I am really hoping this is the new system. I hope this isn't another DS iteration, but rather a system that will play exclusive games IE DS2. If it is I buy it, but if not it is not likely. My little bro has a ds lite and I sold my launch DS years ago. I have been waiting for the DS2 to come out for ages and this better be it.

This is the true successor to the DS, not another revision.
Good thing they announced it before the DSi XL comes out. Now I can cancel my pre-order and wait for this.
^ I got out of the handheld market a long time ago, but I tend to agree when the improvements are only marginal. This seems like a legitimate reason to buy a new platform, but when they just took the DS and "smallered" it the various times, that's not a very good reason to upgrade IMO.
Wow, that just blows my mind. I am going to jizz my pants when I see that in person.
That's not the 3DS, that's a game you can get right now for the DSi in Japan. It just uses the built-in camera for head tracking.
The tech in the 3DS (according to reliable Japanese press) uses the "parallax barrier" method from Sharp, which is already on some cell phones. I'm not sure I totally understand it, but I think tiny slits in the LCD screen show a different image depending on if you look at it from the left or from the right, and if you're looking at it straight on you get the illusion of depth.

My understanding of it, is there is a screen overlay that refracts the image so each eye sees a slightly different image to generate a stereoscopic effect when you hold the screen at a certain focal point.
They have overlays for TV's that will work at something like 8 different sitting positions, but for the DS, they only need to set it up for a single viewing angle.

I was wondering the strategy behind this. Doesn't seem very logical to me.
No offence but is this site reliable and are we sure its not a spoof?
I don't get the timing. Isn't the DSiXL due out soon?...

There was an official announcement about it today. It's for real.

When I saw that, it instantly reminded me of this.
Regardless, very cool stuff... I haven't been this excited for a Nintendo system in a long time.
It also made front page of yahoo.

There is also a video clip in there that is pretty cool
Wow, they work quick. I only asked for it yesterday!
I posted a link to the news in that other thread right after you asked for it
