  • which obviously you couldn't do with a starter deck
  • Wow this thread brings back memories. I used to play MTG from approximately 1995-1997. Had a few moxes, a lotus, etc. Recently, I had an itch to drop a grand (or more) on a sealed beta starter and open that sucker up! No, I haven't actually done it, but man that would be a rush.

I'd try this myself, but my luck would probably run out before it came in the mail, and I'd end up with something crappy like Thoughtlace, Chaoslace, and some other terrible rare image .

    this is nuts!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/Beta-Booster-Box-MTG-sealed-MTG-Mag...

I believe that seller has had that for a while now...I remember seeing it listed on their own online store website for a tiny bit cheaper ($15,999).  And for all intents and purposes, that (or a Beta starter box, either/or) is MTG's approximate equivalent of a sealed Stadium Events.  A booster box or starter box of Alpha would be the equivalent of a sealed Air Raid.

Wow, that's crazy.  Is that a normal price for sealed booster packs?

It's very hard to define a norm for a Beta starter deck.  Those come up for sale about as often as Korean SNES games (i.e. almost never), and I'm honestly not surprised to see that one going for $1300+ with 20 hours to go.  Sealed booster packs (15-card packs) of Beta (and Alpha, for that matter) are around $400-$500 or so, so it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for a 60-card starter deck.

also just a better bet as from what I remember the early packs had opaque plastic, someone shifty could see what the rare is without opening, I believe

Also, right through 6th Edition, the starter decks were entirely random.  You could conceivably pull one or possibly more of the Power 9 from a Beta starter deck.  It wasn't until after 6th Ed (not sure exactly what set) that they eliminated random 60 card decks in favor of pre-built theme decks.  Too bad, I pulled a Birds of Paradise and a Vampiric Tutor out of the one starter box I picked up (6th Ed box, that was when I first got into M:TG).  Those two cards were worth more than the box cost image

that would be fun.   my itch lately has been to buy a sealed collectors edition set.   under a grand and get to enjoy all the great cards, just with square corners

True dat.  The set does has some nice artwork.

In the meantime, I've searched youtube.  There are a few videos there of people opening alpha and beta boosters, and some of them make some very nice scores!  In a couple of the videos, I saw a Beta Mox Pearl and an Alpha Mox Ruby being pulled.
