Super Mario All-Stars question

Recently picked up a cart only super mario all-stars. When only playing super Mario 3, I push the "Select" button and mario changes into his other suits(frog, raccoon,) When I keep pushing the "select" button mario will be half frog half raccoon. I only have one copy so not sure if this is common or a defect, any help appreciated.
