If it's doing it automatically, then I would like to see the feature removed.
They're called emoticons, and almost any forum has them They're sensitive to certain character combination that you type in. I think if we removed emoticons, we'd start a riot.

The menu is so that you don't have to remember the text sequence to type for them to appear. They're stored as text and the parsed (and rendered) when you read the page.
