How to make paper NES cart sleeves?

I came across an interesting image of a fucnoland dust cover from nesplayer.com:
http://www.nesplayer.com/funco.png

It's mentioned in this article thingy:
http://www.nesplayer.com/collectors/index.htm

In the article it gives a link to another page that gives you instructions on how to print it out and cut and fold it.  Unfortunately the images are broken on the page:
http://www.nesplayer.com/nesforever/howto.html

I tried emailing the guy that runs the site to see if he could fix the images, but he never replied back.  I noticed the info in the article that mentions it is pretty outdated so there is probably no hope hearing back on it.  I wanted to touch that image up and then make some of them for my loose carts that don't have dust sleeves.  I thought they might look kind of cool, kind old school image

Does anyone have any idea how to fold a sheet of paper into a dust sleeve or know of somewhere else on the interwebs that might have similar instructions?  Or even better, does anyone know the guy that runs nesplayer.com?

  • Back when I was a kid we had to make dust sleeves out of a burlap sack.
  • If you have a crummy (or maybe not a crummy) dust sleeve lying around rip it apart (or maybe look at it) and make it flat, trace around it, scan it, etc, you have a dust sleeve template

Lol, I'm willing to bet we're pretty close to the same age image.  I was surprised to see how many members were in there early twentys and even some teenagers here though.  Didn't know whipper snappers were into retrogaming.

I didn't even think about that.  I could sacrifice one of my plain black ones image

    Thanks man!

  • Yeah i'm an old dude. 39. If your gonna try herbs idea make sure to leave extra paper tabs on the folds that you can glue together.
  • I have an old Funcoland sleeve that we can take apart, trace and scan...
Here is a start...see if they work for now..I will try and clean them up in a program later...
Had to do it in 2 pieces since the sleeve was larger than my scanner...

    All notes are in inches.
Again, sorry the dimensions might be hard to read...
The far left height is 3 1/16
All pink lines are dimension lines...not fold or cut lines...
    Hope it helps

Well I take back what I said, you are older than me image  I'm 29 years old.

Dude, you're my hero!  I'm going to mess around with this during the weekend.  I'll take some pics and show everyone the results image

  • Cool...let me know what cardboard works the best for folding.
  • If someone could post similar flattened scan for Tengen cardboard dust sleeve, would be sweet.
  • Got really busy this weekend and didn't have a lot of time to work on this.  I managed to put together a rough draft one to verify that I had made a good working template.  This one was made with regular old printer paper and has no artwork on it.  It's the right size and everything and actually holds a cart pretty well.  It's basically a proof of concept for me.  I'm going to make some cool custom ones out thicker card stock with some bitchin artwork.  I'll do some funcoland ones for sure too.  I think I may even make a Nintendo Age one for fun image  I'll show you guys what I come up with.

Here are some links to a pictures of the rough draft one:

  • Played a around a little more with my template and made a rough draft of a custom sleeve for Castlevania.  This one was printed on matte photo paper.  I need to figure out a better way to cut these so the edges aren't so rough.  Folding them is kind of a pain in the ass too.  Need to figure out something with that too so these look better.  I'm thinking about doing a bunch of custom ones for my favorite games image

    Anyways, here's pics:

Thanks! I'm going to do a Funcoland one next.  Need to get new ink cartridges first though.
  • Looks wonderful! Now I'm considering making a few image
  • Pretty cool buddy.

One suggestion: you might want the game title on the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) of the sleeve. When I stack my games on shelves, 95% of what you see is just the top of the sleeve and the front of the cart. Just an idea. Looks like you have a fairly neat concept already though.
  • Hi guys, here's a nice template to use, click for full size.

  • Dude, those look great! You better be ready for a flood of requests...I am already thinking about sending you a PM.

  • I'm still working on them, going to try a new one tonight to see if I can the process down really well. I want them to look as slick as possible image I'm probably going to start making them for some of the cooler games that I sell on eBay. I'm open to doing request though image
  • I remember making a heap of these for my NES games about 15 years ago. I used standard black cardboard (not sure on exact grade or anything) I still have them to this day and they are great. I also made some custom ones with pictures on them as well.
  • Here are some pictures of one I did for the Super Mario Bros./Duck hunt cart I did last night:

    Side 1

    Side 2

    Spine

I'm not a really pleased with the way the spine came out.  Need to work on that text to make it look better.  Also, because standard printer size paper is slightly to small you'll notice the top of the sleeve doesn't actually go all the way to the top of the cart.  It still works though :-)  I've been using matte photo paper for these, which seems durable and sturdy enough to work.  If I could find matte photo paper in legal size then I could actually make these things full size :-)

  • wow, those are pretty slick, looks like a long term project. How'd the bottom of it turn out?

The bottom on this one came out perfect.  It has a logo that I'm playing around with for my side business printed on the bottom.  I'll take a picture of the bottom a little later and add it :-)

FYI, the image labeled "spine" in my previous post had the wrong image linked to it.  I just fixed it.  I don't like the way the text showed up on the spine.  I'm not liking the font or the color now.  I'm probably going to "draw" the text myself to make it look more 8-bit instead of trying to use a font.

  • it doesn't look too bad, just very bunched together.
  • Does anyone still have a template for this? all the links on this page are dead and I was planning on making some of these today...
  • Wow, because of the bump, I thought elhector needed to know how to make the sleeves. I thought "doesn't he already know?" lol

@ ZeppelinDude93, try to get a hold and PM elhector or anyone posted templates previously on this post. If you can't get a hold of them, shoot me a PM and I'll dig through my hard drive and find some that I made for ya.

I suggest anyone else who is interested to do the same since zombie threads can be a bit confusing. Mods, please lock this if you want to avoid any more necrobumps.
  • I have scrolled through my hard drive and all of my thumb drives and can not find the scans with the dimensions listed. I still have 2 other computers to scroll through, but I am sure elhector has them saved somewhere...He makes nice stuff...

  • If no one can find the dimensions I'll make a template up. after reading this the other day I went ahead and ripped one of my dust sleeves apart out of curiosity. So I'll make one if no one can find it.
  • If anyone wants my old template, I found it. It's not perfect, and it needs improvement like more separate layers and such, but anyone's free to use:
