Will the toaster ever just cease to work?

A lot has been made about the reliability of the NES and other classic gaming consoles vs. the cd based consoles of today, Solid State seem to win big over in terms of reliability. With some Toasters reaching 25 years old now, and the majority I would think around 20, I wonder if there would be a point where they would just cease to operate?  Maybe the boards get corroded to nothing, or the contacts have rusted into oblivion.  I know that there are Atari's still out there working from the late 70's/early 80's.  But these things can't possibly last forever.

Or can they?......................

  • Yes...the chips in them wil eventually go bad...more likely however is that caps on the board start leaking or like you said rust forms on the contacts.

According to the second law of thermodynamics, coupled with the proof that the rate at which the universe is expanding is increasing, eventually the universe will reach a state of maximum entropy and molecules won't even be able to hold their bonds.

    Nothing lasts forever...
  • I don't know, even the great  French physicist Sadi Carnot can be proved wrong on occasion, especially by the mighty toaster, with a NEW 72 PIN!

Soooo how'd you do on your science paper? Haha, excellent post!

  • Wow, I was just thinking about this last night. I was wondering when/if ever there ever be a point where everyone's NES will start to have the same problem of one or more components going bad.

Good thing I more then just one. If you figure one lasts at lest 20 years, I got enough to get through my lifetime image
