Finally finished Dragon Warrior II
It may not seem like much of an accomplishment to some, but finishing DWII is something I have wanted to do for a long time:

The last two areas of the game were just insane. I think I had to gain at least 10 levels in Rhone to be able to take on Malroth. He only killed me once; the second time I went back, I kicked his ass bad. I decided to use the Princess' Chance spell, and it decreased Malroth's defense by over 60 points! From then on it was just attack and heal. I'm just glad I was finally able to beat this game - it was definitely the most difficult of the 4 NES DW's.

This is definitely my favorite game from the series, so I'm amazed I never discovered the possibility of having 2 Water Flying Clothes. How do you get the second one from Don Mahone?
Wow, I don't think I've ever had Chance do something useful when it mattered

There's a listing on there that tells how to do it. Lots of walking involved!
And with regards to the Chance spell, I kept trying it when I was fighting on the map to see what it would do. I would say a good 2/3 of the time it cast that super-strong Defence spell. Every now and then it would try to confuse enemies or put them to sleep. I also had it heal all 3 party members at once one time. It never did anything harmful to me, though; I thought it would have a chance of confusing me or casting Explodet on my party or something. Maybe it does and it just never happened to me.
And just for discussion, did anyone else get so damn tired of those stupid Gold Batboons casting Sacrifice all the time?
This is supposed to be the hardest DW game on NES, correct? I've had it for awhile and just haven't got around to playing it. I'll probably start it sometime in coming weeks.
Nice!

"Hard" is kind of a distorted term when applied to a Japanese RPG. They're all easy if you level grind enough.
This one does have the largest sudden step in enemy strength, though, when you finally make the trip to Rhone.
DW1 is one of my favorite games. I don't like the character management so I only played DW2 until I got the boat. Then it seemed like maps were a requirement.
This is precisely the point at which I abandoned it, too.
Awesome thread. I'd beaten DW1 dozens of times but I also just recently beat 2 for the first time.
Rad game, but yeah, there was a pretty serious jump in difficulty in the cave to the final area. Is it just me or did it also get a bit tough in the tower east of Moonbrook? Just a snooch unbalanced in spots, but I loved it.
Now I'm just waiting for 3 and 4. Currently in transit to me. Pah....................

Yeah, the tower east of Moonbrook is a big jump in enemy strength, at that point in the game.
I recently beat Dragon Warrior IV and looking back I'd agree that II was the most difficult to get through. They're all great games though and I had fun playing every one of them.
I thought DW4 was really well put together. I wish I'd had it as a kid, but didn't have the chance to play it until a few years ago.
DW3 just didn't have the same appeal as the others, for some reason. It was a good game, and had all the major elements, but something about throwing class changes into the mix just didn't feel like Dragon Warrior to me (though I know it's now a mainstay feature of the series).
I only recently got into the series due to this game and the DS remakes and needless to say, I'm envious of you lot
Currently playing through the GB version of DQIII with I&II to follow, but they're so time consuming!
Also, is it me, or are the Dragon Quest Monster games really difficult to get into?
