    it looks like dirty faded plastic to me.

    open it up and see if the inside of the shell is red aswell?

    we must be looking at different pictures, or do you have this physically in your possession?

    I'm guessing it was resprayed with Krylon Fusion or one of the other "bonding" enamels, where the paint fully bonds to the outer layers of plastic.

    Does it have the toaster door?  The lack of a door, with nice crisp "Nintendo Entertainment System" written on, kind of seals the deal for me that this is just painted.

    Either open it up or shine a flashlight in the cooling vents on top. Most people cant get paint to spray all the way in the vents.

    Well, the av toploader was pretty much unknown until a few months ago. I suppose it's very slightly possible it was a one off for some kind of promotion or something, but I really really really doubt it.
