Best NES Games Under $3?

what do you consider to be the best valued games according to "the price guide"

SMB, Maniac Mansion are the two that come to my mind. But what are your thoughts. I haven't played very many NES games though.

Comments

  • Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warship.

    Edit: Whoops, that's technically a $4 game.
BTW, Maniac Mansion is $10 and SMB is $6 in the Price Guide... where do you get your NES prices?
  • i dont know why those games r so high, i can normally go to any flea market around here or a goodwill and find smb/duck hunt for .50 cents. but i guess i have never seen "the price guide" before so I guess we will go by that. **BTW DOES ANYONE WANNA BUY SMB/DUCK HUNT for $6 a pop just LMK cuz I think I can get around 10 of these by sunday.**
  • You sir, need to download the NintendoAge E-Zine and check out the NES Price Guide. Here's a link:

    http://www.nintendoage.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=eZine.Download&issue=04-2010

The It's updated monthly with real-time prices by one of the admin here at NA, dangevin.

price guide is close to the end of the Ezine. Take it with you when you go to the flea market... it's beyond helpful. image

If you can get them for 50 cents, pick up a few, bundle them with systems, and put them on eBay for $60 BIN.  2 controllers and a gun, plus hookups.  They sell pretty quick, especially at Christmas.
  • cool thanks for the info
  • No problem. Anyway, a few good commons would be Captain Skyhawk, Tetris, Vice: Project Doom, Deja Vu, Dick Tracy...hell, for $3 or less, just pick up pretty much anything. Most games are worth playing at least once at that price, just make sure to give it a good solid effort. Most people write off games like Total Recall, Conan, or Dr. Chaos without playing them for more than 5 minutes. While they may not be the best games out there, they really aren't as bad as they're made out to be, at least once you get the hang of the game mechanics.
  • Oh yes.. Dr Chaos. I enjoyed this one. Another game I need to re-buy
  • can say i have never played either
  • the problem I have with the price guide is that the value of the game has the shipping cost valued in with it. It's in fine print and is hard to see. However, I pointed this out to a member the other day and he never knew it was avergaed in with the value. I guess it's really not a big deal but for me I'd rather the price just be figured by the actual price the auctions go for.
  • ^ But you need the shipping price factored into the equation. What if you have a game that sells for $0.99 + $4 S/H, and then it sells next time for $4.99 with free shipping?

That's why you add the price + shipping together. Then you subtract out "real shipping cost" which is about $2.09 for a 5 ounce NES cart via First Class Mail printed online. Then you see what the true value of that cart is...
  • well, put it like that and it makes more sense. Thanks

I consider Conan among my personal favorites...Dick Tracy is a masterpiece compared to that image  And frankly, they took what could be just a generic platformer and added a pretty cool detective element (having to find evidence before arresting the criminals was a pretty cool idea in '90).  I can't say it's a terrible game.
  • To name a few blaster master, rad racer, marble madness, ikari warriors 2, RC-pro am, star tropics 1 and 2, a boy and his blob. To name a few

i've had ikari warriors 2 since it was released, and it took me until very recently to realize that it's a terrible game. i can't think of a game where your character moves any slower, making it absurdly difficult to avoid getting hit. also your character is pretty large, which is usually nice, but here you're just a big lump of a target. also when you collide with an enemy, rather than the standard practice of blinking and having a chance to recover, you continually take damage.

thumbs up for rad racer though, that's always a blast.
  • So wait, you liked it as a kid, but you recently decided it sucks? How the fuck does that work?

Take the time to learn the street layout.  Don't worry if you die a ton or not, just take the effort to learn the streets and get the hang of driving.  Once you do that, the snipers shouldn't be an issue, as you'll pass by beforehand.  Also, if you need to kill a sniper for whatever reason, get out of the car and hide behind it.  The car gets hit, but you don't, and as long as you're not IN the car, there's no damage dealt image
  • Might be looking for a Dick Tracy then, sounds fun.

Also, actually enjoyed playing Total Recall last night, though brief, I was amazed how far I got on one try, your copy is in the mail today.

This list would be pretty long for me, I can get muy games for less than 4 dollars, so I'll just name a couple of my faves, that I have picked up cheap, I'm not even looking at the price guide, it doesn't even matter, if you look long enough you'll find a cheap copy even on the bay:

    Golgo 13

    Dragon Warrior

    1942 and 1943

    Blades of Steel
  • Told you Total Recall wasn't bad. How far did you get? The room where you fight your wife is a bitch, but once you pass that part it's a pretty fun game overall.
  • I got to the subway, the K-9's ate my lunch there

What's your favorite Wizardy game Wiz?
