  • ^ I traded a large amount of dual lands away at $10 apiece "back in the day" when you could still pull them from $2.95 booster packs image
Worst one was trading 7 away for a copy of "Lich" soon after it had gone out of print image That speculation didn't pan out, lol.

FoW does work the second way, 2 cards + 1 life = 1 counter. It's just indispensable in the oldest formats to stop people from randomly winning on the first turn...everyone needs 4x per deck so demand goes up. Wanna see another silly uncommon blue card that gets sick money? Look up Mana Drain lately. I'm glad I got those out of the way while they were only $35.

Also Matt, I'd probably unload both of your Gideons right now while they're hot. My wife and I got lucky we just bought one pack of each and I pulled Kozilek. Sold it on eBay this afternoon within about a half hour for $16 image
  • And Dan, totally agreed about the "who to play and where's the time" spiel. I love breaking them out, rearranging my binder, messing around but there's just nobody to play. And I sure don't want to go to a tournament and have my ass handed to me by some kid with a rich mommy who's beating me with cards older than he is.
  • ^ totally agree.

Mana drain eh? I used to have those. Sounds like I will be regretting selling them. At least with legends though you can get the italian ones to make it cheaper. I had an underworld dreams deck that I used to absolutely love. Wonder if I still have those UD's.
  • ^ $100 eh? can't say I'm too surprised actually. In fact if mana burn is gone I am really surprised they are not more because really the only drawback of that card was potential mana burn.
  • hey Dan I just looked up underworld dreams and see the price has dropped due to a reprinting... I thought you said they weren't reprinting legends cards?

UDx1, 2, or 3 and wheel of fortune just put a smile on my face when it worked
  • They weren't reprinting Legends _rares_. UD was always Uncommon image

  • For all those interested. These are just my permanent T1 deckmaking stock.
  • bronty, italian legends mana drains still go for a shitload. i had a playset of those and a playset of english. i got just about as much for the italians as i did for the english back in the day! i cant believe mtg is still so big. i remember taping the championships from espn2 one year. when everyone around me quit, i thought it was dying and i got out ASAP. bad decision i guess!

wow I would never have thought of FOW as a old format type card.   Makes sense now that you explain it that way.   Can you give me an example of a first turn win?

Yes and no... I mean I sure wish I'd held onto my dual lands but with nobody to play and once you get married and start a career and your friends you used to play with all have the same thing going on.. what good are the cards to you really, unless you just like looking at them.

Isn't it smaller now than it was before though?   I have no idea, just seems that way from the perspective of someone who is out.

I remember driving down to seattle to visit my buddy and seeing the WOTC headquarters.... it was hilarious..   too geeky even for me.   You're walking down the street and you see bakery, florist, jeweller, ***lifesize mtg statues**** cafe, coffee shop, bookstore...   I've never seen a more out of place building in my life image

  • i have nooooooo idea about its popularity nowadays but looking at todays prices of things that i sold off 7-10 years ago, i would assume it is very frickin popular. THATS the reason i wish i held on to them. i had eeeeeeverything! if people are willing to pay the prices they are paying for alpha/beta/unlimited stuff now, mtg must be fairly popular. to me, i know of no one who plays, so other than looking at ebay prices, mtg seems dead to me! it still makes me cry thinking about what i sold. on my home computer, i remember taking a scan of the binder page with the power 9 on it. i used that pic to sell all of them on ebay. i wish i still had it. i had 1 mox from alpha, 1 mox from beta, and the remaining 7 were from unlimited. my library of alexandria was the mintest card i had. oh, that thing was beautiful!!! all these memories make me want to cry!!! damnit!
  • Some complex decks use this card and all the best low-cost mana producers and card drawing to get a 10-spell storm. Dark rituals, moxes, mana artifacts, etc plus a big Yawgmoth's Will at the end usually seal the deal.

    imageimage

Another popular combo, which is called "Bomberman" because it abuses the Spellbomb to both draw your entire deck, and kill the opponent:

    imageimageimage

Or instead of going infinite on one single turn, you can just get infinite turns with this cheaper, easier combo:

    0image

...and just win with anything in your deck.

Player has an opening hand thus:

    Swamp
    Dark Ritual x3
    Nether Shadow
    Hatred
    one other random card

The turn plays out like this:

    1.  Play a Swamp.
    2.  Tap for B to play Dark Ritual (BBB floating).
    3.  Use BB to play Nether Shadow (1/1, unaffected by summoning sickness) (B still floating).
    4.  Use other B to play another Dark Ritual (BBB now floating).
    5.  Use B to play the third Dark Ritual (BBBBB now floating).
    6.  Use remaining mana to play Hatred (3BB cost, pay X life:  target creature gets +X/+0 until end of turn).
    7.  Pay 19 life (leaving you at 1).
    8.  Attack with Nether Shadow.
    9.  ???
    10.  PROFIT! image

    -------

In my original big collection (12,000-14,000 cards), I had quite a bit of the old chase stuff...never any Power 9 (or even any cards that sold for $100 at the time), but I did have most of the dual lands (including playsets of Plateau, Badlands, and Tundra).  Sold them for like $20-$25 each.  Similar story for Force of Will, Mox Diamond, and many others image .  The rest I sold cheap because it was taking up valuable space ($200 for the remaining cards after I sold the really rare stuff).  Now that I'm paring down my NES collection, I have the space again, and I'm back up to around 12,000 cards, but with nowhere near the quality of the collection I had before (although I do have some nice modern stuff, it just doesn't do it for me like the old stuff does image ).

