Donkey Kong Cereal shirt

Well, I know the donkey kong cereal items are collectible (as are all video game cereal items as there is a cross popularity with 2 collecting worlds).

I got this DK cereal shirt - and Im pretty sure it was a promo only, as, I don't think they sold these items at retail.

I thought I recalled 1 to 2 years back, a DK cereal shirt sold for $100? Anyways, just wanted some opinion on value - maybe from someone who knows items from that era, or, the DK cereal stuff.

I cant find any info anywhere about the shirt...

Thanks!!

  • Just wondering. What size is that?
  • It looks like if you added a few buttons to the lower hem it would be a "onesie" image

Its actually a Youth Small. Im hoping, that, the bottom wasn't cut. The person I bought it from says this is how they initially came. I've seen shirts like it, so, I am kind of leaning in that fashion.

yeah it looks very tiny. I am pretty sure the shirt came like that. I have a few of those styled shirts and they all look cut at the bottom.

Thats what my thoughts were. I know I've seen vintage 80's football shirts shaped this way at times, so, I was leaning to the fact it did come this way.

Also, I could see these really only being kids shirts, since, it was marketed towards kids. I am really thinking it was a mail-away only item, but am unsure.

Anyways, if anyone has leads or info about this - that would be awesome! This was more setup as a finders keepers / price check  / origins post - just didnt know where to put it.

I paid $20ish for the shirt, and the main reason was because I know the cereal systems are highly collectible, and I have the DK Cereal box already, as well as the third place prize on the back of the cereal box which is the yellow donkey kong sleeping bag i have, which can be seen here.

  • Looks like it was most likely part of a pajama set.  I googled it and didnt find much but some one posted a picture of them in similar set of pajamas on retroland. I know its not the same but looks similar.  Also the collar seems pretty thick to be a shirt. But the style of that shirt looks like a baseball training shirt.

  • nice pic image and thanks for the reference, but, I did a little research and the type of shirt is called a "raglan" shirt. They were popular during that time period, and, if you ebay it, it does come up with shirts of this style. I found a number of vintage sports shirts with the baseball style sleeves and the raglan style shirt design image

I do agree though, it is very similar to a onsie. lol. I really hope it wasn't part of a pajamas set :/ Anyone find anything on how to obtain the shirt?
  • I hope you find out where it came from. Either way you got a pretty neat shirt.
  • Dealer price answer: $100-$175, depending on condition. The size cuts the price down quite a bit, as if it was an adult size (which is far more rare), it would be $250+. If it is NOS (New Old Stock/Never Worn or Washed), double the price. DK cereal lists in my cereal boxes guide (unopened) as $300-500, and folded as $125-200, IIRC, and the T-Shirt would be a bit less than the box, as although fewer were made, more were likely saved.

Yea, I would say it was the adult version that sold at open auction for $100+ if I recall correctly. I believe it was 1-2 years back, and I havent seen another since. I guess the rarity / price is why!

I also agree on the analogy of fewer shirts were made, but more were saved than the box. That makes perfect sense image

  • This was the most common promo graphic for DK items of the era. The difference is, on this shirt it actually says "CEREAL" below the title. There was a lot of apparel...even trucker hats, which had this logo on, but those six little letters set this one apart.

I would say you could get $100-$150 for it pretty easily.  I had a similar shirt I sold privately a year or so back in that range.

Also, the shirts definitely came like that (at the bottom).  Old style baseball shirts were produced this way, and many companies will simply just copy that look.  It's simply the difference between a shirt that's been folded and hemmed vs. one that has simply been cut.  Maybe there was a significant cost difference back in the day between selling shirts "unhemmed" and actually taking the time to do so.

Wait, the most common promo graphic for DK has Mario and DK squishing Walnuts with a hammer? image
