfortable there.... and can't get tetris after tetris.

level 19 is what separates the top guys from me. That is where you make the jump from 600 to max (speed is the same from 19-28), and where 1 mistake is curtains. 1 of our competitors starts his games where I usually die image

    done and thanks

  • So I read the proposal on http://ecstasyoforder.com/. An Olympic event? Seems like a bit of a stretch. If anything, there should be the equivalence to the Olympics, but just for video games. Now that would be entertaining!

Agreed.  I think being able to get to 19 with tons of tetrises on the way there makes you Tetris Master, and clearing 19 and beyond (the guys in the movie) makes you a Grand Master.

And not as many people as you think can hit that point level by Lvl 19.  There are probably lots of people that can survive to that point, but don't play a high point generating style of play.
  • Excellent article and interview, Robin! image Damn, I feel like playing NES Tetris now, but I'm just terrible at it. image
  • I was absolutely terrible at it when I first rented it back in 1989. I remember getting my 1st tetris and saying "OK I did it, screw this game". image Then I saw Kenny play and changed my mind about it. All you have to do is practice 8 hours a day for more than 6 months, and you will get really really good.
