SNES questions galore!

Hello.   I recall playing and loving several SNES games when they were released.   At the time I was in my early 20s and all I really know of SNES is the games that I have played personally and from a few sites that I have visited.

Here is what I am wondering:

EVERYTHING really.  Probably too much to get into in this thread.   For one, what are the "essentials"  ?   Not 'rare' games per se, but the ones that are killer titles.    Also, what of this 'Yobo' handheld machine?   Does it play all of the games well, or?    I looked on Google for a SNES fansite/forum, but didnt find any that really were current.    I know that this system is a fan favorite, and from what I have seen for VERY good reason, but I need to know MORE.   I suppose what I am really asking is for any 'SNES pros' here to give me any and all opinions that they have regarding the system, its games, the Yobo machine, the accessories, EVERYthing!    You can post here or PM me.   I'm sure that just as there are folks here that focus on NES and GameBoy that there must be SOME that adore and focus on the SNES.    So then, tell me everything, because the extent of my SNES 'knowledge' is Castlevania, Zelda, and a small handful of other games.   Oh, and I know that the original Japanese machine was called the Super Famicom, but thats about it!

Opinions?   Recommendations?   "Insider info" on the system and its library?   I want it ALL.

Thanks  guys!  image

Regards,

A.R.

  • First of all i dont rec. Yobo things i really like the retro duo or the SNES to play.

the must own games for snes are.

All the Donkey Kong Country's hands down

    Chrono Trigger

    Mario RPG

    Mario ALl Stars

    Castlevania 4

    Zelda LTTP

    Killer Instinct

    Sunset Riders

    Contra Alien Wars

    Earthbound(if you have $$)

    Kirby Superstar

    F Zero

    Megaman X

    Super Metroid

    Street Fighters

I really think the snes is the best ever i love it.. I would rec. to you to play through the DKC trilogy those are some of the best plat formers ever made.

Lemme know if you need some games or any help.

  • I think he just wants a portable SNES though. There's a few good ones out there, just never used one. I haven't played my SNES for a LONG time now, so I can't really recommend much at this point, although I personally think Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is the best RPG on the system.
  • Dont listen to anything Mike says hes a bitch
  • I fucking LOVE this place image

Anyway, yeah, I'm more of an NES guy than an SNES guy. I'd go with Joe's recommendations, save personal-preference conflicts (ie if you don't like fighting games, don't bother with Killer Instinct, etc).
  • O also add Turtles in Time

    Super Punchout

    Gradius 3

    SMash TV

  • Yikes...."jews" and "bitches"....is this NA or the Springer Show?? image

And yes, Wizard was correct, I NEED portability. I own at least 6 SNES decks, thats not an issue.
  • If you like fighting games, check out the Street Fighter series. My brother and I play that on a daily basis
  • Although I'm mainly a NES collector, you gotta admit the SNES is probably one of the best systems ever in terms of quality games! I think most of the must-owns were mentioned already... except R-Type III (IMHO). Not be confused with Super R-type, which is not nearly as good. Oh, and Super Double Dragon. So many good games I want to mention but I'm trying to be selective... Sparkster... Uniracers... Tetris Attack is pretty addictive. Ooh- Actraiser!
A.R., what kind of games do you enjoy most? RPGs (if so, SNES is THE system), Shmups, Platform...?

Edit: ...and Zombies At my Neighbors! Pocky & Rocky! Mystical Ninja!

Edit Edit: I think I might need to start seriously collecting for the SNES now, LOL! image  I'm getting all excited and drooly thinking of how many awesome games there are... plus it's so easy to import for (just open the SNES up and break the plastic tabs)

Edit^3: Super Ghouls N Ghosts!! Demon's Crest!!! and don't forget to pick up a Super Gameboy so you can play your old GB games in beautiful yet limited color! oh and Mario Paint is somewhat dated but still provides some silly fun (I mean, who wouldn't want to draw weiners and boobs on their SNES??)

  • AWESOME info Ace! Thanks man! image Yup, we have some of those on the way...and we got a Super GameBoy the other day that looks unused! Zombies Ate My Neighboors, lol, great game! My ex-wife was OBSESSED with the Genesis version. About the SGB, obviously GBA wont work on it, but what about GBC? ...Or only the older grayscale games? (I have Bubble Ghost and Gargoyle's Quest on the way for GB as well!) Happy times!

*EDIT*  By the way, my wife is convinced that your avatar is a human penis with a Luchador mask attached...She's probably RIGHT, but lord I hope not...LOL

  • Some GBC games will work on the SGB, as long as it doesn't have the "Only for Game Boy Color" logo in the bottom right corner. Most compatable games have at least one screenshot of gameplay on an original Game Boy on the back as well.

