Your favorite SNES game, and why

I'm going soon to buy an North-American version of the SNES and some games with it. I also want to hear your opinion on games. I'm going to get:

Chrono Trigger - As I've heard, one of the best RPG games made (and I like RPG games).
Super Mario Bros. 3 - Played this a lot on the SNES when I were younger, one of my favorite games of all time.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - I were amazed by the first Zelda game, and this one is supposed to be one of the best as well.

Super Mario World - A lot of fun, played this for hours as well "back in the day."
Final Fantasy II & III - I like the first game a lot, so why not play the others as well?

What's your favorite game for the SNES? Tell the title, and why you like it.

  • Super Metroid is a must-have. It has some of the best gameplay ever.
  • Donkey Kong Country 1 2 and 3 all are challenging, especially if you wanna to complete them pasted 100% and have a great replay factor.
  • The lost Vikings is the best Super Nintendo game. Simple, yet challenging mix of action/platformer with puzzle. Tons of levels, great gameplay and graphics. Most of all FUN. Though it was released by Interplay, it was created by Blizzard

    Yes sir!!!!!
  • I'm a fan of the Donkey Kong Country games, one of the Kirby's (can't rember), Zelda, and Super R-Type (I think that's the side scrolling shooter that rocks - it may be gradius III though).
  • I'd also grab TMNT Turtles in Time, Secret of Mana(especially if you have 1 or 2 friends to play with that like RPG's), Contra III, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Super Punchout. Besides those mentioned. Others I'll include as honorable mentions that I found fun but might not be worth it do to overall price or lack of content due to price is the Final Fight Series, EVO Search for Eden, Aero Fighters.

Some you should get regardless because they are easy to find (cheap) and fun would be:

    Pilotwings

    F-Zero

    Star Fox
  • A couple more must have RPG's are: Super Mario RPG, Breath of Fire II (i don't think this game gets enough credit), Lufia 2, and Earthbound.
  • Final Fantasy 3 is my favorite RPG of all time.

Super Punch Out is a classic as well, especially if you like Mike Tysons.

EVO is a great and unique game too, one of my favorites for the system.
  • The Earthworm Jims have always been some of my favorite platformers.
  • KI - favorite fighting game and was pissed when they released "Gold" for the n64 instead of the original KI.

SMRPG - first game that really got me into RPG's
  • King of dragons is one of my favorite SNES games all though it can be a bit tricky to find. It's one of the better beat  em up's i have played, you can choose from multiple  characters all with their unique abilities and you level items up!
  • It would have to be Earthbound.
  • I'll second Breath of Fire II. Love the story, the characters...pretty much everything about it!

Honorable mentions: Final Fantasy III, Super Castlevania, TMNT IV, and practically every Capcom beat-em-up! image
  • Super Castlevania is my favorite. There are alot of lesser known games like Wild Guns, Sunset Riders, Maui Mallard, and Run Saber. A whole treasure trove of hidden gems out there if you look for it.
  • DEFINITELY agree with your selection of Zelda a link to the past. I got it as a kid, and still have my original cart which has been played and beaten numerous times! image

TMNT Turtles in Time is fantastic as well if you like good arcade style beat em ups!

yea this is great along with Knights of the Round
  • Get Super Turrican
  • Super Castlevania - Alot of people will say Symphony of the Night is the best Castlevania, but I'm gonna go with this one being the best. The challenge is there, the gameplay is perfect and the music rules.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: Even though this looks cutesy it's actually a really challenging platformer. Especially if you try to max it out at 100%. The levels are fairly long too. I've beaten it a few times and I still want to go back through and play it.

Super Metroid - It's really as good as everyone says it is. It's perfect in every way (even though getting the wall jump down is a pain in the ass)

All 3 of the Donkey Kong Countries are similar to Yoshi's Island in that they are challenging platformers that have high replay value if you want to complete the games 100%. Plus the graphics are among the best for the system.

Demon's Crest - a highly underrated game that mixes RPG and action/platforming seemlessly. I love it.

Also pick up Actraiser, Contra 3, TMNT 4, Tetris Attack (this is unbelievably addicting), Battletoads and Double Dragon, and Super Mario RPG.

  • Super Ghouls and Ghosts - great arcade-style action/platformer. A significant upgrade from the original Ghosts and Goblins.

Shadowrun - very uniquely styled action-rpg.

Being a huge fan of the original Gargoyle's Quest, I was extremely disappointed by this game.

  • A lot of titles here that look very interesting, hope my budget can cover most of it, lol. image
Since I'm a huge fan of Castlevania, I definitively need to get my hands on Super Castlevania IV. I've looked up some videos of it, and it is just awesome. As if they did a remake of the original game, and made it even better!
I do have some games for my PAL SNES that I've kept over the years. Some are lost after some friends have borrowed them, one of them being Super Mario Bros. 3... The games I still have are:

    Lethal Weapon

    Street Figher II: Turbo

    Tetris Attack

    Donkey Kong Country 2

    Super Mario Kart

    Pocky & Rocky 2

    Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

    NHLPA Hockey '93
  • SUPER METROID! Zelda Link to the Past is a close second.

I'll also mimic the DKC series as being great SNES games. Mario World and Mario All-Stars are obvious choice, but the often overlooked Yoshi's Island is a fantastic game.
  • Super Mario World, Wario's Woods, and Earthworm Jim, the first for nostalgia and replay value (literally hundreds of times), WW for being the best 2 player game ever (if you're playing against someone good and you're good), and Earthworm Jim for it's craziness, weirdness, challenge, and amazing music.
  • I played Earthworm Jim a lot on my PC back in the day. Had no idea it were for the SNES as well. I still haven't found a game like it. Not many games were you use your own head as a whip! And the end still make me laugh. image
  • Link to the Past. I like Zelda games a lot. Super Metroid is a very close 2nd place.
  • Skyblazer is a must-grab; it's definitely one of the most underrated games of the entire library.\

Metal Warriors is awesome too, but it's a little pricey. It's not as expensive as EVO or Aero Fighters though.
  • A toss up between Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. I'm only familiar with the sega version, but if the snes version of ys 3 is as good as the genesis version is you should try it out.
  • Secret of Mana because it's awesome

    E.V.O. because it's radical

Metal Warriors because it's not bogus

...and I still hold Super Mario Kart as the funnest racing game ever. I like it better than the other MKs even. SNES FTW!
