NES Collection Value

I've just started a colletion and spent $180 on 29 NES games, my "collection" over the past 6 months. I am averaging $6/game and was wondering if it seems like I've been overpaying. I've compared these to price guides and it seems like I'm about even, but I wanted to get opinions since some games go for more than what it is in guides, while some less. Here are the games:

Alien Syndrome
Arch Rivals
Astyanax
Dragon Warrior
Excitebike
Final Fantasy
Friday the 13th
Gargoyle's Quest 2
Ghosts n Goblins
Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors 2
Hydlide
The Legend of Zelda - Gold Cart
Zelda 2- Grey Cart
Marble Madness
Mega Man 3
Metriod - Grey Label
Quattro Sports
Silver Surfer
Spy vs Spy
StarTropics
SMB/Duck Hunt
SMB 2
SMB 3
TNMT
Ultimate Stuntman
Wheel of Fortune
Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego
Willow
Zoda's Revenge

  • Nothing exceptionally rare, a few higher value items...$6/cart can generally be considered overpaying, but at the same time, paying $1 on eBay and $7 shipping ends up being more. Your best bet if you want to expand cheap is to buy larger lots for cheap. I'd say all told you'd break even if you sold off, there's some quality titles in there that usually fetch more than your average per-cart price.
  • I have been buying lots when I can get a good price. Unfortunately, the first few carts I was buying for $10-$15 a pop. Thanks for your opinion.
  • I hate to beat a dead horse, but is The Legend of Zelda the -->image<-- edition?
  • I should've known when I posted this someone would say it.
  • Well, a few of them are worth $10-15 if you sold them on eBay. The Zeldas and Final Fantasy do regularly, and some like Zoda's Revenge and Gargoyle's Quest II can hit $10 each or more, depending if anyone's looking for them. If you buy lots though, you'll eventually bring down your per-cart average, at least until you hit the triple-digit carts image What sort of collection are you going for? Also, selling your doubles will bring some turnaround too. You may not have any yet, but you will eventually unless you start paying more for individual games.

I've got a feeling this dude might have read up on that beforehand...there's no price check thread image
  • As of right now I'm just cart collecting. I play at least all games I buy, not saying I like them all, but if I get them for cheap I don't mind. Funny thing is the Zelda 2 and Gargoyles 2 for 6, FF for 8, Zoda for 2.50, and MM 3 for 4.50. It was those early Marios, Metroid, and Silver Surfer that probably brought my average up.

No doubles yet but for the right price I will sure buy them.
  • Silver Surfer and the Marios are the only ones that should have been low, Metroid is another $10-15 game. Some nice pickups though man. Kinda makes me nostalgic for the days when I could remember what I paid for my collection...all I know is I have something in the 5 digit range wrapped up (multiplatform, not just NES). Sounds like you're a gamer first and foremost though...how much time do you spend playing the games? Even the ones you don't like, I'm kinda curious if you give them all a fair shake or just play for a couple minutes and switch up image
  • If you're averaging 6 dollars, then you over payed $5.90 for Astayanax
  • Astyanax is fun though...at least you get some play value out of the game!
  • Hey OP, everyone overpays a little when they first start collecting, grabbing up the games they've always wanted or remember playing as a kid. But don't worry, you've got a lot of cool games and if you're having fun playing them then consider it money well spent!
However, If you want to get a large collection together quickly and (relatively) cheaply, bid on the large eBay lots as wiz suggested. My personal pricepoint for large lots (30+ loose carts) is a mere 1.25 per game. Sometimes I'll go 1.50 if there's some high demand titles in there. Just put in your max price and let it ride - you won't win every time, but if you're patient in the long term and don't succumb to last minute overbidding, you'll eventually get a decent collection together for cheap. Then sell the doubles in smaller lots or individually to recoup money for more game purchases or profit. Use the money to go after the less common games you need to fill the holes in your collection. You can use NA's price guid to get an idea of what a realistic selling price would be for your doubles.
  • Man I learned if you want to learn if you are getting a good deal, start an excel spreadsheet now while you are early and can remember.. Make a column with what you paid and a column with the ezine price.. then you for sure know. It got crazy for me though when I bought lots and started selling.. I know Ive paid about 1/4 of what the worth is.. but I cant be for certain cause I just made my list tonight and cant remember early purchase cost.

That is exactly what I am doing. However I haven't really started collecting yet, and everything I have (besides retrozone releases) is from mine or my wifes childhood collections.

Great idea! I'm just starting to get together a spreadsheet like this myself. I'm going to try and keep track of my selling prices too. It will certainly make me feel better when I can actually see in black and white that I'm getting a good deal or even turning a profit (although the $ prob just gets funneled into more game purchases). image
I'm hoping it will also help convince my gf that i'm not wasting my money, especially with all the packages she's seen come through here lately image

Yes thats how I came up with the $6/game average and I have also used Digitpress.com price guide to come up with a $6/game value. I think Im going to build for multiple price guides. For doubles and selling(when I do start doing this) I am going to build in formulas for that as well. I work in Excel all day so Im always tweaking spshts. I would like to somehow build in the human factor for valuing ie. Bucky OHare is valued at $8 but I have yet to see it go for less than $10 + shipping, maybe I will start taking individual ending sell prices from ebay and average them. I dunno yet.
  • Nice lot you picked up, some nice titles in that bunch. I think you did pretty good.

The NA price guide already does this.
  • Yea, the ezine price guide is based on the ebay average.. see I failed to start a spreadsheet when I began because I wasnt expecting to buy more than a few games.. then I started purchasing lots off craigslist and reselling them. The only way I know Im coming off ahead is because of those craigslist lots.. I got more out of those than I have spent on the majority of my games. Only ones that cost me really are some of the harder to find ones. Good luck, looks like you have a nice start.