EDIT: Some GBC-only games also had some neat easter-egg type screens when used on a regular Game Boy or a Super Game Boy, so they may still be worth plugging in for shits and giggles image
  • RetroBasement's post is a shame to the entire SNES collector's scene for not including Yoshi's Island. Also, I know many people don't like this next game, but it's one of the best in my opinion, Star Fox!

EDIT: Added a quote then removed it because I took too long to post it. Figures.
  • I didn't care for Yoshi's Island...well, except that "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" stage when on mushrooms image
  • Screw it. Nevermind this post.
  • As far as I'm concerned, if it says "Game Boy Color" on the front of the box, it's a GBC game. Those carts you specify say Game Boy Color on the box. Thus, they're not Game Boy games, they're GBC games. PERIOD. They're just made backwards compatable.

    GREAT GAME ,
  • I don't care for Mario games in general. SMB2 and Super Mario World were the only Mario games I liked.

im sure your going to laugh at me
but did you ever 100% beat the game      96*
  • Yup, I did man. It's been ages though, haven't even played the game in 10+ years.
  • No prob, AR!
Yes, some GBC games work. The gb-compatible ones (usually black cartridge) will work in a Super Gameboy (they will have a code in the bottom of the label that starts with DMG-). The GBC exclusive ones won't (generally in a clear cartridge) will not (their code starts w/ CGB-). The "CGB's" will still boot, but they almost always give you that message saying "Sorry bitch, this game only works on Gameboy Color!"

Yeah, Yoshi's Island rules, I think I like it better than SMW! image Am i going to hell for saying that? And StarFox, while graphically amusing in this day and age, is surprisingly not-dated (gameplay-wise). Still fun!

Oh yeah - the Earthworm Jim games.

Oh and - my avatar: it is an extreme closeup of that owl lamp from the classic "Ace Ebb" photo in Nintendo Power #1. Full pic attached for reference. Luchador... like a nacho libre mexican wrestler mask? Lol, that's hilarious! Where would I get one that small?! All my luchador masks are size 7-1/4 (US).

Pictured Below: Power Player "Ace" Ebb looking bad as hell...

  • For PAL exclusives... GET TERRANIGMA!!! It is THE best SNES RPG next to Chrono Trigger. It has humour and vast exploration sections that never get boring cos of their quirky nature. This game is soul-movingly deep if you take the time to play it... It might be expensive but sure as heck worth to play it!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terranigma

You travel time and the entire Earth and help humanity progress its evolution. It touches various subjects of various religions and ways of life, it even has a secret way to add the Quintet (dev team) headquarters to a town so you can chat up with them in the game! This game is full with easter-eggs and fun mini-games. You won't get bored!
  • LOL...friggin crazy.... And hey man..."Where would I get one that small"...Hmmmm... Maybe try a cashew shell and some Elmer's glue chief! image Oh yeah, Terranigma..yep..used to hang with this guy we called "Samoean Mike" and he loved that game. This guy was a HUGE friggin beast and he used to sit at home all day everyday and screw with computers and "burn discs" and whatnot. He really lived for those Japanese RPGs...used to go to this place called "Zophar" something or other and get ROMs and force me to play them..ha. Good Times....

Anyhow guys, thanks for the opinions. Thanks Meru, though I'll never afford it..

    Take care

    A.R.
  • Zophar's Domain. Liked the site, although I think all you can get now is the translation patches, not the full ROMs. www.zophar.net Don't even think he's keeping the site up anymore, pretty sure it's just a mirror now.
  • Wizard, well I understood roughly 50% of your last statement. Damn, I just got my first cell phone last year and I dont know a 'download' from a doughnut..

    ha

  • Long story short, I know the site you're talking about image

Oh snap! I dunno, a cashew shell might be a little roomy, I was thinking more along the lines of a mask fashioned from a pollen grain, or maybe some carbon nanotubes or buckyballs might fit a little better! image
Oh uh... that's just a joke, ladies... image *chk chk* RAAOWR!!!
  • Damn, a fella ASKS about some SNES games but GETS remarks about owl lamps and cashew condoms...tsk tsk tsk....

    lol

  • SOrry if i jump in the boat, anyone is able to point me to a Star Ocean rom that can actually save on SNES powerpak? image Thanks!

ps. I don't like football so much but absolutely you have to play with International Superstar Soccer deluxe
  • Dunno about ROMS man... Superstar Soccer, eh? Maybe I will try it...is Pele in the game?? image Ciao!