    -------

Edit:  And Seth, perhaps a nice PayPal deposit in exchange for the remainder of your cards might make you stop crying image ?
  • haha, i like my old cards! what i still have was my favorite deck... i loved making people draw cards and countering all their crap! millstones, jesters caps, sol rings, tolarian academies, counters ahhhh fun stuff! but when i go home next time, i am going to move about 200 nes cibs blocking my closet and find my little box of magic stuff! image that should be fun!!!

and dan, with the time vault, the way that i always read that card was that "to untap it, you MUST skip a turn" meaning that you cant untap it in any other manner, including the voltaic key.

i remember the survival of the fittest deck that could win on the first turn and a few more like that from around that era.

when i was really into it in high school, i made it my goal to put together weissman's "the deck" and by the time i did it, everyone stopped playing magic, so (and i hate to admit this) i played against myself... come on, you mtg losers, you know you have played against yourself on many occassions too! image haha

  • for any of you who had ANY beta cards, do you remember their condition? i remember all of mine, and none of them were too nice, thats for sure... this blows my mind... http://cgi.ebay.com/Magic-MTG-Beta-Black-Lotus-BGS-10-Highest-Graded-/220399381310?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3350d3ab3e damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!
  • I loved the game. I played from Beta - Ice Age. I also randomly pick up packs and singles over the years. I quit playing becase all they did was introduce more and more rules so they could print cards with them. Also, I hated that they said I couldn't pay with certain cards. Just pissed me off. I hope they reprint the power 9 and the price tanks. Yes i do own some power 9.
  • For over ten years Time Vault was "errataed" so that you could not twiddle it, it used "charge counters" and soforth on a virtual rules overlay.

Recently WOTC has tried to simplify the game by reducing terms back to their original printed text ("cast," for instance, is now and once again the proper term for playing a card from hand by paying its cost).

Part of that is letting Time Vault, play like it says. It now works as it reads, and overnight saw a sixfold jump in its price image
  • sorry guys. i tried to read this thread, but it got way too nerdy for me image. congrats on the finds.
  • wow, cool combos.     With so many cards out there now I guess one can really get into some neat tricks.
  • this darn thread made me look at three different stores for boosters hehe. Luckily they did not sell them.
  • i was home last night for a dentist appt (gotta go back tomorrow for a root canal) but i looked through my stuff. all i have is 1 little box left but i got a lot of cool stuff in there. some crap from the older stuff like beta, legends, the dark, etc, and then newer rares too (well newer meaning stronghold / odyssey). i didnt have force of wills which pissed me off but i did find 2 mox diamonds! and i have around 30 lotus petals left! image and about 30 carnophages and 30 cackling fiends... i think those were the names!

i also found some slivers. i used to love the sliver queen. such a fun deck to play. i miss my slivers. i found a jack in the mox and a jesters sombrero too! and some unglued mana too. ahhhhhhhh, good memories!
  • We should get some NA online magic games going. Theres an updated patch for the old windows magic game with ne cards and an add on for online play. I would post the link here for the torrent but I dont know if thats frowned upon or not. Ive been wanting to try it out but I dont know anyone who plays magic. Ive been building some neats decks though. Its awesome when you can make a deck of any card you want without having to buy it image

Finally get to use P9 cards! lol
  • Wow! Check out this sealed beta booster pack. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

Wow, that's crazy.  Is that a normal price for sealed booster packs?

I grew up in a pretty strict christian household, and whenever my mom found evil things in my brother's or my room, she would demolish them and throw them in the trash.  I lost a lot of comic books that way, but my brother lost box after box of MTG cards to the dumpster, thousands of cards gone.  I wonder how much they would be worth now? image

It's very hard to define a norm for a Beta starter deck.  Those come up for sale about as often as Korean SNES games (i.e. almost never), and I'm honestly not surprised to see that one going for $1300+ with 20 hours to go.  Sealed booster packs (15-card packs) of Beta (and Alpha, for that matter) are around $400-$500 or so, so it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for a 60-card starter deck.
  • matt, if sealed starter decks come up as often as korean snes games, what comes up as much as a sealed beta booster box? a factory sealed SE??? this is nuts!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/Beta-Booster-Box-MTG-sealed-MTG-Magic-Gathering-/290432477020?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439f1fe75c

also just a better bet as from what I remember the early packs had opaque plastic, someone shifty could see what the rare is without opening, I believe
