Shelving Malfunction

I decided to do a little spring cleaning today and clean off all my Games and reorganize them.  Well, while in the process, one of my shelves collapsed and all my CIB NES, Sega Saturn, and Genesis games came crashing down from 6' to a hardwood floor!  I think my heart stopped when I looked at the carnage.  Luckily I never had too many rare games on that shelf, but all of my Sega Saturn Cases are now trash.  A few of the cardboard CIB's got some dings, but it looks like my durable NES and Genesis survived well.  I don't think there's too much irreversible damage, thank God, just a ton of broken Saturn cases.  I guess I can't have a nice display of games, looks like it's back to the totes until I find a more durable way to display my games.

Anybody have any spare Sega Saturn cases laying around?  Or a crap ton of cheapo sports games?

Anyone else have to go through a tragedy of picking up your games piece by piece?

  • Damn man that sucks! Wish I could help out but I'm sure those Saturn cases are a bitch to replace. I collect PS1 and swapping jewel cases is bad enough, but everytime I get a longbox game with a broken hinge I just sigh and know it'll take a while to upgrade.

replacement cases show up on ebay very sporatically, and they go fast.  Your best best is to find a place that has NOS crappy sports titles.  check out www.mcvans.com  THeir online store is down I believe, but give them a call.  I bought 25 copies of College Slam @ $2 each a few years ago.  They had tons of other cheap crap titles too. Best of luck sir, I know the feeling.

  • Sorry to hear this man, you may consider attaching the shelf to the wall, so prevent this from happening in the future.

  • I don't know if you'd even consider going a slightly different route, but you could go with DVD cases for all of your Sega Saturn games. The Cover Project (http://www.thecoverproject.net/). They have reformatted and custom covers that will fit into DVD cases. This wouldn't be a bad alternative even temporarily. Let me know if you need any help. I could print them out for you on our laser at work (though, it would be on regular weight paper). God bless!
  • Thanks for the tip ulasamosa, I'll check into it. As for my shelf, it was attached to the wall and I did numerous weight tests with it before putting any gaming stuff on it. The shelf was up for about 4 months before it decided to go down today. There isn't much for studs on that side of the room so I had the shelf anchored into the drywall with tons of screws. I guess it wasn't enough.
  • ohh, sorry to hear that.. they make new drywall anchors with screws that are pricey but hold lots of weight.. The anchor is basically a white screw that then accepts another screw to hold the weight.. I haven't used it on shelves but I have used it to hold hooks supporting about 100 pounds on ..

Those anchors are bad ass...I use them at work for mounting Smartboards.
  • Thanks PSerge, I'll check out my local hardware stores for those anchors. Better safe than sorry on the rest of my shelves. On the other side of the room I think I'm ok. I have like 10 screws in each shelf screwed into studs.
  • I thought those anchors were "standard" for putting screws into walls...I know my dad ALWAYS uses them...

I see, yeah I used anchors not quite that good, but close.  When those suckers came out they put some big holes in the wall.  I think I'm going to get some better anchors and add another bracket or two for extra support.  I still don't know if I'll trust my games up there again, maybe use it for box displays or something.  I've been trying to hit up a movie rental store that's closing down for some nice display shelving for my games.  There's plenty of them closing down lately.
  • Use Lozier shelving and I can assure you will never have this problem again. Best of all you won't have to use any brackets

Oh you're talking like actual shelving the stores use.  If I was able to get my hands on that, it'd be perfect!  I'm a merchandiser and have access to dividers and fence fronts.
  • Try local store supply places. I bought some to hold my games and they are awesome. Litterally you can lay on the shelves, without any problem at all.

Edit: You can also try Craigslist. I always see the stuff available through there from store closings and such in my area.

I thought about taking pictures, but by that time I already had half the mess cleaned up.  I wish I would have, it wasn't pretty.
