I thought it was pretty cool to see Battle Kid in here:

If this is posted elsewhere feel free to lock this up, but I checked around and couldn't find it.

Hahaha, I noticed that too, but everyone can't beat the hardest games.

  • I'm a little disappointed to see that Battletoads was #1. I think it is a very hard game, but not the hardest.

When you ignore all of the games that are "hard for the wrong reasons" (i.e. bad control, bad design, etc) then Battletoads is definitely up there.
  • my buddy and I beat it after it came out with no cheats in 2 player mode. We could only do it once, and tried many more times to repeat it again.
  • It's nice to see BK getting some respect and publicity, hopefully a few more sales at retrozone will be made
  • I disagree with Ninja Gaiden being on the list, Ninja Gaiden 3 is ten times harder than the first. Silver Surfer is frustrating but there are much harder games out there, the main issue I have with the game is my thumbs getting really sore after being the first few levels which leads to me making stupid mistakes. Battle kid should be number one I think, it's easily one of the hardest games I've played recently. The sequel needs a life bar for the love of Christ.
  • Yeah kids hands or adult hands Silver Surfer will wear your ass out long before it's over and you pray you have a turbo button or you won't be able to handle all the buckshot coming in your face along with the enemies.

I have the same problem with Commando, my left thumb was in serious pain and I had to stop like three times with my nes paused just to see that shitty CONGRADULATION ending.

  • I think screwattack's list of the 10 hardest NES games is a good one, but there will probably never be a general consensus on which is THE hardest game on the NES. It's going to be different for everyone. For some it will be Battletoads, others one of the Ninja Gaiden games, for some Ghosts n' Goblins, others it will be TMNT.

Silver Surfer is definitely a hard game, but once you start memorizing where all the enemies are located and their movement patterns, it's not too difficult.

    Agreed with ya on that.
  • Perhaps there should be a separate category of "hardest games until you memorize enemy locations and movement patterns", vs. games that are just hard no matter how much you memorize.
  • I don't think Battletoads should be number 1 either, but it is a hard game. Maybe we should make a new thread for the hardest "good NES game?

    AP is right on point!
  • Ghosts N Goblins kicks my balls in every time. I dont see BT being number 1 either.
  • Hey, they've mentioned the RetroUSB NWC repros in their NWC Video game vault. I'm sure they know quite a bit.
  • Pretty good list. I've beaten five of their top 10. For me, Ghosts 'N Goblins is the hardest, kicks my butt every time (this is coming from someone who's beaten Ghouls 'N Ghosts and Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts as well). Perhaps Castlevania is the one that many will feel should be on this list! They showed Blaster Master and Batman in the intro but they didn't make it...for me those are way harder than Super C.
  • Super C is easy. Contra on the other hand is more difficult imo. I can nearly no-death run Super C but I can't beat Contra without the Konami code.
  • Cool list. Agreed on ninja gaiden 3 is 10x harder then the 1st or 2nd. Super C definately not list worthy. Blaster Master is alot harder especially without pause damage glitch.

The top 3 destroy me, but i havent put much effort into learning them. Top 10 hardest "playable" games would be cool to see peoples opinions. No LJN games and such lol, Ive beaten the bottom 4 games on this list. havent played festers/bayou billy but they look stupid hard and not even worth playing anyways
  • I've beaten 7/10 of the games on their list.

Battle Kid I haven't really given a run yet, Silver Surfer I've never even played and years ago I gave Bayou Billy a run and ended up so mad at the driving sections that I wanted to vomit.
