Your Favorite Underrated NES games

  • I saw The Punisher as a suggestion, much credit is very due. It's nice you can use the pad and it works very well but odd no zapper was included. Perhaps it was due to the year it came out I dunno. I remember those SMB3 basic sets had no gun, maybe an influence.

I agree. This game is awesome once you get into it

I was strangely obsessed with this game as a kid. The team dynamic was really something I could relate to, as it reminded me of all the cliques running around my school at the time. image
  • Clash at Demonhead is an interesting experiment that turns out to be fun and innovative.

I think the reasoning was that a) it would remove much of the game's challenge, and b) how can you toss grenades with only one trigger? image

It's an awesome game in it's own right and Conquest of the Crystal Palace is another game I would throw in there since it never got the attention it deserved. Faxanadu and Battle of Olympus are two more games that are totally awesome and you never hear about them all that much.
  • Wall Street Kid is a weird game on the surface, but up close and personal, it becomes a game that really gets you thinking about possible outcomes.
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Mindscape) can be a repetitive game, but it is one I always enjoyed and thought deserved a bit more appreciation than it has gotten.

That was not my intention, I just thought of the movie the Wizard and the 777 is actually for the lucky number 7. My name was originally the Wizard, but I thought that would be too generic. I was thinking about changing this since I saw that it is clost to your name, but I have to wait another month to do so.

Kid Niki: Radical Ninja - Just play it. Seriously, it's just straight up mindless fun!

Definitely. Kid Niki was one of my favorite games growing up.

Here are a few others that I think are underrated. I played the shit out of these when I was younger:

    Narc
    Little Nemo
    Festers Quest
    Faxanadu
    Golgo 13
    Wall Street Kid
    Vegas Dream
  • Jackal and The Little Mermaid. Haha, what a combination.
  • I've got a few.

Simons Quest - everyone I ever talked to hated it. "you mean the one where you have to look for stuff?". I like it.

Mappy Land - I love mappy and Mappy land obviously being a sequel was a pretty damned good time with awesome catchy music.

Robocop - not sure how this one sold but I kinda liked it. Sure there were some annoyances like the energy meter but it was cool to kill ED-209.

Jaws - I know its a classic LJN movie game cash-in but overall I didn't mind it too much. I think I beat Jaws once but those LJN endings kinda kill me. I worked my tail off on Friday the 13th and it was a text ending lol.

Freedom Force - I loved this zapper game way better than duckhunt. You could shoot terrorists!

Definitely!  Simon's Quest was a good game, once you get past a few of the flaws.. I loved it.  Jaws was okay too.  I don't really enjoy it now, but I have fond memories of it as a kid.  Freedom Force is a good one as well, but in my opinion Gotcha is better image.. I'd say they're both underrated.
  • Some of my favorites that I rarely hear people talk about are:

    Gyruss

    Journey to Silius

    Legacy of the Wizard

    Metal Storm

    Power Blade

    Totally Rad

    Xexyz

and I really like the Simpsons games even though they usually get a bad rap.

  • Oh yes..and Goonies 2. Not sure if it was ever popular but I liked the FP rooms and the the size of the map.

Bah, don't worry about it.  I was totally just fucking with you.  Just remember when people start going on about Wiz's Mom, it's not you image
  • Operation Wolf I could have sworn used the grenade just like in the arcade by having a pad jacked in and you just hit the button.  Perhaps I'm wrong and it was arcade only and they just left it out but I'm positive the original game had it and think the NES does too.
  • I think it does, but it's not very intuitive.
  • I like The Immortal. Very fun puzzle game with great music and smooth animation. Fits the dungeon theme really good. I'm really impressed with it! image

I like The Immortal as well. Not a great game, but it has some nice things going for it. I can't help but think it would have garnered more of a following if it weren't so damn hard, though!
  • Perhaps it's not intuitive having to use a toe or hold it in your left/right (non gun) hand but it would be a nice optional thing.
  • For me, Eliminator Boat Duel stands out. Pretty fun concept.

Oh goodness yeah.  I feel ashamed I didn't mention that as it's one of my all time favorites, but then again, it was pretty popular amongst my street of friends as a kid.

Looks to be fun, even though the Irategamer says it is a "shitload of shit"

I also like "Gremlins 2" a lot. It is almost never talked about. The music makes me so happy image
  • By no means any of my all time favorites, here's a few worth mentioning...

Goonies ii - Although the plot doesn't have much to do with the movie, it's an awesome game and really good adventure platformer (8 bit Cyndi Lauper music is hilarious). Only problem is a couple of important secrets might be way too obscure to figure out with assistance (à la Simon's Quest)

Friday the 13th - LJN's best movie game port (though that might not be saying much). It generally stays faithful to a Camp Crystal Lake feeling/locale and it's pretty fun once you figure out what you have to do.

Might and Magic: Secret of the Inner Sanctum - Partially another generic highly difficult and boring dungeon crawler, it's vastly superior to the PC version with improved graphics, music and it has a really bizarre plot and resolution. It's probably too dated, dense, time consuming and difficult so it will probably alienate most people, but I think it was the best dungeon crawler on the NES.

Skate or Die 2 - I love this game. The adventure portion feels like an 80s movie plot. It has really classic style gameplay turned into a skateboarding adventure. The half pipe is pretty fun too once you get the hang of it.

  • I'll agree with the above on Goonies 2. Awesome game for damn certain, but it suffers from impossibletofind-itis on some stuff w/out using a guide or the in game hammer on every square inch of the screen in every indoor area.

GOONIES ii SPOILER BELOW, DONT READ!

You remember the wall that you have to punch 5-7 times in a row? Who would figure that out? I was too young to even remember how I knew that at the time, but I sure didn't figure it out by myself.

It's not about the movie. It's Goonies 2, the sequel to the movie!  image

And as for punching the wall that many times, I don't remember that part exactly, but after what seemed like a year of our youth playing this game, we finally beat it.   (maybe it was just another one of those gems of a secret that made you have to go out and buy Nintendo Power)
  • Yeah I recall that pound the mound type crap as it's insane. Thank Nintendo for it's NP mag with the Classified Information section and the Power Player one too or crap like that would be not possible. I just restarted casually CV2 a few days ago because I found a used NES Atlas for $3 in an unlikely used book shop and it maps the bad stuff and the rest out in there.
  • The Guardian Legend

    Dragon Spirit

    Faxanadu

Those are my top three "I've never heard of that one!" games.
