Not surprised this is similar to Fusion since they said it was going to be set in the timeline between Super Metroid and Fusion. I loved the opening scene being a full 3d animated video of the ending to Super Metroid. That was a nice touch. So far, I'm digging this alot. The gameplay is very smooth aside from the occasional first person scanning bullshit.
Honestly the only thing so far I purely hate is the semi-broken stuck in 1st person mode scanning bullshit. I've sat on 3 of them so far in the game for like 10-15 min rolling everywhere over stuff to eventually lose my temper
Yes, I hate that also! I thought my game glitched, and thought I was stuck that way the first time it did it. I also hate how you have to change into that view to kill some enemies. The buttons don't seem to be mapped very well. I am always hitting the wrong ones when I switch between views B trigger should always be shoot, not "hold to scan". So lame
That's because we're in the golden age of video game coddling where every room hot saves or true saves, and if it doesn't you can quick save at the menu at any time so nothing gets too scary, hard, or would ever think of setting you back.
story is starting to pay off (heading to Sector 2), but Samus is way too emotive and every chance she gets she drops the helmet shield so we can see her face. Enough.
I am getting pissed off because my TV sucks. It is almost no fun to play. My brightness is cranked up all the way, and I still can't see anything in dark areas of the game. Most of what I see is Samus just running around in the dark, jumping and shooting randomly. This is the same for all games/movies. Stupid TV!! >_<
Ok, so I just beat it and the game is fun to play, and the core story is decent, but this is a HUGE step back for Samus' character. Throughout the entire game she is whiny and emotive and there isn't a trace of the badass bounty hunter than silently stalks her way through all of the other games in the series. If she never spoke, this game would be much better.
My only other gripe is that the game is SHORT. Maybe the shortest Metroid I have played. I beat it in 10 hours. This is a modern video game, ten hours? Prime and Prime Echoes took me every bit of 30 and I never once got bored, I was hoping for similar here, but no, the game is very short and I would wager that 20% or more is cut scenes. Thank goodness for the free-roam post game exploration mission, otherwise I would really feel cheated.
Help! HELP! I'm in level one. Climbed up the cilindricle pillar jump in the hole at the top. Fall down down down. Hit the dirt pile. Slide. Then its in 1st person, I cant move, I can't shoot. I can only look around. What am I suposed to do? I have reset 3 times! Please help! I'm getting pissed at this stupid part.
edit. Thats shit was stupid. Had to scan a bug you can barely see. I scand forever, just never saw them. Watched 5 you tube vids to catch that. Who the f designs a part of the 1st level that dumb? I thought I had a broken game with a bug. I called Nintendo. googled. All I could think was wasn't there something in the wii zelda in a dungeon ? Great. This is fn stupid.
those forced scan moments are one of the drawbacks of the game. Until you realize that you have to pixel hunt the exact spot they want and then hover there for a second, you can really get peeved. I spent every bit of 15 minutes in the environmental test area looking all around when what they wanted was for me to scan a puddle of slime (blood?) on the ground in front of the rover vehicle. Very frustrating. It should have been more sensitive to work effectively. However, these moments are few and far between and once you get used to them you start figuring out what to scan and can move on pretty quickly.
Well I finished the game within 20 hours (yet, the game time says 15ish, including Post game). Here's how I feel about Other M:
I Consider it to be as awesome as Prime 1, but I still say Super is the best. My gripe is that the Item Jingle from every other Metroid game is not in this, which makes me sad, but a lot of other stuff in the game (without spoiling the game for anyone who hasn't finished yet) makes it up. I think it's fantastic, and something worth getting a Wii for, especially if you're a hardcore Metroid fan.
Although the first person view is a cool idea, it could do a little better, by moving.
Well, I haven't finished it yet, but I have played a couple more hours. I want to say I'm in the beginning of the fire area. A few more opinions, mostly mirroring what everyone else says: the "stuck in first person scanning" parts are complete bullshit. I like figuring things out in games, but not like this. I like not being told where to go next, and having to search... But these parts are BRUTALLY bad. These parts are an exception to the "don't hold my hand" opinion for me; I feel that once the reticle gets even close to the object of interest, it should work. I also got stuck on the sunny area looking for the slime. Fucking spoiler - look at the slime.
There are thing like the scanning parts that they will undoubtedly improve upon for the inevitable sequel. However, I realized something while playing, something they can't fix for me, and a big reason why I doubt Metroid games will ever top Super Metroid for me: The classic story with Mother Brain, Tourian, Ridley, etc., just can't be beat. I don't feel they can ever make me like a final boss as much as the Mother Brain, and I don't think they could keep me interested by bringing her back. Metroid was classic, and Super Metroid was classic x10 to the perfection power. So much of what I liked about those games is just something that can't be recreated I think.
So I don't think I'll ever like a Metroid game as much as Super Metroid. Having said that, the gameplay in Other M is still far better than that of Prime, so I'm still liking it. I would still buy a sequel, even though I still think it could be better.
This was one of the best games i have played in a long time from Nintendo. So far my favorite on the Wii. I beat it 100% with 9 hours game play time and i immediately started a new file i loved it that much. After i go through it again im going to give hard mode a try.

What about pressing A and "PRAYING" to get life back! WTF!

Anyone else notice there is a save point like every third room in this game, plus checkpoints in nearly every area. What the hell?

Hang in there!
